Pretty meaningless stat considering the competition. Two dying consoles (PS3,X360) and two already dead consoles (Vita, WiiU). Not going to happen this year as it finally will have real competition.

Wonder how PS4/XBone software compare to Wii U, Wii, 3DS and Vita for 2013. I'm sure they were able to surpass at least one of those for the year, maybe even 2.

Never mind Vita outselling the 360, Vita was actually outselling Xbone as recently as December in Spain.

Edit: the only thing I would say referring to the launch drought is, unless I'm mistaken there isn't anything confirmed post march date wise? But I've probably missed an announcement somewhere. Expect Watch_Dogs to hit May or June as Ubi revised their fiscal year projections, and #driveclub to hit April time.

Like every post launch system ever, even your precious Wii U. People are ready for next gen, they aren't some brain washed lemmings buying new hardware just coz. It helps when the hardware is appealing to a large group of people that spend their disposable income on video games.

I disagree. While there's nothing wrong with paying a premium to join the launch party simply for the thrill of it, and I've done so myself with several systems, the idea that all consoles feature shit launch games and/or post-launch droughts is simply not true and is generally a poor defence of modern launches.

I don't think people went in particularly blind. There were three Playstation consoles before this one and all of them were pretty fucking good. You know what you're getting, even if it isn't all served immediately.

I don't think your theory on sales is true either, otherwise launch window games would never bomb and I'd be getting a sequel to Zombi U.

Hardware and software are way more complicated now than ever. Getting a game out at launch had never been more complex. Most people understand that and they don't expect these systems to drop in price as quickly as the Wii U and 3DS did they felt alright about jumping in at launch. The only deterrent is potentially faulty hardware, which is why I have neither. That and waiting for my tax returns cheque.

Plus never underestimate the allure of playing better versions of multipolar games, that stuff sells gamers on next gen. There is this misconception that only exclusive libraries count, and that's total crap.

Hardware units 1.25 million.

PS4 hardware in full year 2013 greater than total Xbox 360 hardware in full year, by a couple of thousand units. Perhaps that's threadworthy?

3DS hardware still greater than PS4, however, so PS4 not top-selling system -- 3DS was top.
