Yooka-Laylee |OT| Reptile Rolling in the 90’s

The pages that require you do any sort of physics based puzzle are terrible. Perhaps only beaten by Kartos missions.

Nearing the number I need to get to the boss. Think I'm done after that. The sad truth is that there's a lot more average-mediocre pages than there are fun ones.

It's been a week and GOG version is still not patched.

Is this normal? Do GOG versions of games get shafted like this regularly?

It was, but as of earlier in the year, developers can now update games instantaneously a la Steam, although only via Galaxy (the patch still needs to be submitted to CDPR for the offline installer to be updated, so there remains a delay in that process). Team17 said "a couple of days" a week ago now, but at least two people have reported a strange conflict with the game and Galaxy that results in invulnerable enemies, which may be the reason for the delay.

On top of this some of the game design decisions are equally baffling. To get to the top of the central parthenon like structure in that first world I had to navigate the exterior of the model in a way that felt like I was exploiting terrible model and bounding-box designs. I understand making a game not hand-holdy, but that's ridiculous. There were other situations of the same sort of thing. Where it felt like to get where I needed to go I had to traverse areas that appeared to not be viable.
You're supposed to get the final upgrade to get up there. There are a lot of places you're supposed to come back to after getting powers that are technically possible with goofy jumping.

Still playing through this and... levels are too big for their own good. Makes me realize that sometimes linear games are best (Crash or even Knack). The Playtonic intro is sooo bad (and it can't be freaking skipped), those loading screens are awful looking and take forever... also why are the fonts sooo freaking huge?

Still patiently waiting to get this game on the Switch. This and Rime...

Hope they come sooner rather than later, I really want to play.

2nd week of July now, where's the console version of the newest patch? It's been out on PC for a few weeks now....

My guess is that due to Playtonic's inexperience with console title update processes, they must be going through quite a bit of certification hell. Wouldn't be surprised one bit to hear that they faced a few rejections that are making the patch longer to come than what they originally expected.

What's with these bigger indie games being released after the other versions or being delayed?

I understand Yooka-Laylee and maybe RiME situation, but even Poi--originally a Steam only game--got both announced and released last month on PS4 and Xbone while Switch was "later this year".

I hope future big [3D] indie titles aren't like this for Switch.

I'm afraid my interest in the game might flare out by the time the patch finally comes out on console. I was chipping away at completing the game until the patch was announced and now I'm afraid to pick it back up until the patch is installed. Figured it was only going to be a few days wait...

Considering that for PS4 and Xbox 1 Team17 handles it (I believe they still do?) it probably has to do more with that and porting whatever was updated

I'm in the Casino map and I think I had enough of this game. The map is so boring to play.

The level afterwards is slightly better, but the levels definitely get worse as you go throughout the game.

Finished the game last week. Eh. It was fun to play a collectathon platformer in the same vein as Banjo, but the game doesn't quite hit the highs that those games ever did. Many of the levels just feel empty and boring, and by the end of the game I was just tired of mediocre missions that were obtuse or purposefully frustrating.

Got the game today and so far I'm really enjoying it. I did notice something odd though. A circular spotlight effect on the ground around the characters. Like as I'm walking I can see the immediate area around yooka is brighter than a few feet ahead. It's circular in shape almost as if there's a weak spotlight around the characters.

Beat the game today having collected everything up to the Cashino. Got the bug that eats a Pagie on that world so I'm waiting for the patch to hopefully clear it up before getting 100%.

Just wanted to ask, will I like this game if I've never played Banjo Kazooie, Tooie?

I have played and beaten Donkey Kong 64.

Just wanted to know before I get this on Switch, if it ever releases, anyway.

You might have a harder time looking passed its flaws if you don't have the Banjo nostalgia glasses

Game doesn't hold a candle to Banjo so I'd argue the opposite.

I can see that and I agree it's nowhere near as good as Banjo. But while I was disappointed in Yooka Laylee, I feel its parallels and callbacks to Banjo made me enjoy parts of it more than I otherwise would have thanks to nostalgia.

How will this manage to run on the Switch?, performance isn't that good on PS4... don't want to imagine how it will run on Switch.

I noticed this too, not sure what causes it.

Finally started digging into this game a few days ago, currently in the middle of the third world. Gotta say the levels seem a bit aimless and unorganized. I felt like in Banjo I could methodically work my way through a level but here I'm just tripping over side paths and areas that just kind of blur together on my way to more sectioned off objectives. Even in Tooie which had more backtracking and juggling missions between worlds [compared to Kazooie] I felt like I knew when I had done everything I could do at that time. Here, aside from the obvious security cameras, I'm not really sure if I have actually done all that I could. Sometimes it feels like I should have something to do next but I don't know what it is.

The world expansion mechanic sounded interesting on paper, but it was so obvious and jarring how the level would just stop in the first world that I ended up expanding the next two worlds before I even entered.

Then there's a lot of little things I just generally like less. Timed fruit powers vs. eggs w/ ammo, the energy bar seems largely pointless, somehow panning the camera looks bad, the Rextro stuff, the entire bubble power is just baffling to me, some of the footstep sound effects are just annoying, controlling your depth underwater doesn't feel great which is weird considering other games use the same exact method just fine, etc.

And this is all after having to add a line of text into the game's launch options just so it would play through the first cutscene without locking up.

Sure, I like the game, it's fine but underwhelming. Not sure I'll 100% it, which I something I play these kinds of games for. The writing still gets some chuckles out of me.

This mechanic is so weird to me, because I feel its intention is to play in a smaller version of the map to better internalize it instead of being given a massive play space all at once but the game is inconsistent with what the expansions add that this doesnt really shake out. The only time it feels like its used well is in World 3.

Id say Id want them to continue exploring this mechanic in a sequel, but maybe its something they thought was cool on paper, couldnt make work, and then felt hamstrung by promising because World 5 is so hilariously empty without expanding (i think you can only get like 4 pagies?) that theres zero reason to pop in its smaller state.

I see GOG have the patch now. Is this game worth £26? Is it as big/varied as banjo kazooie?

It was worth full price IMO. It's not as varied as Banjo since there aren't as many worlds, but the worlds in Yooka are way larger so it ends up being as big.

Pretty much my thoughts on that mechanic. I think the sweet spot for expansions is to make sure the unexpanded world doesn't feel limited or unfinished. The Icymetric Palace was the best expansion to me because Glitterglaze Glacier was self-contained and fully fleshed out even without it.

A GS employee told me they believe Switch version will be pushed into early next year.

I know, they usually aren't always a reliable source, but take it for what it's worth.

What promotional material we've seen so far has always claimed "2017" - though it's a while since we saw anything, so I suppose that that could have changed.

Was it followed by, "Would you like to preorder Super Mario Odyssey or Xenoblade 2?" ;)

Seriously though, I really hope it comes out this year. I backed it on KS with hopes of getting it for Wii U, and later changed my platform to Switch.

I bought this for PS4 during GameStop's sale a while back, and waiting to really play it until the patch is out. I'm not mad or anything but the wait is painful.

Looks like the XB1 and PS4 versions are Best Buy's DOTD, $20 for everyone, $16 for GCU members. Very tempting...

I'm a KS backer still waiting for the Switch release. That makes it extra tempting.

I bought this for $10 during Prime Day -- worth playing now or should I wait for the patch? I have other stuff I could dig into in the meanwhile...

I wonder how many team members are working on the patch and the port, and how many are working on twooka-laylee.

Serious question because it could be everyone working on the former.

Definitely worth playing - or at least trying - now. It's not perfect, but as I mentioned above, still very playable.

If you find that you're not enjoying it once you've tried it, you can always set it down and wait for the patch at that point.

No Switch version yet, or even an update on it at this point is quite disappointing.....this game has already been out for everything else for months!!!!!!!!

Yeah, one cell phone camera photo of the game "running" on Switch was honestly kind of a copout. We know it's in-development, but would some direct-feed footage have killed them?

I can't believe the Spit and Polish update isn't on PS4 yet. I bought this on Prime Day but I'm not going to play it until that patch is in.
