Super Smash Bros Direct on 9/4 12AM (EU), 7AM (JP) - 8/4 6PM (EST), 3PM (PST)

I suspect the Direct will be focused primarily on game features - modes, changes to structure, that customization thing for the 3DS version, things like that. We haven't heard really anything about that, so a Direct would be a perfect time to make the skeptics have a reason to buy the new Smash outside of just new characters.

It'll definitely have at least one newcomer, and I'd be surprised if we didn't also get a few veterans announced. Yoshi, Wario or even Snake would be good guesses. Newcomers-wise, I think they might decide to open with a newcomer and close with a newcomer to keep hype up - good openers would be characters like Mii or Palutena, who are exciting but not incredibly hyped, and closers should be either a new third party character (Pac-Man, Bayonetta?), a highly-hyped and demanded Nintendo character (Ridley, Mewtwo) or something that's a bit out of left field and would be unexpected to most (Wonder Red, Takamaru, someone no one will see coming...).

I'm definitely with those that think we'll see a release date, too, though I still think it'll be Holiday 2014. They might give a month instead of a specific date - maybe November 2014?

Either way, I'm sure the Direct will be a blast.

November 2014 sounds realistic to me.

Doesn't read OPs, especially not his own
well i mean just how much can they talk about 3 games? Pokemon had 5 gens to cover in their direct. so obviously much more to talk about in comparison to the smash series

You underestimate just how much stuff you can talk about in terms of smash, a incredible amount

Yea like music, final smashes, stages (stage builder), what the team did to balance the game, will single player be like melee, new items, how new characters work, new fighting mechanics, online stability, spectate mode, a new game mode, release date, downloadable demo... and maybe more... there is a lot they can cover.

A Smash Direct? What in the what? And so soon after they lifted a Mario Kart embargo? Normally Nintendo is myopically focused on the next big title.

I don't understand the strategy here, but I think I like it.
If they've got lots to discuss at E3, it makes sense to get it out of the way so there's more time for other discussions.

Direct starts with Sakurai welcoming us to an explosive direct. "Before we begin, I'd like to throw in some news, Iwata has stepped down. On to the show!" - Does that directly pose

WHat is bugging me besides the lack of a Mario Kart Direct is that we should have got a FULL bi monthly direct this month.

So this means there is a chance for TWO directs this month ? =O

We got Wii U Direct and Pokemon Direct in Jan 2013. Also it have happened before for other games, like Wonderful 101 Direct and Bimonthly Direct.

I think they are going to announce something good for April Bimonthly so they don't want Smash to overshadow other announcements or need more time for other games.

Didn't we have a Direct last month? Or was that two months ago already....

My hype can't handle TWO directs with one being smash exclusive

This is the month for the bimonthly. So it'll be interesting to see whether or not there was any purpose to them not just placing whatever info comes out of here into that.

...So, looks like I got confused by you people and your improper method of listing dates! Wasn't looking that closely and saw the "/4" and thought it was referring to today being the 4th. Usually these things pop on us more! Well, time to shelf my hype.

At least it makes since why this thread wasn't exploding with hype 10 minutes before the Direct now. Bleh.

That's what I'm hoping for really.

Next bi-monthly Direct between the seventeenth or twentyfifth.

(I love this gif and wanted to use it again)

We'll probably get a release date, perhaps some more newcomers and something probably related to Mario Kart 8. (perhaps a stage or something)

is this confirmed or just speculation? 2 Directs in April?

It's not "confirmed," but we've gotten a bimonthly direct consistently since they started, so we should definitely get one. Unless they're weird this time and decide that a game specific direct counts as the bimonthly, but that has yet to happen.

I want them to announce a new Mario Strikers.

Why do I feel like this is going to go over things we already know and end up being disappointing?
Still expecting 2 newcomers, or a newcomer+a veteran.

Yep, I'm guessing it'll focus more on other (possibly unannounced games) if they were willing to devote an entire direct to Smash to free up time. We probably still could get a "Mario Kart 8 Direct" next month, plus the 'bimonthly' Direct either towards the end of this month or early next month. They'll have to have at least one major Direct between now and E3 to hype up what they are going to show and announce their plans for E3 (Direct/Conference/etc)

Even if it just went over information we already knew I'd probably be satisfied provided they use new gameplay footage, which they certainly will. I just want to see more extended footage of how the game actually looks and feels when it is being played.

Edit: Dumb double post, sorry.

She only dresses up to look like him. She fights more like her father.
And her father fights like Ike.

The issue with Lucina though is that there's a large story and gameplay dissonance there. The dialogue, and her one CG battle show her fighting like Chrom, but her actual gameplay animations in her main class are all based on Marth's.

It has to be modes or something. It's not like its a developer direct where he'll just go over mechanics you can look into from dailies.

Mark my words. This announcement will be about the release of a line of Near Connectivity device tie ins for the new Smash Bros. If they dont do it with this Nintendo Direct then it will be their E3 announcement. One way or another though...you know its coming. They are a toy company and they have merch that sells. Going Skylanders with a top draw title like this is pure money. Hoping its items only, but if they go in...I'm betting it eventually goes whole hog.

Yea, probably something small like that. With only 2 months to E3 I feel like they'll probably hold back on giving us much now when they could save the big reveals for then.

I don't know about eventual other Directs or Mini-Directs, but I do know that the bi-monthly schedule hasn't failed us since... well the beginning. We did have that very short Direct in May last year with some Pikmin 3, Mario & Sonic, Sonic Lost World reveal and Resident Evil Revelations. Don't know if they will repeat that this year.

I do hope we get a regular ND, because last year's April ND was pretty big in content. It offered new info regarding Mario & Luigi DTB, Mario Golf WT, Mario Party IT announcement, New Super Luigi U info, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, Yoshi's New Island announcement, Mario & Donkey MOTM, Wii U system Update, Pikmin 3, Earthbound VC announcement, Fire Emblem, Lego City Undercover 3DS, Animal Crossing NL, Zelda OoA/OoS VC, Guild02 releases on eShop, Shin Megami Tensei IV for EU (goddamnit NoE!), Layton 6 formal announcement, Bravely Default EU/US announcement and finally the Legend of Zelda ALBW announcement. It was absolutely packed.

But then again, it's Nintendo. They're unpredictable.

Here's what I'm expecting:
- we'll see a full match played out
- they'll announce either the quarter or month of launch
-announce a returning character like Yoshi despite his game not being out in Japan yet
-one or two newcomers(though I'm expecting a Namco character like Pacman to be announced at E3)
-details of new features/changes
-show off some new items

I'd be satisfied with this.

Just speculating. I think all the characters from the starting roster have been shown or will be shown in this Direct give or take Toon Link/Sonic/Mega Man/Luigi being unlockable. I think they'll show Yoshi and possibly Sheik since those two are generally the last starting veterans to be revealed. Outside of Palutena, it's just a matter of how many new characters will be shown. Pac-Man/Mii/Female Villager + Male Wii Fit Trainer/Dixie Kong/Impa/Ridley/etc.

Oh gawd, the wait is unbearable and exciting. I want them big dramatic reveals now, child!

just show chrom
or tharja :'D
and I will be happy with this direct, Lil Mac reveal was awesome, expected, but awesome, fire emblem was released in april, so it can be him

as for veterans... I want to show to a certain character my moves

I don't expect a release date confirmation unless the game is coming earlier than I expected. I figured it would be the big November holiday game. Maybe it's earlier than that? That leads to the question of, assuming Zelda is 2015, what is the big 2014 holiday game if Smash Bros is autumn/ early fall? Bayo and X definitely aren't it.

My predictions:
- Recap of Rosalina and Little Mac, perhaps featuring a final Smash
- Veteran reveal, one with an updated final smash
- At least one new gameplay mode
- Trailer for newcomer
- Gameplay demo of the newcomer
- Suprise trailer for another newcomer that ends with a release date (to the day)
- End!

I'm envisioning two scenarios:

1. The game is actually coming out soonish.

2. This is a way of pleasing the people who want both bimonthly directs and an E3 that isn't boring. Instead of announcing new things, they can just show more Smash Bros now and save everything else for June.

Or maybe it's both.

The "E3 that isn't boring" thing is something I've been thinking for a while. Nintendo blew a weird amount of their load in the Directs prior to E3. The January one was understandable because they were panicked about sales, but the one before June (I think that one was also April?) revealed so much that would have made people enjoy their E3 Direct a lot more if it had been revealed there.

Though I also wonder how much of it was them thinking they needed to have previews ready from the second the Direct airs or people might get the wrong idea. Articles from USGamer and Wired saying "Yo, this Zelda is actually great" probably tempered a lot of teeth gnashing at the way the game looked in the Direct. So maybe it was better that game wasn't at E3?

I dunno, this whole thing is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation with them and it's partially their fault.
