Have you seen Titanfall (Xbox 360)?

Yeah, developers should definitely make it an option where possible to lock framerate if the game is going to otherwise just trying to be getting as many frames out as possible

In the case of Infamous: Second Son, only after consumers requested the option. I don't think Tomb Raider: DE has the option at all. I'm glad that Titanfall does, but I'm talking about a larger, very recent trend in console gaming.

I don't understand why locking games at 30 or 60Hz was standard for two entire console generations, then suddenly in 2014 devs start deciding that variable framerates in between the two without Gsync is perfectly cool.

We've been playing variable frame rates on PC and consoles for years though. I don't want to say it's entitlement but if it's not a slideshow frame rate then I'm fine.

I played long sessions of Delta Force 1/2 at around 15-20fps and had the time of my life. Let's not act as if having a frame rate go from 30~ to 45~ is the end here. I do agree that if the option was there then great, I'd be happy. I'm just as content as it not being there as long as there's no tearing.

My Target has a whole bunch of these out on the floor, haven't sold one yet today though :p.

I saw them out too, guess there's confusion over the release date because retailers are tight asses about street dates.

would be dumb to buy one early anyways with no info and the servers presumably not working yet.

I don't even know why it's an option. Devs should have just locked that shit at 30 and been done with it.

Because they're fucking stupid and believe a stuttering frame-rate due to it jumping up and down is better than a stable 30fps. "Anything above 30fps is gravy." No, it makes your game stutter. Look at some of the PS4 games that had/have frame-rate issues due to it being unlocked and fluctuating like crazy: COD Ghosts, KZSF, Knack, Infamous SS. They all stutter... some worse than others.

I understand your point, but I would be extremely surprised if Titanfall 360 reaches 45fps.

My point is that if a game is barely going over 30fps (like say, Shadow Fall SP, Tomb Raider: DE XB1, Infamous: Second Son, and what I'm assuming will be Titanfall 360), then just lock it at 30.

It's not like these are games like Bayonetta or Call of Duty that target 60, but have drops down to like 40/50. I'm talking about games that are so close to 30 that they should just lock it at 30 and be done with it.

Variable framerates without Gsync is just bad news. If variable framerates are fine, somebody should let Nvidia know so they can stop wasting their time inventing some of the most exciting new technology to come out of the sector in a long time.

Don't disagree but until GSYNC is cheaper and a more open standard I feel like this is something that is more of an enthusiast opinion vs a common everyday user experience.

Devs have been fine with locking framerates at 30 or 60 since the turn of the century, I just don't understand why within the last six months some started deciding that saying "Fuck it, UNLOCKED!" is better.

I'll go with the time-tested and common sense idea of having the framerate locked at a proper TV/Monitor Refresh Rate interval, over whatever the fuck this variable, unlocked shit going on right now is.

I remember buying the metal tin Perfect Dark Zero Collector's Edition a few weeks before I even got my launch 360.

Boy was that disappointing when I finally played it. Jesus, I still haven't gotten over that game.

I doubt that Titanfall is going to stay north of 30 on the 360, so it's pretty much a Sophie's choice anyway. If they used triple buffering it wouldn't tear even if the game ran unlocked. There would be a locked buffer to swap and another one for the game to draw to. I prefer unlocked because there's less input lag and I think 30fps looks like butt anyway, so it's not like I'm missing an awesome, smooth experience.

A very good friend of mine has an "average PC" which cost upwards of 700$ at a store. I assure you, it is *not* capable of running Titanfall.

I've heard the game doesn't run well on PCs and you need a beefy rig to really get some high quality performance.

This isn't good advice, based on everything I've heard about its optimization for lower-to-mid range machines.

They can run it at a lower resolution and turn down textures and all the additional effects. The game is horribly coded no matter what platform you play on. Bad advice is trying to get someone to spend $500+ to play an unoptimized mess of a game.

That is patently false. The Xbox One version runs below 60 fps and exhibits tearing the vast majority of the time. That's not to say it sits at 30-35 fps all the time, but it routinely hangs under 60 fps. It's nowhere near stable.

Just out of curiosity, what are the specs of this $500 PC from a couple years back? I'm interested.

I don't get anywhere close to that kind of impression. Been playing Titanfall on my xbox one with decent regularity for well over a week now, and I would describe it as a game with quite good performance that definitely feels like it's running at a solid 60fps or extremely close to it the larger majority of my play time. It isn't even a case where I've just been having so much fun that I didn't notice, or that I haven't been looking out for it, because I certainly have been. I very rarely, if ever, find myself in situations where performance is a legitimate detriment to my ability to do exactly what I need to do when I need to do it.

Only ever really notice anything amiss in those most hectic or busiest of situations when the action gets really crazy, but even those aren't long or frequent enough to weigh too heavily against the game. Can it be better? I suppose, and the devs have said that they can improve performance further after they ship, and if they really can or will, fantastic, but I certainly wouldn't complain with it being as it is currently. Every game I've played, even the ones where I've gotten my ass kicked, have all felt really good.

I've really learned since getting my system and having some real time and experience with the game that the performance isn't anywhere nearly as catastrophic on the Xbox One as some had been making it seem. Who knows, maybe I'm not as susceptible to things like tearing as much as some of the folks here, but there hasn't been a single game where I found myself stressing about the performance, because it hasn't bothered me. And just to end off, Titans really don't seem to last long enough in the games I've been in for there to ever be so many that it causes performance issues. I suspect they're the culprits, but they get absolutely hammered in the games I've played. Calling in a Titan is like making yourself a massive bullseye because it seems like everyone, myself included, just focus exclusively on them once they appear. I enjoy fighting them. It's a constantly exciting thing to do, especially when they aren't aware of your presence, but it's still pretty damn fun when they see you also. I've had quite a few games where I could've called in my Titan 3 to 4 (maybe more) times, but I usually only end up doing it once, or not at all, because playing the pilot is so fun. Also, proud to say I'm not trying to earn my camping badge like some players I've come across. :p

Watched a bit more. Some thoughts:

  • Screen tearing seems really bad. I wonder if this is down to the recording equipment?
  • Resolution looks stellar. If it's not 720p, it's darn close.
  • Textures look decent but not great.
  • The framerate seems to chug a bit when there's a lot of players on screen. Otherwise it seems smooth.
  • Great draw distance.

The xbone version has the same problem. I'm honestly not seeing a difference here, if someone told me that was the xbone version I'd believe it.

Please avoid the hyperbole until we have better quality footage and/or direct feed screenshots. It looks good, but I'd say there's clear disparity between the different versions.

If we don't have quality footage how can you tell either way? :p

360 users should be happy they'll be getting a game that is playable and won't have to spent several hundred to play a slightly better version.

Looks pretty good to me, Bluepoint seems to have done good work although better videos are required to be sure

Screen tearing is pretty bad though

This version is so great. I cant compare it with the pc or xbox 1 version but its so fast paced and fun.

I locked mine in 30 FPS, and I love it.

Great game for 360 gamers.

I bought my 360 launch because of PDZ. I forced myself to like it. At least it was 32-players online. And had colors.

So seeing how good it looks and runs for that granny hardware (never doubt Bluepoint), one possbiblity why there was no info/screens/vids at all can be scratched: that it runs so poorly that bluepoint/MS/EA wanted to hide it.

So probably more the XB1 boost scenario *tinfoilhead* .

Sales would have been interesting if they had advertiesed it for both systems the same way and released it the same day.

Also picking apart screens of Titanfall is not the best way to compare as it looks really nice in motion with all the stuff going on.

Is it true, that you cannot install the disc?

btw. Xbox 4GB owners need to buy a harddrive nevertheless:

EA Support Page:

You cannot play your game without this installation, nor can it be installed on flash memory sticks, or internal flash memory--such as the internal memory of the Xbox 360 Slim, or 4GB model. Hard Drives are available and sold separately for the Xbox 360 Slim/4GB, Arcade, and Core consoles.
