Edge #267 scores, contents

Seems like I'm missing out on Child of Light. Is the game that good GAF ? Off to watch some reviews.

It's a pretty decent game, I think the main issue the reviewers have is that the game is a cakewalk on normal difficulty, I find hard to be just right, maybe some people will still find it easy but it was challenging enough for me, but the mechanics of the game are pretty competent and fun, the core combat is simple but they mix those elements up pretty well, enemies will use similar skills against you and I often find myself using different characters and strategies against different bosses.

I haven't finished the game yet, surely there might be things they can improve or do better, but I think it's overall worth the $15.

Mario Kart 7 and Advance got 9, DS and 64DD an 8, Wii a 6, Double Dash a 5. Not sure if they reviewed Super Mario Kart.

I swear to god that it's like Edge and I are a hivemind sometimes. Brilliant scores for those games. 64 too high would be my only complaint.

But if they think MK8 is a 9/10, and I agree with the rest of their MK reviews, then let the hype train keep rolling.

I didn't exactly played Child of Light (I watched my GF playing it) but to me it seemed to be more style than substance. So yeah, I can see where this score comes from.

I'm interested in what they had to say about TLOU Remaster and Arkham Knight.

Videogamer has some tidbits

"We brought in all the hi-res models, and then it's on par with what you saw in the cutscenes," Druckmann said, speaking about the upcoming PS4 release with EDGE. "There's an improved lighting model. After that, we started looking across the board; enemies look a little blurry up close, so that was pretty easy. We ramped those up and saw a pretty significant difference.

"Our cinematics are now running at 1080p and 60fps, and that involved rendering them all from scratch," he continued. "It's interesting that now [instead of a technical bottleneck], the bottleneck is 'Can we fit all this on the disc?'"

The Last of Us Remastered launches on PS4 next month.

I must know what this is about. I thought he retired from games? Then again Genki Rockets hasn't done anything for 2 years and their singer has gone solo
Says he is looking forward to returning to development, he teaches transmedia at Keio University. He says while he mentors he also learns a lot from the students. He is assisting on some social games in Japan but wants to create his own project this year or next. Aims to work independent from companies, and assemble a team of freelancers for each project. He has spent the past two years examining wants and desires of the human species, and is trying to draw comparisons to game, social media and technology and it seems like this will inform his next game. And probably the social stuff he is working on.

He also says managing 80 people at Q was very stressful, and he was struggling to think clearly.

After playing the Kinect Sports Rivals. I'm not surprised it got a 5.

Give it up MS. I've no idea why you persist with Kinect It just doesn't work.

I disagree with the Child of Light score, but surely Mercenary Kings wasn't that great. It's the only game on the PS4 that I've uninstalled after just an hour or two.

Child of Light is at least a 6 I think. IGN gave it a 9.3 which is very generous - I think it's just divisive. If you don't connect with the aesthetics I can see you might find it a bit bland.

Mercenary Kings on the other hand I feel a bit sorry for. It's no masterpiece, but give it a bit of time and it does grow on you.

Still like Edge's reviews though. Even though they gave AC4 a 9.

Mario Kart 8 is as essential a purchase as Super Mario 3D World. Whether it will give Nintendo's console the sales boost it so desperately needs is another matter, but the famously cloistered company is at last giving its players the opportunity to reach beyond the Miiverse with its youtube uploads.

However it plays out, Mario Kart 8 is yet another overwhelmingly powerful argument in favour of the company's idiosyncratic approach to design.

High praise indeed.

Reviewers need to just get it over and done with and give all Wii U games an extra 'How likely will it save the Wii U?' out of 10.

Won't moan about the score though. Very pleased. Never thought I'd see a kart racer be getting a 9 in 2014 from EDGE of all places.

I started playing a bit of Mercenary Kings last night, and I "get" that score...is Child of Light really as bad as that game?

Man, I really should get around to playing Hearthstone. It's sitting on my iPad waiting patiently, but I just haven't found the time. The review makes it sound cool.
I'd really like to play it but unfortunately I live in the Android tablet ghetto so I'll get it whenever Blizzard feels like releasing it months from now like most other iOS games.

Did that come across as bitter? Because if it didn't I meant it to.

Completely agree on Child of Light, it's an incredibly poor Grandia ripoff combat wise and extremely short, shallow and easy.

Excellent, thank you for replying

Ouch on Child of Light. A big ouch on Elder Scrolls Online. But is it more because of its unfinished state and bugs or is it a bad game?

Yay, on Mario Kart 8! A big, yay!

When do these magazines usually go on sale state side? I picked up the watch dogs issue just last week at Barnes and noble and I think that's like 2 issues behind this one.

I love EDGE, but there's regularly some scores in particular genres that completely baffle me by consistently missing the point of the games in question. I think if the review's weren't anonymous it'd be clear that there're one or two assy writers on staff.

yes I am mad Child of Light is beautiful and different

Did anyone finish the tic-tac-toe teaser at the end of the digital magazine?

Once you do, it says...

Kinda weird... :|

Not actually that important
Stopped taking EDGE reviews seriously when they gave Rambo a higher score than Lords of Shadow 2

Thanks for letting us know.
What are you even doing here then, you read EDGE on the thread's title and felt the urge to come in and do a driveby shitpost?

Stoked for the MK8 score, they're usually pretty harsh with Nintendo's gimmicks/rehashes so that's another knot in the belt to give me confidence this has the potential to be the best MK game yet.

I still want to try Child of Light, I haven't played it yet so I dunno if I agree or not with the review's text but the premise and visuals definitely appeal to me.
I want to read the MKings review, I love run&gun games, especially ones with purty pixely 16-bit graphics... too bad I've missed the download from PS+. I hate there's almost always no demos anymore to sample games with the new gen consoles.

Great score for Mario Kart 8! I didn't need any confirmation though. Watching a random video of the game speaks for itself.

well if for edge 5/10 means a "a well done game that's has no originality or nothing of interest in particular", then i think that it's a deserved score.

at least isn't as boring as the typical ubisoft game
