Shovel Knight |OT| The 8-bit adventures of Butt Butt Goes to Europe & Australia

Looks like nobody's take this dude for an avatar yet, using him.

I've been warming up my old school platforming skills all week with New Super Mario Bros U, Super Ghouls n' Ghosts, and finally Ghosts n' Goblins for dessert.

My thumbs and my eShop card are ready.

Been playing 1000 spikes, getting ready. I love these style games. The art style in this is just such a great shout to old school.

I backed the game for a 3DS download code, but now I want to play it on Wii U. Anyone who's backed the Wii U version and wants 3DS instead fancy swapping codes? I'm in the UK if it makes a difference.

I switched my Steam key for a 3DS copy. Just asked for it on an email.

kind of a personal response and all so I doubt it's something they're actively doing or promoting, but give it a shot.

Yo, as Aeana knows, I lurk here and adore you guys, but I stay quiet, especially regarding my own projects. I also don't speak on behalf of YCG, so I can't give any official info or customer support.

But just wanted to clarify 2 things you've mentioned:

1) The arrangements (there are now almost a dozen in progress, hahaha hooooly shit) will be Bandcamp-only (digital OST, available to everyone) for now. The backer physical album will be the complete original soundtrack by itself, with super nice artwork and packaging, in a 2-disc set. The digital OST, which anyone can get from day 1, will contain the same music PLUS arrangements, since I am not limited by the capacity of discs... But that first physical CD printing is just for backers, and I hope you enjoy it!

2) YES there will indeed be a streaming release party; At 7PM PST on Thursday the 26th (Launch day!) We're going to listen through the whole soundtrack with webcams set up, as we experience the elation / relief / horror of RELEASE DAY at the YCG office. I'm guessing most of the team will be hunched over their computers, frantically trying to keep up with day-one customer support and PR stuff, but I will do my best to make them all drink themselves into a stupor. They've certainly earned it.

Facebook event is here: https://www.facebook.com/events/452088761594858/ I would LOVE to have all GAF champions there to party with and/or laugh at us.

Fancy seeing you here

I'm glad you finally decided to post~

This is a game that's been on my radar for a while now.

I haven't really looked up much information on this game outside of maybe a couple of trailers, but this is a game that I will be buying as soon as I am able.

I will probably end up double dipping on 3DS and Wii U.

I'm not sure if I should get it for my 3DS or Steam. Part of me wants to play it as a portable game and use Miiverse.... BUT PART OF ME WANTS TRADING CARDS

I know this is a stupid question because of Nintendo, but is there any chance of a discount if you get both Wii U and 3DS versions?

If there is, we'll find out later in the week via NOA's press PR. But I think we would have heard by now from YCG if so. So I'm thinking most likely there will not be.

ETA: just asked YCG, I'll repost once I receive a reply.

Is it normal for press to get codes before backers? This is the only video game Kickstarter I've ever backed.

That's kinda shitty. I don't want people getting codes before me unless they donated at a higher level.

Awesome, thanks.

You do know this is completely up to the dev and nothing Nintendo. Nintendo has the ability to do that.

Actually, I didn't know that.

Just look at the mk8 deal, buy mk8 get a game free. Same could be done with this game.

That was the same platform though.
Has anyone done discount for buying the Wii U and 3DS versions of the same game before? Has there even been an opportunity to do so (I'm struggling to come up with anything beyond MonHun and VC titles that released on both?

I have to agree with this. As a backer it would have been nice to get it before the release date.

While not for the same game, Pushmo World and 1001 spikes had a discount if you owned other games.

So excited. This is pretty much going to be the highlight of my week. This purchase will also push me over into getting another $5 eshop credit voucher via DDP.

I am soooo excited to play this. I grabbed a Wii U key, but between work and getting ready for vacation I'm not sure I'll get much of a chance to play. I might buy it on 3DS for playing on the plane, haha.

just need some confirmation that all 3 versions will play the same? Same framerate, feature parity core gameplay wise etc?

Gonna be hard to decide on version... i like portable, but 3ds xl isn't my favorite dpad... especially if a game requires L button (does this?).

The OT has version differences, take a peek. Some of the differences might make the game more appealing to you on a certain platform.

I'm getting a Wii U key but feel like I should switch to 3DS. I got too much to play on my Wii U and nothing on my 3DS. Not going to double dip for this game...

well yeah those differences are superficial though.

i assume wii u and pc versions will run fine, and probably 3ds too. but hey you never know without asking.

I'm in the opposite situation. I emailed them asking to switch from 3DS to Wii U, but in the event it's not possible do you wanna swap download codes?

Have to agree with this sentiment, too. Especially since I know a few of the "review outlets" that were given codes are little more than fronts to get free games.

But, oh well. I'll just be happy to play the game once it's released.

It is all the same account. 3ds and Wii u uses the same eshop points and in club Nintendo you can see your 3ds and Wii u purchase.

Okay Shovelers, I got some info for you, straight from the source.

The promotional options on this side are more special case-- not just a checkbox. If both versions of the game complimented one another more (transferring save data, substantially different content, or some kind of communication feature between both) then I think this would have been something we really focused on. We've heard a lot of requests though and we're going to see what we can do to make something happen-- although I wouldn't expect anything by time of launch.

Bonus Q: #263 / #270 Paraphrasing down to "Why did press get codes before backers?"

We briefly sent out a message yesterday about this:

For The Curious Backers: Press codes are a completely separate pool from Backer codes. We would not be able to even send out 1k codes today!

To elaborate a little more: A block of press code is an assumed part of releasing a game and so we automatically received a small amount of them in advance to help prepare for the release. We're distributing these codes to people that cover games for a living and need time to prepare their content (be it day job, night time job, or weekend hobby). Backer codes are a special case and so need to be requested separately, most games on the eShop don't require thousands of codes to be made ready on release! We're not lifting codes off the Kickstarter heap to prioritize press, we're using a limited pool of codes for exactly what their purpose is -- and eagerly awaiting the big batch of backer codes.

I had a minor role in the game (assisted Manami Matsumae with the music) and the nice folks at YCG gave us codes for the game. Manami is struggling with the game (although enjoying it!) and I finished it yesterday. It's different from all its inspirations, it doesn't feel or play like Mega Man or Castlevania and that was interesting to discover. It really has its own identity and flavor.

I enjoyed it a lot, definitely the most fun I had this year. My favorite Mega Man games are 9 and 2, and while it's premature to give any grand statements about Shovel Knight, it did impress me as a whole and I found the entire thing to be solid. Level design is fantastic; boss fights are much more interesting and fun than its inspirations; music is up there with my favorite OSTs; mechanics are tight and well balanced. I'm playing NG+ and consistently amazed at how polished and well thought out the game feels. I was around for the music but didn't know anything else about the game, besides the demo I played in BitSummit/Japan, so everything was a delightful surprise.

Just a few more days and the game will be out — eager to see what everyone thinks about it. Won't be surprised for the 9's and 10's it might get from reviewers. I'll save my detailed impressions for when the game is out, much more fun to discuss with everyone, but I'm a very happy backer. :)

I'm worried. I never got a key for my instruction booklet PDF, and when I contacted Humble about it they never got back to me. I hope they send me the key for the actual game.

You might want to double down and contact YCG as well.

Pushmo/Crashmo gave a discount for pushmo world.
I don't see why discounting a different version of the same game would be harder than discounting a different game.

I backed the game for a 3DS version but I received code for a PC review copy. I'll be diving in later today. I will probably get the Wii U version down the road as well. Glad to see this finally coming out this week. Just reeks of a labor of love. I can post some impressions so I'll be back later with those.

I do understand, and I certainly don't intend to make a mountain out of an ant hill, but that reason doesn't really fly for any of us getting Steam codes.

But again, I get it and don't expect them to say, "because the console ports are holding us back."

What are the PC system requirements

I don't see them in the OP and cant find them anywhere
While they should be added, you should be getting optimal settings (bar resolution depending on the monitor) on anything made this side of 2005.
You could probably mod a toaster to play it.
