Will discussion of certain games be banned on Neogaf from here on out?

I was actually kinda worried for a bit there.

even when Nirolak confirmed that SK and AT and shit are okay provided they don't go more hardcore than they're currently at, I still had a nagging feeling.
I don't know why. EO games are not about sex, sexual themes, or even suggestive themes. They're dungeon crawlers where a couple of the avatars kinda look like little girls, and their only presence in the game is that tiny little avatar image in the status screen. I really hope you can see how that's majorly different from something like Criminal Girls.

I can understand the view of the mods and admins. It would be incredibly overwhelming and quite possibly a mind-straining task to have to moderate those topics that involve this subject. And I also agree that GAF has the right to ban which ever games/subjects they don't want shown or discussed on they're forum.
Personally, I think this game is better off not being talked about. I think it's horrid, and shouldn't have a place here.

This sums up my thought on the matter.

In general the idea would not be to ban games where there is moral outrage unless pretty much no mod feels there's any other avenue given the content of the game.

Like we had giant threads about moral outrage over Fire Emblem and Bravely Default, but I think it's pretty obvious that there would be fruitful discussion about other elements of the games.

Just consider that the goal here would actively be to bar as few games as possible and the developer really needs to work hard at making something that could cross the line.

I feel the first thread closing by mod would have went alot smoothly and less dragged out with the explaination given in this thread so its nice to get that. I can't speak for everyone but when censoring starts happening it can cause some to be itchy. While i'm not getting this game or got the Monpiece game because they do cross an uncomfortable line for me it can quickly dissolve into a slippery slope. I've seen some, questionable threads with just as perverse things left open plus there are plenty of people that if shown would be saying similar things about more than one popular anime talked about here. Defining those lines like has been done and giving a valid and reasonable exxplaination was needed.

Serious question: when did neogaf start to have such a huge loli contingent and fanbase? A few years ago when I lurked, there was a poster who'd make loli anime rpg threads and people would ridicule him. He would be the only poster to make those type of threads and posts, but now it seems there's an entire fanbase of the stuff on gaf, and jrpg-gaf in particular is swamped by a bunch of people who like loli rpgs.

Why the shift?

Scalia's majority opinion makes it as clear as day as to what constitutes as child pornography ("A crime is committed only when the speaker believes or intends the listener to believe that the subject of the proposed transaction depicts real children." is literally a line in his majority opinion)
Not only was race dragged into this but now Scalia has his hand in it? And to think I thought it couldn't get any worse.

I wish mods would also show who they are when they ban you. I have 1 ban (I know there are stories and people whine about getting banned) that really was unjust and I took it as it was only a few days but I came into a thread, posted concisely and politely and just because the opinion differed with the tone or disagreed with the content of the OP, I was banned for saying "I disagree with this opinion/article and here's why". It sounds familiar to those who've been posting in that Kotaku WiiU thread but it's not that.

This thread hearkens to how unjust things can be at times and I know this particular game is edgy and NSFW BUT to stunt or slant conversation and cripple an argument based on a contrasting view is not good. You want to be able to have healthy discussion and it's up to mods to put on their thinking caps for a minute and let it be known that in the case of this game or in the same vein as I posted about my banning THAT a differing taste or opinion is ok and if you explain yourself while being polite instead of giving troll like one off remarks, then you deserve to continue to partake in the discussions or talk about games like Criminal Girls.

More ad hominem garbage. You assume I'm a child porn enthusiast instead of defending the ability of other GAF members to discuss the game as long as it doesn't break the currently established rules.

Yes we all can see you passed tenth grade English class. Myself, I got an A on my "logical fallacies" test!

So what.

1000 years old, I heard. Which means I should probably get that thread reopened.

You assume that this is an appropriate forum for discussing new news on games that involve the sexualization of little kids.
1000?! Forre..

Nope.

I'm sure the cast of Criminal Girls can be handily "localized" as 18 or whatever the age of consent is in your territory of choice. But let's be real -- they look like kids. Kids with giant titties, in some cases, but still kids.

What will be really interesting is when a game inevitably comes along that features good gameplay, good design, and a mature story -- but also has sequences where you brutally rape someone in graphic detail. A game where someone could find the rape titillating (someone perverse, mind you), but the game itself can't be accused of otaku pandering or fan service or whatever. It's been easy to dismiss these perverted games so far because their perverse acts are all they have, but what if such sequences were bound up in something more? Will a different standard apply?

Watcha mean? Threads get closed all the time(Tumblr sucks thread in the off topic section for instance). As long as there is a policy being introduced, nothing really to worry about.(And the mods have pretty much clarified what that new policy is).

Many threads closing has also been a little problematic IMO (thought some truly got uncontrollable) . But is mod general policy so I will not going to say more

Perhaps there's a moderator on our staff that wouldn't mind being the fanservice thread mod, but I don't want the job. And several of the other people on staff don't want it either.

That sounds like an honored distinction.

The mod that kept the fan-service clean and the haters at bay.

I don't know how much I buy that. Alot of it to me seems like much easier access to content worldwide via the internet. And I feel western consumers of Japanese media who are most vocal on the internet kind of self select what kind of Japanese media dominates the discussion.

Add to that you have a section of Japanese games not looked on Japanese at all (various first party Nintendo games for instance).

As for Criminal Girls, I just feel the Barbara Streisand effect is in operation.

Uh, did you just read my cliffnotes version, or did you read the 5-part, well documented, heavily sourced article I linked? Because I don't know how you couldn't "buy it" after reading the article.

Thanks for the response, I appreciate it.

So for example, there was a game called "No, Thank You!!!" just recently announced for a North American English release for the PC. It's a gay themed VN featuring adult characters, but it also includes sex scenes. As long as no pictures of the adult content were posted, and the discussion wasn't based around the explicit details of the sexual content, would a discussion topic/OT for the game be allowed?

I would totally understand if it wasn't, but if it was, I would like to be able to talk about it here, because this is a safe space to do so without it turning into some pariah topic, where you have to defend the very existance of a game not made with straight male gamers in mind.
I'd be fine with a discussion of that game, with the caveat that it's heavily moderated to ensure no explicit content. Give me a shout via PM and we can set something up if you like.

Anyone want to take best on how long before Settin gets a permaban?

It does seem that GAF has a growing number of Loli/pedo obsessed people. I find it incredibly disturbing.

Umm...

I have some bad news for you...

Alright, yeah, obviously it's not the norm. But still, have to make sure to turn Safesearch on for any computers being used in schools.

EO is not in danger here.

Well that's cool. I know the game in question is a completely different problem, but I don't think designs like those found in EO games or characters like Nowi from Fire Emblem Awakening are leaving Japanese games or anime anytime soon and Neogaf is one of the most sanitary places to discuss those subjects online.

Watch Da Birdie

I buy cakes for myself on my birthday it's not weird lots of people do it I bet
I'm actually put off by the art-style of the EO games to the point I don't really want to buy them, even though the gameplay looks right up my alley. At the very least, I don't think I could bring myself to buy a retail copy and have that box in my house.

Same reason I've yet to buy Bravely Default lol.

nah I get that. fully agree.

nothing happens in EO so really, the series is small time and couldn't be farther away from "in yo face" sexualization like Criminal Girls.

Ok real talk time

I made the last thread for more people to be aware of this game coming over here. This game looks bad, from graphics to content. No one should support bad games like this being localized and a message should be sent to NISA to stop scraping the bottom of the barrel for releases.

I don't want to see more shit games from NISA and I hope mods can make sure that there is an outlet on gaf to voice their opinion on it so NISA can see it.

No problem with that mwueheheheheh

Anyone that thinks EO characters are designed to become a source of repugnant sexual fetishes need to get their brains replaced.

i would do the same thing. i'm not havin' that retina burning bullshit. dark theme 4 lyfe.

GAF's Dark theme is awful.

We have had to bust up Pokemon threads for going off the rails into creepytown. And Sonic threads. And Animal Crossing threads. Some people will do whatever they can to sexualize anything.

I could be wrong about this, but my perception is that overall GAF membership and activity has risen since I started lurking and became a member. It's only natural that new communities would arise from this growth.

So what.
An ad hominem (Latin for "to the man" or "to the person"[1]), short for argumentum ad hominem, is a general category of fallacies in which a claim or argument is rejected on the basis of some irrelevant fact about the author of or the person presenting the claim or argument.
I hope you realize the irony of your post.

There's a market for it, unfortunately. It comes partly from the culture certain systems have cultivated and the acceptance of the fanbase to try anything as long as publishers keep bringing games to their system of choice.

Plus the people who buy these kinds of games are the types to evangelize it on message boards and spend $100 for the extra special edition with the waterproof poster because you-know-why. It's easy money for simple reasons.

I've had a bug up my ass about NISA for years now and the downward slide I saw them going down has been pretty much continuing unabated. I am shocked this is the thing that makes everyone go "Wait, what."

While I certainly understand the collector mindset (as I have it myself, to a degree) I can't help but agree with the first two points.

Now as for this being the trigger game, I don't really have a problem seeing why. I know a lot of "fans" bitched about Mugen Souls censorship, the reason for which, if I recall correctly, being that NISA wanted a T instead of an M to better hit their audience or the like, but aside from that I'm failing to think of any SUPER pander-y games that they put out. Neptunia is an offender, but nothing like this.

I'm also not a fan of censorship, but that's a discussion for a different day or pms.

I'd love for you to name some titles that are actually worth my time that fit such a criteria; and aside from that, it's not the fact that the game has no merits beyond fanservice, it's that the discussion (if you're brazen enough to call it that, often read more like a shouting match) that stems as a result was often uncivil, circular, and separate from the merits of the game, something that a board focused on gaming could do without.

How am I supposed to know whether the games are worth your time...?
I won't be playing this game, as I said before. I am not interested in games like Conception 2 or Senran Kagura or whatever else either. But there are still people that legitimately like those games for more than just the fanservice, and there will definitely be more of those kind of Vita games in the future. If Senran Kagura Versus comes to NA are threads about that going to be banned too? It's more sexually explicit than the 3DS one IIRC and features girls that are around 15 years old. This is the kind of stuff I'm wondering about.
