Harmonix Surveying for New Rock Band Title

A bonus note for all those Harmonix people.

I think Rock Band 4 would be the first thing I would ever consider kickstarting.

Or instead of Rock Band 4 ... I think Rock Band: Reunion Tour would be a boss name.
Hamonix jokingly said they were considering a stretch goal for the Amplitude that would be 1 million dollars and it would fund RB4. So I doubt they could do a kick starter for RB4 unless it's raising money for like only peripherals or something (which I would totally back).

I hate how limited surveys are, I can say that backwards compatibility is my most wanted feature, but I can't say that it is also a deal breaker. Also they need to bring back RB2's round robin for online quickplay not that stupid free for all that was in RB3.

Yo if you haven't done the survey at the end make sure to check "Release a Rock Band with full set of instruments".

All my stuff is on it's last leg, I need new instruments that don't cost crazy money to get new.

The only thing I really, really want out of a new Rock Band is for the music I like to be in the game this time. Closest Harmonix ever came was Rock Band 2 with Lush and Sonic Youth, and Rock Band 3 with Pretty Girls Make Graves and Rilo Kiley (plus the Sleater-Kinney and Neko Case DLC). I realize that's a ridiculous request, because no way in hell are my tastes popular enough to justify making the disc or even a significant number of DLC tracks suit them, but that's what would really bring me back.

poop meter feature creep
my priority list said:
Compatibility of existing hardware
Compatibility of existing DLC
Local multiplayer
A large on-disc soundtrack
The ability to create and customize my own character
New weekly DLC
A fixed campaign mode
Online multiplayer
Competing with the world through leaderboards
Pro instruments and Pro lessons
Regularly updated in-game events (Tour Challenges, Battle of the Bands, etc.)
A variety of venues to play in

Where's my option for Japanese rock/pop music? At the very least, they should add an option to play your own music files in the game, even if it's limited to local play only, with a cheap and easy way to add custom button notation. Then they could survey the most popular custom user songs through their service and offer official versions as DLC.

You mean RBN?

That's the only way it was happening. The other way is a copyright enforcement nightmare.

I actually never got into RB, because I was a GA guy when the games were still coming out and couldnt find a decently priced set of RB controllers in decent condition after the fact. So yes, Harmonix, give us another game with updated instruments!

Survey filled out by myself, and my girlfriend.

Soooooooooooooo excited about this!!

We spent countless hours rocking out together.

Filled the survey, I still play RB3 a couple of times a week so as long as we get DLC and instrument compatibility I'm set :D

I went and made a damn duplicate thread I was so excited!

I'd seriously be happy with a blitz style "rock band player" that jsut worked with my DLC and controllers. THats how desperate for a current gen RB I am.

Done the survey, I would love a new Rock Band game. Would be nice to transfer DLC but all my games are on Xbox 360 and I have a PS4 and Wii U now so it's not likely I'll be able to to transfer to one of those. Really hope they go ahead and make a new one, Rock Band & Guitar Hero are one of my favourite games.

I was talking about this with my friend, and talking through the logic made me sad. This is kind of a funny situation, because I started playing Rock Band last gen on the PS3. But it eventually became clear that the PS3 was getting a sub-par experience vs. the 360, so I spent a lot of money re-buying instruments and songs on that system, and gave my PS3 games and instruments to my nephew (which means they're destroyed by now). My friend also made that migration.

Anyway, here's the progression of our thoughts as we talked it through.

1. I'd like my DLC to work...but wait, that DLC is on the 360, and I'd probably prefer to play RB4 on the PS4. Well, maybe this will be my go-to XB1 game.

2. I'd like my instruments to work...but they're 360 controllers, and that's not likely to happen; Microsoft would have to allow it. The PS3 instruments might work on PS4, since they're USB...but I don't have any.

3. Okay, scratch all that. New game, new instruments. I'll just play the old stuff on the 360 if I want to play it. I still do, after all.

4. Wait a moment...new instruments. New Rock Band instruments. I'm using Guitar Hero guitars because the Rock Band instruments are all terrible. They never made a single decent one. I went through so many, and they are ALL. COMPLETE. SHIT. The Guitar Hero World Tour and GH5 ones I have now are great. I'd almost forgotten all the non-functional, short-lived or laggy controllers I went through over the years. It's going to be a sad, sad day when my guitar controllers finally stop working. They've been champs, though.

5. So...I think I'd rather just have more songs on the 360, thanks. I've spent so, so much money on Rock Band over the years, and it finally works perfectly. Just give me the handful of songs that were, unfortunately, exclusive to the awful Guitar Hero franchise: Guns N Roses (Appetite for Destruction), Hotel California and a few other Eagles songs, Van Halen. That'll do.

I'd like They Might Be Giants in Rock Band 4, please and thank you.

Thanks for the laugh. I love me some TMBG, but it doesn't seem like it would translate. Better hold out for:

Not all that many TMBG songs are driven by the accordion, though! Guitar/bass/keys/drums/vox would cover the majority of TMBG's catalog.

I can't dig up the quote from Flans about this (I think it was on Tumblr a few years ago), but apparently there were conversations about getting one or more songs in Rock Band. Harmonix wanted something from Flood, but (1) it's an early digital recording, (2) they don't have the original stems in any form; Elektra even lost an instrumental set that TMBG lent them, and (3) the cost of tracking down the stems, finding gear that could play those files, transferring them to Pro Tools or something more modern, splitting any revenue however many ways, etc. would never be recouped.

Interesting.

My post was just an easy joke. I can think of a handful that would work fine. "The Guitar", off the top of my head (duh). Or "I Palindrome I". And of course, the old Guitar Hero / Rock Band tradition of playing other instruments on the guitar controller means anything would work if they wanted it to.

Actually, "Absolutely Bill's Mood" would be fucking amazing and hilarious - which describes TMBG pretty much overall. :)

That's not entirely true. The Fender Strat wooden replica RB guitars were great (someone linked to one on the first page I believe). I have the sunburst version and it feels better quality than my RB Pro Squier.

I also have a premium Logitech wirelss guitar (GH themed though) that is great to use. I like the strum bar better on the Logitech, but prefer the RB buttons on the neck.

Yeah I have no idea what he's talking about. Still have my Beatles drumset from 2010, and my Strat from the RB2 bundle from 2009 is still going strong. Maybe he just had severe bad luck.

RB1 strats were crap, the later ones were great

Are the main fret buttons still ridiculously large and close together? Biggest issue is my small girl hands and short fingers couldn't seperate enough to hit the first four frets comfortably without hitting another fret in the process or getting a finger caught between frets. My GH3 controllers buttons are absolutely perfect.

They never changed the fret buttons. I think the answer to that has always been "use the solo buttons", unfortunately.

I didn't notice because I have xbox heuge hands

The RB1 strum bar was definitely mushy. The RB2/3 strum bar got rid of the mush.

The Woodstrat has a clicking strumbar. But the woodstrat is even rarer and more expensive than normal Strats.

They never changed the fret designs eh? Thank god I voted for hardware and DLC compatibility as the top 2 choices in the recent RB survey HMX put out lately then. I hope more people vote for those 2 first as well.

Still have a drumset, mic, and two guitars in the corner of our living room.

Give me hardware compatibility followed by DLC compatibility (at least anything that is still/can be licensed out).

Bring on a day one massive/new/more diverse catalog and I'd be happy to pick it up day one.

I want all options.

I like the Guitar Hero 2 guitar and have 3 that work. My drums are kind of beat though, would like a new set.

I don't care for the 'pro' controllers, would much rather prefer a rocksmith approach if they went that route.

The ability to switch my 360 dlc to ps4 would be huge.

Question is though, how would wired and wireless legacy controllers work with the new console hardware though? I assume a USB hub for the controllers connected by wires to work with the new systems USB drivers, but for wireless? Could wireless functionality be thrown into a USB hub as well? I'd imagine the thing would get pretty bloody big if it did.

Yep, although it's almost guaranteed if Harmonix jumps back in, Activision will too.

But yeah, it's the same frets as the other strats. This is the Woodstrat compared to the Xplorer:

Although on the woodstrat the solo buttons and the main frets are waaaaay far apart since it's a real guitar body.

Wired would just be drivers. Wireless gets more interesting because on the 360, it was a proprietary wireless setup and I'm not sure the One can natively connect to it. They would have to do some sort of dongle thing.

Pink Floyd or bust.

How about...Pink Floyd and Tool...and you are the bomb Harmonix. Some Lead Zeppelin would be nice too.

It's kind of sad when bands feel they have so much integrity that they can't associate themselves with a game, without special circumstances, or just outright refuse. If any developer has the integrity to do these bands justice, it's harmonix. It was a bummer that Tool chose to work with Activision on GH4, their implementation and artwork didn't do the concept justice.

Btw, was it ever confirmed that the character move sets were reduced in RB3? I seem to recall RB2 characters being a bit more lively or varied during the songs.

---

GH4/GH5 guitars were the best. Good thing I bought 2 of the latter... one of them has finally broken over the years. Still have beatles drumset with the pro attachments, unused beatles bass guitar, and a keyboard (barely use it though).

Yup. They also limited the character movesets to certain genres, which limited the animation even more. Seeing a character headbang violently and bounce about to an atmospheric keyboard intro solo in a metal song is hilarious.

Yeah, in the Rock Band community I played with, it was generally agreed the animations were a downgrade from RB2 to 3.

Ah thanks. So I'm not crazy! I think what tipped me off was the repeat of animations in RB3. Quite a shame because I often use the performance mode/no-fail with a long setlist and just have the band play in the background.

:(

I'm good with what I have now. Besides, those aren't any more likely to be forward compatible than the ones I'm using, are they?

But let me re-phrase: every one I ever tried was horrible, and I tried a lot. I bought them, played them, sent them back, wore them out, operated on them, Frankensteined my own out of multiple broken-in-different-ways units, with results varying from utter waste to "just good enough to keep playing". But eventually, I gave up and stuck with the excellent World Tour guitar. Other than having no solo buttons, it's perfect. I wasn't aware of the various wood or metal guitars until later, hell, they probably didn't exist at the time. But I was done throwing money at the problem by that point. I have 3 that work great. I'm wasn't going down that road of shit again.

The 360 RROD fiasco has nothing on the mountains of useless plastic guitars clogging up landfills across the country.

Oh, and my original Guitar Hero black guitar and GH 2 red guitar - single purchases - still work after years of heavy use. I went through several USB adapters trying to get them to work with my PS3, too, but that's just an asterisk to this tale (none worked, even though some had specific modes that were supposed to). That's not to say I didn't encounter any non-working GH controllers (GH3 ones were crap IIRC), but Rock Band guitars can go fuck themselves in hell.
