The 2015 RPG thread - A weak sequel but still a good year

Nice thread.
I don't want to be disappointed by Pillars of Eternity.
I didn't like the beta, but I can't wait to play the final release of this game since it looks like they have improved a lot of things since the beta.

There are a lot of interesting projects this year. Pillars of Eternity is without question the one I am most excited to play, but I wouldn't be shocked if, like last year, we get a deeper field of quality titles than most people anticipated.

My Bloodborne hype is really suffering from the fact that we just got Dark Souls 2 last year and it's launching the same month as a game that has absolute priority over it.

Personally speaking and in terms of releases that i'm excited for Bloodborne,Final Fantasy Type-0 HD,Xenoblade Chronicles X,Dark Souls 2 SOTFS,The Witcher 3 completely obliterate 2014 in terms of RPGs.

I would copy and paste that table to add one or two others like Disgaea 5 but that table is just an utter mess when copied/pasted into a new reply. (or when quoted).

Not sure how you got it looking so nice in the op there.

Oh, another potential correction for the Tales of Zestiria table entry is that the battles don't really take place on a different screen from the field screen. It's one of Zestiria's new features.

Yeah, 2014 has absolutely nothing on 2015 for RPGs.

Etrian Mystery Dungeon
Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker

are missing. no idea about the other table info

Does Mother 4 count? It has no official release date but it's likely to be this year (I hope).

What the hell are you smoking. In no way shape or form has this even be hinted at being in existence.

I am cautiously optimistic. We had a few barren years for RPGs recently, but if you look at games in general, GAF always thinks the coming year is going to be the best ever.

The problem with other years tend to be delays, but this year seems more concrete with it's releases, partly due to the fact that some of the games being released were delayed to 2015 from 2014.

I still have high hopes for Fallout coming this holiday season. Main interests that are official are Witcher 3 and Bloodborne. I've actually had a really hard time getting into JRPG and isometric WRPG lately.

Persona 5 is by far my most hyped game in a long time let alone RPG. As for the ones in the OP, some decent ones and even though it's my favourite genre I can't say I'm THAT excited about a lot of em.

I'd say Persona 5 and the new Ys game for PS4 are my most hyped, not sure if it the latter is 2015. Also xenoblade.

I'm not sure if you've just put PC if it's a console exclusive but I'm pretty sure Darkest Dungeon is coming to PS4.

Shadowrun HK and PoE got this year on lock down, at least for role playing games. Also waiting to hear what Larian studios are up to.

Oh yeah The Banner Saga 2 comes out this year I think as well.

Persona 5's probably my most anticipated RPG ever. Certainly makes 2015 better than most years when it comes to RPGs by itself, for me. The rest I'm looking forward to this year:

- Etrian Mystery Dungeon
- Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker
- Bloodborne

Never played Xenoblade Chronicles, but X has me interested.

Xenoblade Chronicles is all the hype this year needs to be better than 2014.

A couple of Etrian Odyssey games being tossed our way is just gravy.

OP should be ashamed. A bunch of low profile games, yet Persona 5 nowhere in sight?

Torment, Pillars of Eternity, and The Witcher 3 all have a solid chance at outselling Persona 5. PC games have been on a hot streak with the rise of Steam.

Outside of Japan, Persona 5 is a low profile game itself. 500k in the west would probably be a franchise best.

Damn, lack of pics and write-ups definitely makes this thread a weak sequel :(. I hope that if you get some more free time you'll add in more Durante! I really loved seeing them all last year and referred to that list several times to check what was coming up.

Anyways, 2015 is looking like a better year than 2014 for me:

Persona 5
The Witcher 3
Bloodborne
Pillars of Eternity
Kingdom Come: Deliverance

All of these games above have the potential to be GOAT status for me, and that's not even counting the others that I'm still hyped for like The Banner Saga 2 (no stupid boss fights that ruin the game this time pls).

I still have high hopes for Fallout coming this holiday season.

That would just mess up my whole gaming schedule. 200 hours just out the fucking window.

Not very hyped for this year.
Apart from Atelier, The Witcher
(and Persona, if Atlus doesn't screw Europe over once again)
, nothing I really look forward too that much in the list...

I think the year looks fine.

Added, thanks.

I remember Project Phoenix.

Japan's "indie RPG featuring AAA talent".

The "revival" of JRPG.

"Top developers" from the East and the West.

Achieved $1 million of $100,000 goal.

And then we get this:

Yeah, I normally don't take much joy in pointing and laughing at games, but this one deserves it.

heathens! :p
The expansions redeemed it somewhat, but the NWN1 OC is still one of the worst PoS I ever played.

I simply wasn't aware. Corrected.

We are making a rich, immersive game that will set a new standard of excellence for the Japanese gaming industry, all without major studio backing! Although we have a large array of top talent, we are JRPG fans first and foremost and wish to create a game worthy of longstanding JRPG fans who truly deserve it. In doing so, we will become a phoenix that will rise from the ashes to forge a new direction for the Japanese games industry through a work that awes and inspires all.

I didn't know being a Warcraft 3 clone/knock-off promises JRPG revival.

Also, this is the better year for RPG as far as I am concerned.

>Bloodborne
>Witcher 3
>Xenoblade X
>Tales of Zestiria
>Trails in the Sky SC
>FFXV: Episode Duscae
>FF Type-0 HD
>Persona 5
>Cosmic Star Heroine
>Grim Dawn
>Pillars of Eternity

A weak sequel? If we get Persona 5 this year, along with Bloodborne, Xenoblade, Type-0 and the FF XV demo it's gonna be the best year in maybe a decade lol.

Another great year.

Personally I'm most jazzed for Pillars, Underrail, Serpent, SR HK and Darkest Dungeon.

I was hyped for Project Pheonix but after seeing that demo, it looks like they are making a Warcraft type clone ( sans the base building ) when it initially sounded like they were going for a Shining Force type SRPG. Complete disappointment.

Persona 5
Pillars of Eternity
Xenoblade Chronicles X

Honestly I'd be excited if Persona 5 and Xenoblade X were the only games coming. I'm looking forward to them so much.

To fill in the blanks for Final Fantasy Type 0 HD:

No co-op
Linear story, but with some freedom in between missions
Action combat
Free positioning
No dialogue trees or checks for the main story
World map
Separate screen from combat on the world map, but not in missions.

Well, to be fair there actually -is- involvement from "top developers" from both East and West. Management and direction on the other hand...

I dunno, a lot of people say 'you can't throw money at a franchise and make a game' and 'talent matters' (see: Infinity Ward/COD around MW2 fiasco) but being able to tie together everything is just about as important.

But yeah despite being massively hyped for Project Phoenix, I'm kinda underwhelmed from last month's video.

p.s. falkOCD coming through:
- "Shallie", not "Shalliee"
- "Zestiria", not "Zesteria"

Carry on.

Someone else mentioned it, but not sure if it counts since it's a rerelease. There is a significant amount of additional content added though. Details for Devil Survivor Record Breaker:

Party: Yes
Perspective: Isometric
Co-op: No
Structure: Linear
Time: TB
Positioning: Squares
Trees: Kind of, there's a good amount of branching in the story, but it's just as dependant on who you spend time with as what you actually say.
Checks: No
World: Sort of, it's entirely menu driven outside of battles
Battles: No
Release: 2015, might be May, but not confirmed
Platform: 3DS

backed Pillars, Cosmic Star Heroine and Torment (which is not coming out this year), looking forward to Shadowrun, Witcher 3, Banner Saga 2 and maybe picking up Trails in the Sky, Bravely Second and Age of Decadence along the way

Assuming all of those meet expectations. If P5 and Xenoblade are disappointing follow ups, the same "best year ever!" people will be calling 2015 shit this December.
