I'm sure his writers will remain American.

Oliver does perfectly fine without being American. In fact it gives him a better perspective for broader global issues. I'd imagine Trevor will have some interesting things to say about immigration, for instance.

Yeah, Oliver does great.

Didn't everyone think Jon Stewart was a bad choice as well initially?

Jon Stewart was a huge unknown quantity after Killborn left, most knew him from some generally terrible MTV shows and TDS was more interview and comedy than anything else.
TDS could stand to go through another evolution with a new host, and I have no problems trusting a new guy at the desk. People saying now they won't watch Trevor Noah are talking crazy.

bu-bu-but Brian Williams is gonna need a job right around the time Stewart officially leaves. Why not him? ;)

Most of the other correspondents seem like they always have one foot out of the door anyways - more like TDS was a part-time gig rather than aiming for higher status within the show (because not much point in that given the host turnover rate...). So I'm not really surprised they went outside the fold.

Wasn't too familiar with Trevor's work before, but he seems like he has a great voice for the reporting part of the gig and seems like he does a good turn at dry humor. The "news" portion of the TDS job is almost on autopilot these days since they mostly just need to flash quick clips of Fox News and/or politicians totally contradicting themselves and maybe they can lean on the correspondents a bit more than they have recently. For interviews, his voice and mild-manner will probably work well for him, assuming he can about as prepared as Stewart generally is.

That can very easily be a good thing.

Oh yes, exactly, that's why I'm excited even if I don't know what I think of his material so far. Part of the problem is that the correspondent exchanges are always where the show's scripted nature shows through the most, and it usually leads them to being not as tight. Who knows how good he'll be as a host when he and Jon aren't trying to time some pre-written jokes correctly

It's a recurring theme in 'that's racist!' where he says how people who speak Afrikaans think he's bullshitting because he can say 'I can't speak Afrikaans' and then he goes to the US and Mexicans keep speaking Spanish to him and he only knows 'I can't speak Spanish' and then he's telling a story about visiting France, etc, etc...

But he's a comedian so he may actually be able to speak all these languages.

Oh, I see. Thanks for the clarification!

Think back to when John started. There wasn't really anything in his act that made him particularly destined for greatness. He grew into the show and became the host it needed. This guy has a good stand-up game so if he's keen on the material he may do fantastic. Looking forward to watching it.

Oliver immigrated here and worked for a long time on the show. But even Oliver didn't completely replace Jon like what Mr. Noah is doing.

Plus if they think the show is going do have the same ratings with more international reports they have another thing coming. So much of the backbone of the show has been reports of odd or eccentric America stories or poignant observation of hypocrisy or the American political system. Only 36% of Americans even have passports and it would be safe to assume that many of those have not left the nation.

If Noah intends to do more international flavored reports about say Greek austerity, Germany and its influence in the EU, England media or its instance of very public compulsory surveillance and its movement towards internet censorship its not going to get the same reaction from the American audience.

I think part of the reason why the show worked that despite uncovering the flaws of America you could tell that there was still a deep ingrained love of it. Like having a child that wets his bed over and over again. Sure you are pissed that you have a mess to clean up and it and it almost never seems like its stops but that doesn't stop you from loving the kid.

ugh another British accented dude telling Americans what is wrong with America... no thanks

This shtick is getting old, ''look I am British (Piers Morgan, John Oliver blablaba) and I am making fun of you! telling YOu what is wrong with you''

I will pass

Interesting choice. Don't really know who I was pulling for. I'll give him a shot hopefully he does well.
I did watch some of his stand up stuff and it was pretty funny.

The South African accent is markedly different from the British accent.

that's not the point, the point is an outside English accented non-American telling Americans what is wrong with them. I find it patronizing and unfunny

I rather be it an American from the inside making fun of themselves.

it's like uh uh uh he is a different accent, makes him sound smarter than us ugugugu he must be right uh huhuh

how long did it take for people to realize that Piers Morgan was a total asshat?

Noah is South African and Piers sucks.

Fail to see the problem.

About 10 minutes. But Piers wasn't a comedian on his program. There is a difference.

Around the time he was born.

Gaf negative reaction....I think this guys has a chance. Gaf usually is wrong on many accounts.

I saw one of his stand up shows on Netflix and thought the guy was funny. Will still watch.

Accents are not a schtick, and anybody who paid any attention to British media knew Piers Morgan was a knob day one.

You aren't making a lick of sense.

No bald cap? Lies!
Aasif is too old. I love him but it just wasn't gonna happen. I'm kind of surprised Wilmore got his show considering he's 53. Aasif looks great but he's 50. Stewart is only 2 years older. CC wants someone that can go the distance and be somewhat relevant age wise for much of it. Trevor is 31, if he's lucky enough to go 17 years he'll only be 48, but Aasif would be 67. That's not exactly a great pull for 18-34.

Hmm I've seen a couple of his bits and he certainly has a lot of potential.

But those are some big shoes to fill...

Serious Sam is a wicked gahbidge series for chowdaheads.
It's a great choice. Funnily enough I had thought of Noah as the only real choice once Sam Bee and Jason Jones announced they were leaving, too.

Awesome! Now cancel that dreadful Willmore show and make TDS 45 minutes, no interviews for movie stars.

He'll never fill those shoes. He'll have to put on his own shoes and take the show in a different direction with a different feel. The worst thing they could do to him is write for him the same way they wrote for Stewart.

I don't know anything about him but If he's intelligent, has good delivery and the writing team comes through, it could be fine. I hope it is.

You're never gonna get another Stewart though, one of a kind, regardless of the Colbert's and Oliver's that sprang out from under him and became his equals in their own way.

I'm not familiar with him, but I thought the clip posted of him was funny. I think it will be a different show, but it should still be possible for it to be a good one.

You guys realize that Stewart wasn't a one man comedy machine. They have an army of writers that do the show. This dude will do fine.

I think with time Trevor can grow into this very well. Some other people have pointed out that he isn't a straight up goofball like Jordan Klepper or Jason Jones on the show, but he seems incredibly intelligent and will play a straight man role like Jon Stewart well.

He has a lot of golden material coming his way with the primaries and 2016 elections. I wish him the best.

I see what Stewart & Co are doing. I think it is perfect. They're elevating someone who is incredibly worldly to a worldly position. I bet you in a few years this will be known as the moment a perfect choice was made for his replacement.

Per Bill Simmons; the first three choices were Amy Poehler, Louis CK, and Amy Schumer. Alas, they all turned down the offer.
