OK now settle down

*starts rubbing Sean's shoulders*

It looks like you're not feeling skell

Just take it easy and you'll get skell soon

Neiteio stop it! My poor cousin is trying to sleep in the other room! I can't be busting out laughing like this all the time!

What kind of name is CAAAAAAAAAAAW anyways?

Is he a raven or something? Ravens can't type! Or talk.

Unless... unless he's one of those spooky Edgar Allan Poe ravens

Totally different situation. Mechs are the common, generic name for them regardless. In any game/series they're all still mechs, no matter what someone comes up with. A Gundam/Mobile Suit is still a Mech, a Gear is still a mech, AWGS are still Mechs, a Metal Gear is still a Mech. A Skell is still a Mech and many people will call them mechs, hell even their own team couldn't get used to calling them Skells and still called them Mechs and corrected themselves over and over. You'll have plenty of people here calling them Mechs.

Fair enough, but I meant it more in terms of avoiding the word "Skell". After playing the game for 100+ hours and talking about it on GAF or with friends on a regular basis, I'm sure Skell will eventually become normalized to you. You'll probably forget how much you hate the word given time.

I'm pretty sure it'll keep autocorrecting to skill every time for me anyway.

How do you pronounce Skell? Does it come from skeleton? =P

Exoskeleton?

No way. He'll never forgive. Never forget.

On his table are framed pictures of his friends and family, all murdered by the word Skell. As he does sit-ups, the pictures continually come into sight... A grim reminder.

"I'll get you someday, Skell," Sean said, rigorously training for the inevitable final battle with the word Skell on the rim of an erupting volcano.

Meanwhile, in its dark tower, the word Skell stands... waiting.

Hey, I never once said AWGS even after doing 100% of everything in all 3 Xenosaga games multiple times.

Though to be fair Eggs is way more awkward to say than Skell.

Man... I just don't know about Xenoblade Chronicles X yet. I used to be excited for it, and I still want to be, but the more I learn and think about it the less happy I am with the direction they're taking this game in compared to the original.

The "create-an-avatar" main character, the lack of focus on the narrative and characters (compared to the original XC), being based in reality, the so-edgy-I-could-cut-myself rap theme for normal battles... more and more, I'm thinking this game might just not be for me.

Any other fans of the original game possibly finding themselves in this camp? Note that I'm not trying to say "this game looks crappy" or that I don't understand why others are still hyped for it. It looks fantastic, it's just that it looks fantastic in several ways that don't appeal to me personally. It seems to be even more rooted in WRPG design philosophy than the original game was, but the original still had that all-important JRPG focus on a strong, linear story and characters.

Of course it's too early to say for sure, but I don't think my feeling this way is a coincidence. Even MonolithSoft has said they're intentionally focusing less on story and characters in XCX compared to XC. :(

Thoughts?

These are the types of concerns we had when they initially announced that it's an open world RPG. It's definitley NOT too early to say, considering we've seen hours and hours of gameplay, hours of video presentations explaining the game, and tons of trailers etc showing off various aspects, enought to analyze the game and know tons about it. I have to ask, what have you been following in regards to the game so far?

Maybe you haven't been around the entire time, but let me address some of your concerns in brief. I think most of the Xenoblade fans who've been concerned have mostly started to be even more excited about this game, since it very honestly seems to be improving in virtually EVERY aspect you can think of. At worst, you should try the game and see, but even then, don't compare it to Xenoblade, play it for it's own merit and then weigh them against each other at the end. Don't deny yourself from enjoying the game just because you're expecting it to just be another Xenoblade.

Anyways, have you seen the infamous Famitsu review? They complained that there was TOO much story.

9 / An intricate and involved story, tough difficulty that will give you a solid challenge, and a system with high usability make this a wonderfully old-school RPG in the best sense of the term. The massive open world is crammed with countless stories, and giving them all their due takes time and hard work. The Dolls that you can pilot offer dynamic control, transformations and a rich variety of customization; enough to send any robo-head into a tizzy. There’s so much to do that it can be overwhelming at times, but it also feels very substantial.

8 / A massive title perfectly suited to the word “epic.” The vast game world is beautiful, with vistas changing come day or night, providing an endless source of excitement. The explanation of the world is handled with care, but movies break the action up again and again, slowing down the pacing, which is a bit of a shame. The tempo of the conversations could have done with being a bit faster, too. In terms of battle, it’s great that you can really go on the offensive once you have the system down. The enemies, Dolls and attacks launched from custom parts are all very appealing too.

8 / There’s zero stress in adventuring across the open world, which can be traversed seamlessly, and there are also many elements that take advantage of the size of the map, making moving around and exploring a lot of fun. Battle has a great tempo, combining an action game with command inputs, and is very strategic too. The story is told with care, and you want to find out what happens next, but it also gives you a strong feeling of just sitting there watching movies. Furthermore, a lot of details about the game system are left unexplained, leaving me with an impression of having to blindly stumble through things myself.

Lack of focus on characters? If anything, they are going way more in depth with each character, giving much more back story, delving further into characterization and devlopment than Xenoblade ever did. This short story highlights some of that: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NZO8F6qMK8cWr8LYhj4g4P7Quu-_jZadkQXyFBaLm6g/pub

Watch the Direct videos to get some examples of the humorous banter, the jokes between characters, etc. Here's a couple examples: https://youtu.be/kjTzuqyQZlc?t=20m58s, https://youtu.be/E3l9Vp62KX4?t=27m1s.

The game is definitely going for more of an open world design, and yeah that has certain implications, but it doesn't mean they are foresaking the JRPG elements we love. If anything, they seem to be taking JRPGs and advancing them, by taking some of the best elements of western design, mixing them all together with the best of both. It's definitely not going to be a LINEAR game, but there's nothing wrong with an 'open' game. 'open world' doesn't necessitate a weak story focus, even if most developers haven't been able to put them both together. This game looks to do that.

I don't think you're wrong having these concerns, in fact we've had these same concerns. But I think from everything they've shown you can be confident that although this game will have a different APPROACH, it'll be every bit as enjoyable, if not more than the first game. They'll be two distinct games, but they'll both be great, and they'll both be amazing in fact.

In regards to music, I wasn't too crazy about all the vocals, but everything else we've heard indicates some very on point instrumentals, awesome cutscene music, charming and unique area themes, tons of variety, even many of the vocal tracks are good, even if we don't necessarily ALL love every track. Maybe try listening to some of the other music in context to get a better feel for how good it is. (https://youtu.be/4UwJbZIFOTU)

I'm still not hype for Xenoblade Chronicles X because I don't find the characters appealing yet.

No lovable lead like Shulk, or goofy best friend like Reyn. From what I've seen, anyways.

Elma seems too cold to be likable. The girl with the short black hair kind of creeps me out. Don't know any other characters.

This and some of the concerns Ash raised are why I haven't been that excited. Mira and the mechs look incredible but I'm not sold on everything else just yet.

I guess I'm kinda okay with Skells. "Dolls" always confused me whenever I'd walk into a Xenoblade X thread, especially considering the faces of the characters LOL

With proper marketing, this would make a nice November release. Kind of scratches that Zelda itch. But emphasis on the phrase "with proper marketing." Because unlike Zelda, XCX doesn't have brand-name recognition to make it a hot holiday item.

I hope there is at least one track that is as amazing as the Gaur Plains theme

I skimmed through the OST samplers and didn't find one :-\

To be fair the sampler is focusing on the louder bits, and the vocal songs. The environment themes are amazing.

https://youtu.be/MHZlEKSU9Zs small cut of the White continent theme. Magically charming. You've heard the forest one, that sounds amazing too (and has a few different versions apparently).

https://youtu.be/hwVXpmrfPsY, main theme. There's also piano reprises of this, along with a vocal reprise (The song in the latest story trailer).

I brought up these same concerns on the previous page. They were assuaged somewhat by links to Japanese videos subbed into English, which showed the characters have strong personalities and a sense of humor.

So I'm more confident in the characters, although like you, I would personally prefer a defined lead like Shulk, over the create-a-character lead we're getting.

Still not sure what to think of the overall premise, or whether there will be a strong enough plot structure to maintain a sense of momentum. The world sure looks incredible, though.

There seem to be way more 'side stories', but the side stories also seem to be way more complex, detailed, significant and meaningful. The overall plot is going to be crazy too. Read the short stories yet? Fills in the premise with some background, and adds details, hinting at a deep plot again. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1NZO8F6qMK8cWr8LYhj4g4P7Quu-_jZadkQXyFBaLm6g/pub

I think we share the same thoughts on this one. I have no idea what to think about this game. Other than the battle system, it seems to have nothing in common with Xenoblade.

In fact it seems to be taking from my least favorite elements of Xenoblade, namely the big empty areas with bad sidequests.

The avatar character remains baffling to me. Horrible choice.

Just gonna have to see.

Customizable character obviously for online purposes. It's going to change the way the story will be told, along with the open world structure, but it's still going to be there.

You do know about the changes/improvments to questing right? RIGHT? Damn. I don't want to go off again... but here.... no I can't do it. Maybe I'll come back tomorrow after my exam and give an overview of the improvements to the questing. Or maybe someone can jump on it for me. Tag-team.

''I upgraded my Skell''
''Oh really? Which skill you mean?''
''No, my Skell.''
''Yeah, which one?''
''The giant mech, the Skell.''
''OH, the Skell, cool!''

Oh wow, that White Continent theme is great :-D

Yeah, I really like it too!

I actually don't mind the soundtrack as much as most people since I'm used to bombastic, anime scores and Sawano's stuff as well. I got used to the first Battle Theme after a few listens even with the rap. Then again, I'm very tolerant of most music and I like all genres, even if I have preferences.

Hmmm I just realized that in the Direct itself the woman described Sylvalum ("The Land of White Ash" for my Xenobros who've been following translations with me) as a "dry tundra" which seems to indicate that is more of a cold region rather than a second desert like a lot of others were saying.

Just thought of this: Black Tar has the line "Standing as long as we can, until we get all Dolls up."

Anyway of getting around that? Or just leave as is?

"Yeah, about the skells"
"I thought you called the skells swells"
"Well, skell does sound like swell"
"Makes my head swell"
"Yeah, you don't look well"

Tundra is frozen earth, and by appearances it looks both dry and cold.

People in New Zealand don't speak English, they speak Pseduo-Australian, and/or Elvish

Don't you mean Pseudo-Australian? Speaking as a New Zealander, though not born and bred here, it shouldn't be too much of a problem differentiating between skell and swell.

But of course, we've adopted Tolkien's form of Elvish as an unofficial language.

It's all swell.

Speaking of which, I wonder why they decided to call it "Sylvalum" since sylva means forest/woods and lum means "light." The name essentially means "forest of light." I suppose it does have auroras, but it doesn't quite evoke "forest."

Yes, you caught a rare Neiteio typo :(
