Man... I just don't know about
Xenoblade Chronicles X yet. I used to be excited for it, and I still want to be, but the more I learn and think about it the less happy I am with the direction they're taking this game in compared to the original.
The "create-an-avatar" main character, the lack of focus on the narrative and characters (compared to the original
XC), being based in reality, the so-edgy-I-could-cut-myself rap theme for normal battles... more and more, I'm thinking this game might just not be for me.
Any other fans of the original game possibly finding themselves in this camp? Note that I'm not trying to say "this game looks crappy" or that I don't understand why others are still hyped for it. It looks fantastic, it's just that it looks fantastic in several ways that don't appeal to me personally. It seems to be even more rooted in WRPG design philosophy than the original game was, but the original still had that all-important JRPG focus on a strong, linear story and characters.
Of course it's too early to say for sure, but I don't think my feeling this way is a coincidence. Even MonolithSoft has said they're intentionally focusing less on story and characters in
XCX compared to XC.
Thoughts?
These are the types of concerns we had when they initially announced that it's an open world RPG. It's definitley NOT too early to say, considering we've seen hours and hours of gameplay, hours of video presentations explaining the game, and tons of trailers etc showing off various aspects, enought to analyze the game and know tons about it. I have to ask, what have you been following in regards to the game so far?
Maybe you haven't been around the entire time, but let me address some of your concerns in brief. I think most of the Xenoblade fans who've been concerned have mostly started to be even more excited about this game, since it very honestly seems to be improving in virtually EVERY aspect you can think of. At worst, you should try the game and see, but even then, don't compare it to Xenoblade, play it for it's own merit and then weigh them against each other at the end. Don't deny yourself from enjoying the game just because you're expecting it to just be another Xenoblade.
Anyways, have you seen the infamous Famitsu review? They complained that there was TOO much story.
9 / An intricate and involved story, tough difficulty that will give you a solid challenge, and a system with high usability make this a wonderfully old-school RPG in the best sense of the term. The massive open world is crammed with countless stories, and giving them all their due takes time and hard work. The Dolls that you can pilot offer dynamic control, transformations and a rich variety of customization; enough to send any robo-head into a tizzy. Theres so much to do that it can be overwhelming at times, but it also feels very substantial.
8 / A massive title perfectly suited to the word epic. The vast game world is beautiful, with vistas changing come day or night, providing an endless source of excitement. The explanation of the world is handled with care, but movies break the action up again and again, slowing down the pacing, which is a bit of a shame. The tempo of the conversations could have done with being a bit faster, too. In terms of battle, its great that you can really go on the offensive once you have the system down. The enemies, Dolls and attacks launched from custom parts are all very appealing too.
8 / Theres zero stress in adventuring across the open world, which can be traversed seamlessly, and there are also many elements that take advantage of the size of the map, making moving around and exploring a lot of fun. Battle has a great tempo, combining an action game with command inputs, and is very strategic too. The story is told with care, and you want to find out what happens next, but it also gives you a strong feeling of just sitting there watching movies. Furthermore, a lot of details about the game system are left unexplained, leaving me with an impression of having to blindly stumble through things myself.
Lack of focus on characters? If anything, they are going way more in depth with each character, giving much more back story, delving further into characterization and devlopment than Xenoblade ever did. This short story highlights some of that:

Watch the Direct videos to get some examples of the humorous banter, the jokes between characters, etc. Here's a couple examples:

The game is definitely going for more of an open world design, and yeah that has certain implications, but it doesn't mean they are foresaking the JRPG elements we love. If anything, they seem to be taking JRPGs and advancing them, by taking some of the best elements of western design, mixing them all together with the best of both. It's definitely not going to be a LINEAR game, but there's nothing wrong with an 'open' game. 'open world' doesn't necessitate a weak story focus, even if most developers haven't been able to put them both together. This game looks to do that.
I don't think you're wrong having these concerns, in fact we've had these same concerns. But I think from everything they've shown you can be confident that although this game will have a different APPROACH, it'll be every bit as enjoyable, if not more than the first game. They'll be two distinct games, but they'll both be great, and they'll both be amazing in fact.
In regards to music, I wasn't too crazy about all the vocals, but everything else we've heard indicates some very on point instrumentals, awesome cutscene music, charming and unique area themes, tons of variety, even many of the vocal tracks are good, even if we don't necessarily ALL love every track. Maybe try listening to some of the other music in context to get a better feel for how good it is. (
