Igarashi Plays "Castlevania: Symphony of the Night" With Double Fine Devs

I feel I should note that Ben Judd works for DDM who does a lot of kickstarter consulting, especially for the bigger Japanese kickstarters.

I've never saw Igarashi before so I'm gonna ask if that is his actual appearance or is he's playing a rol/character of himself?

Yeah, IDK who Ben Judd is but guy seems such a bro. This was a great watch even if the girl playing was marking out hard at some points.

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Dude looks like Japanese Dracula, no wonder he made Castlevania.

The moment I saw Mr. Judd on screen I immediately turned up the volume to see if Mark, John, Hiroko, JJ, or Roy were there. I don't think I heard their voices at any point - though to be fair, I haven't finished watching what is a pretty amazing feature!

Great to see IGA looking healthy and happy, in some capacity, compared to the paucity of news we heard from him back when he had disappeared. It's also neat to hear how goofy he is in real life - definitely seems like someone that would be cool to hang out with and talk about what development was like back when he could still push out projects at Konami.

So man who had very little to do with making a game plays said game with other people who had nothing to do with afformentioned game? Ok.

He was one of about 10 people who ever worked on the game itself across three years, and was co-director towards the end (although he might have been loaned to another project in the middle of it and then returned for the final stretch, if I understood correctly). He programmed bits of it (mentioned specific parts in the video).

Or are you just doing the tired old "Iga took credit for all of SotN" troll that has to be in every Castlevania related thread?

I hope IGA carries around his usual attire when the Kickstarter begins.

This is pretty great. The trivia with the candle maintenance skeleton is gold.

I'm a little more than halfway through but it seems they're not bringing up the rumor that the project initially started out on the Sega 32X under the working title "The Bloodletting". Looks more like they might have been two separate projects though. Maybe some art assets were brought over to SotN like they did with Rondo since all 3 have the same kind of artstyle.

I am also really curious about the development of Harmony of Dissonance. There were some very loose rumors flying around at the time that this started out as a PS1 game. I can kinda half-believe it cause the graphics in that game sort of look like they were downported from higher quality assets and palette changed along the way to compensate for the GBA screen. The other two GBA games don't look anything like that.

Really great video so far. The Double Fine thing just confirms to me that the Kickstarter is real. They've gotten involved with promoting a couple of other game developers after theirs was such a huge success so this is really interesting.

That was amazing (I watched the entire video). I had no idea that Symphony of the Night was created by so few people (less than ten worked on it during most of the production); I always assumed it had been a much larger team.

Shame on the bosses of Konami for pushing IGA out instead of utilizing his talent.

watched the whole thing, was really good actually, great to see IGA have a go at the game himself too, also Skeleton Carpenter, I want that now XD

Toru Hagihara has a more important title, therefore IGA is a fraud who takes credit for other peoples' work. That's the entirety of the argument and yes, it's profoundly dumb.

Am i the only one who prefers Alucard's original English VO? The deep voice adds flavor to him not being a typical pretty boy.

I really liked the talk about the little extras the team added to levels. Simple animations that really didnt do much, but added so much to the atmosphere of the game. I always wondered what the point was regarding those animations, but always figured it was for atmosphere.

Great vid! Aside from SCIV which I love due to nostalgia and still play regularly, SOTN is my next favorite Castlevania game, and easily in my top 10 games.

EDIT: I also would have liked the skeletons relighting the candles. Could have just made it so that if you hit them they ran away, but not die. lol

The deep voice adds flavor to him not being a typical pretty boy.

I agree with this statement.

That was interesting. I agree that the repetition might not be ideal in terms of presentation, but I still enjoyed the wealth of background information he provided. He also seems pretty humble, and it's always nice to see a developer who is decent at playing his own games (when he finally takes the controller).

I loved the little details I never knew about the game, like the bugs on the trees.

I guess this also explains Juste's furniture 'sidequest' in Harmony of Dissonance very likely being a carryover idea from Symphony and Alucard's room. It seemed so out of place for Juste to be doing that.

I love Robert Belgrade, so yes. The actual text is cringeworthy sometimes, but I have no problems with the voice.

I rarely play JP versions but I remember that voice being rather... dull.

That's exactly what I love about it.

Too bad the PSP version plays the design archetype straight and cast Yuri Lowenthal. Nothing against him personally, but man, what a downgrade.

"Cult classic"?!

Did you think SOTN was actually a successful big selling game or something? Castlevanis sales popularity is highly frontloaded by NES hype and hasn't ever really done much. SOTN came out at a bad time a lot of people don't even know that game exists and they like Castlevania games.

Hah... just did a search for Igarashi and saw this pic come up:
ayami-michiru.jpg

He looks almost unrecognizable without his beard and long hair!

OMFG he looks a bit like kojima!

is there a team photo of konami members or something somewhere?

hideo and koji pretty much look bad ass.

That was a pretty fun watch. IGA is easily one of my favourite Japanese developers I'm glad everything IGA said was subtitled, as Ben Judd's quick translation was a bit off sometimes. It makes it a bit weird to watch with there being 2 translations twice, but well, it's understandable considering how it was recorded.

People shit on DF -- rightfully so; but, little things like Devs Play and their documentaries really make the world a better place.

Very well produced and a lot of insight.

Edit: I shouldn't say world -- more like "makes being into games a good thing." Geeky things for geeks to really get into.

Good video, but they should have cut out ben translating what iga said to anna given it was such a long video. Didn't really need to go through everything twice time after time.

The voice itself is cool, but the acting is absolutely terrible, lol. Especially in the nightmare when he's trying to show emotion, omg... xD I mean sure the terrible dialogue doesn't help, but yeah, he's bad.

The funny thing about those trolls is that SOTN is arguably the Castlevania which IGA was most directly involved with, taking the helm as director during the latter half of the project and actually being hands-on with the game as a programmer (plus being the scenario writer). In all of his later games he would do little more than act as the producer, which means more involvement with the business side of things and less with the actual development of the games.

what's GEMA?

An association that makes sure that artists get paid when their work is used. In principal, it is a very good idea. But for years now Google and Gema cannot get to an agreement on payment for music in youtube videos. That's why many youtube videos are blocked in Germany when it contains non-free music.

This is really enjoyable, lots of great insights, like Alucard originally having his own room, and yelling 'NOOOO' when Death took his stuff, until Igarashi vetoed it for being stupid.

Igarashi giving her hints is great, too.

The fact that it was Michiru Yamane's sister who did the vocals for the File Select screen in SOTN blew my mind.
