RPS: The 50 Best FPS Ever Made

Wow.... No mention of Tribes 1 and 2, and Tribes Ascend makes the list? Come on... Also, Planetside 2 has no business around the other stuff in the top 10.

Yeah...Tribes 2 was/is a masterpiece. It's too bad no one is capitalizing on that idea. You could make a lot of money, especially if you made it free to play with only aesthetic dlc.

I probably haven't played a shooter better than Tribes 2 at this point. You had huge worlds, vehicles, skill, bases, customization, rock music. There was nothing the game couldn't do.

Doom is in no way the best fps (PC or otherwise) ever made. Don't get me wrong it's a quality shooter but if it's still the greatest of the genre after all these years the industry has failed.

Bioshock over System Shock? You're dead me to me RPS. DEAD I SAY.

I think they did better with their strategy list.

The list was obviously made based on the time it was released. Obviously a lot of these games don't hold up as well today. DOOM is by far the most influential shooter of all time, in fact I don't even think the term FPS existed, it was 'doom clone' back then.

Far Cry 2 higher than Crysis.

While ambitiious in its own right, did anyone actually enjoy shooting and playing Far Cry 2? Really?

DOom being at spot 1 doesn't bother me at all.

I read the article but I still don't get how Thief counts as an FPS but Portal doesn't. I wish they included some of these borderline games just to see how they rank.

I can see why someone would rate Bioshock 2 ahead of the other Bioshock games. I do feel it's the strongest in the gameplay department, even though I still think Bioshock and Infinite are better games overall. So with a high weight on gameplay, you could justify it.

#12 first-person game of all-time, however? (since the list doesn't seem to be restricted to shooters-only) I can't say I can agree with that at all.

Speaking of Tribes, anyone know if it's worth downloading Tribes Ascend? Is anyone still playing?

I recently replayed this game. THe multiplayer is balls to the walls awesome, but the single player is so early 2000s (underwater level, turret sequence after turret sequence, corridor, enemies that just stand still).

I was thinking multiplayer specifically. Didn't really play the garbage SP lol

It is still the best and the industry has indeed failed to outdo it.

What a horrible list. Call of Juarez on there, no Halo 2. CS GO above CS 1.6 and CSS. Considering how important Halo was to console FPS, it should be in the top 5.

DOOM is only on top for nostalgia purposes. It doesn't hold its weight any more. Yes it was important in the history, but it is not the greatest FPS ever made. Much like the Wright Bros airplane is not the greatest airplane ever made.

COD 2 over 4?

Someone should make a GAF poll and spreadsheet to poll GAF's top 50 FPS games and see how it is different.

People saying DOOM is unplayable? That's just about the biggest gaming blasphemy I've ever heard. Not only is it playable, it's my favorite FPS of all time and I still play it on a weekly basis. AND I didn't even play the PC version until like 2010. It's amazing. Super fun, timeless game. I don't let gaming opinions upset me as a rule, but I'd be lying if i said my blood pressure didn't rise at some of these statements.

Comparing its playability to Goldeneye? I hope thy shall be smote!

Fuck yo list, if the greatest FPS of all time isn't on the #1 Spot (or at all) it's not a good list

Some stuff in there (like Thief and Dishonored) that I don't know I'd call "FPS" games, precisely. First person, yes, shooters... not so much.

Wasn't their RTS list similarly scattershot with a bunch of games nobody wants to play in 2015 and a few that aren't even strategy games?

Well their most recent strategy game list had both RTS and TBS. The ranking was kinda iffy but you're never going to please everybody in regards to ranking anyways. There was also some glaring omissions from the RTS side but it was mostly better at being a canon than this list.

The lack of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault on this list is sad. Such a great game.

I'm quite annoyed with why Descent is on there though. That game was more sim than shooter, built around the 6DOF idea. I played the crap out of it with a joystick, not a mouse and keyboard. I wouldn't call that an FPS at all.

Halo CE is way too low.
Maybe. The oXbox version is still amazing to play. Its design is arguably not perfectly suited to M&K though, and outside of framerate and resolution, all of Halo 1's ports have significant aesthetic issues. I can definitely understand a PC gamer not being impressed with it.

Am I the only one who thinks Doom doesn't hold up? I mean it was good at the time, but I'm not seeing how someone can think it's the top FPS ever made.
I've never played it with a mouse, but I experienced Doom for the first time (on 360) a few years ago and I thought it was phenomenal.

It's a PC list so Halo being important to consoles holds no weight. I do agree that it should be higher.

Halo 2 for Vista was a blemish on PC and at the peak of the era when PC ports were an afterthought, should not be on the list based on that alone.

DOOM is still incredibly playable, and none of the games on that list would be there if it wasn't for it.

Pretty good list but terrible order. Games like TF2 and Wolf ET are near the bottom. Some really key FPSes are completely missing.

Actually it's a pretty crappy list.
