Hellblade (Ninja Theory, PS4/PC, UE4) - Gameplay Trailer

Crossing Eden

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
Why ignore them? They are happily atrocious as well, featuring miserable writing, comically awful character archetypes (Enslaved's WOMAN SMART AND AGILE, MAN STRONG BUT DUMB) and all the plot nuance of a shotgun blast to the face.

I know, I know. The altar is getting a little dusty, let me not disturb it.
Both were quite good stories, especially at the time of release compared to their peers. Yes it's man strong and woman good, but the characters are both well realized and both actors had fantastic chemistry and made them feel like actual people. It was astounding really.
Let's not talk about that ending tho.

Oh I dunno, I think they've done a good job of depicting Trip and Monkey as being equal. It's very obvious that each one of them can't survive without the other after all.

EDIT: Combat looks to follow the same vein as... I don't know, other western fantasy like TES? In terms of the 'feel' of it anyway. The idea of psychology horror being a main component of the game has potential but don't expect Silent Hill's style of subtlety if their work on DmC was anything to go by *cougheavyhandedcough*

dev diary was pretty hawt. there looks to be some subtlety to the graphics that i can appreciate, with alot of games recently being hella busy in their art. im liking the voices in her head angle and curious to see where they go with it. i continue to be interested in the project i guess :D

I don't think people are claiming that DmC isn't satire, they're claiming that it's pretty crappy satire.

Anyhow, this game's basic combat framework looks neat and quite differentiated from other stuff out there, which makes me curious to see more even if the execution of the ideas doesn't work out perfectly.

I'm not particularly convinced, I don't like the dark, dirty atmosphere they're going with. I'll still keep my eye on it though as I like NT.

It seems like "entering Ninja Theory threads to trash Ninja Theory even though I am not really interested in them" is becoming a hobby for so many people in GAF right now.

The only good looking character NT has ever made is Trip from Enslaved .
Of all the 3rd party studios, I have never looked at a NT design and thought, "Wow, that looks terrible." Their characters always stand out, more so than so many other studios.
I think the only design i wasn't a fan of was Lilith from DmC, and that was mostly because of how they modeled her.

Not to mention that ND is consistently praised for female characters. But let's not forget what female characters were featured in their previous games.

Coincidentally this one shares the same name with one of their recent characters.

So yea, the people bringing up DmC as the extent of NT's writing talent, (while simultaneously ignoring heavenly sword and enslaved odyssey to the west) really need to stop.

I am so bored of this horrible "argument" about women in games being by definition vacuous and offensive if they are portrayed as attractive or in any way sexual.

How many male protagonists are short, skinny and ugly?

If we're going to be blinkered and puritanical and deny human sexuality, at least do it to both genders equally.

brb traveling to Rome and Athens to destroy every ancient statue of a muscular male or attractive female so you can rest easy.

Alright. I'll be here when you get back.

Dude, I'm literally the post above you. The one with six freakin' huge animated GIFs of gameplay.

If you're gonna call something a gameplay trailer then more than half the trailer should be gameplay.

And no, "walking through a forest" and "sweeping view of a vista" isn't gameplay

Ok first of all, neither of those characters are particularly good, let alone great female protagonists. I mean I like the Jak series but let's be honest, it's very tryhard and a result of the era where everything tried to e edgy and dark. Literally the only reason that Tess is there is so that Daxter could have a love interest. Sure in the third game she becomes the weapons supplier but that still doesn't help the fact that she's a dumb blonde who fell for an animal because he told her lies. Puritanical, yes, rejecting those ridiculous balloons for breasts is puritanical.

There's literally only one gif of a panning view of a vista. There rest are combat snippets and exploration, which is the majority of the gameplay in Hellblade, exploration and combat are the big focus.

I wasn't aware we were imposing arbitrary limits on what constitutes a gameplay trailer. I mean, more is always nice, but there's plenty in the one they delivered for a game this early in development.

If a key part of your game is exploration (which I understand is the case in Hellblade) it is.

We gotta hold devs to some level of standard

They were also talking about "Ninja-Class Combat", so yeah showing some extensive shots of combat would be wise

I still can't get over that "through the frame of mental illness" title card they show halfway through the trailer.

I mean, who thought that would be a selling point? A big PR message to slather on a game's first trailer?

Totally great job that the game has a theme of mental health, but why not leave it up to the players to discover this?

After DmC, let's just say Ninja Theory isn't exactly known for being subtle.

I've been fully intending on buying DmC at some point down the road. Now I'm... slightly less inclined to do so.

It's still good, though, right? I enjoyed Enslaved but I didn't think it was great or a classic by any means.

I think the issue was just that their choice of words was so clunky. I mean, why not say something like "Through the lens of a troubled mind..."? Saying "mental illness" just seems clinical and blunt, and it clashes with the gritty distant-past vibe they're going for.

DmC is a great game. Chaos2Frozen isn't wrong, but the lack of subtlety is actually a strength in the case of that particular game IMO. It's a very deliberately melodramatic, over-the-top kinda game.

My first thought also. It's as if they just couldn't help themselves; they simply had to get this out there as soon as possible so we can all begin talking about how "brave" and "unique" their vision is. And I guess they don't exactly trust/respect us enough to find out on our own either. Well, NT, you dun goofed, because now that I know of your special theme, I've honestly lost all interest.

As for how it looks as a game? The camera positioning seems awful and the combat, stilted and janky. It looks like an on-rails motion controller fighter masquerading as something more. Here's hoping it turns out a lot better than what this trailer lets on.

Also thought this, and that it looks mighty bad on the graphical front for being made on UE4.

Tip: If you are so bored about one of the most valid arguments presented in discussions about the portrayal of women, you can always avoid engaging in said discussions. It's true that the portrayal of men is far from the ideal, but that doesn't invalidate the argument that overly sexualized characters are poor portrayal of women in fiction.

Senua having a mental illness and us seeing the world through her eyes isn't a twist or spoiler, it's the premise. It would be like saying "Oh why did they tell us that Limbo is an alternate world in DmC, they should've let us find that out on her own." Now finding out the reasons for her current condition would be a spoiler.

I really don't think his issue is with spoilers, but more with the wording of the tagline itself and how unsubtle it is in a bit of a "look at us; we're tackling the big issues in a video game" way. That's how I took it, anyway.

Yeah but imagine if silent hill or spec ops the line straight up tell you your character has issues, the whole game would have lost its one edge- it's a mis opportunity imo.

I think it looks good. Mental illness is a sensitive subject though, especially for me. So I hope they handle it with dignity.

I really enjoyed Enslaved, but the other NT games not so much. So I hope it's more like that.

Yea but in those games it's the twist instead of the premise. Especially in spec ops. I'm sure they still have a lot to say with the story.

I think there's great potential for a game to explore mental illness in a way that no other medium can... Unfortunately,I don't think a violent action game where you play as a "badass" warrior is the right vehicle for that.

Why is NT so afraid of making something completely new? I was under the impression that Heavenly Sword was a bit of a flop, so why are they going back to the same well?

I'm not sure what people expect from a game made with 12 people...
I think the effects like the rain and fire look gorgeous. Forest segment looks awesome as well with the lightning briefly lighting up the scene.

Graphically it looks really good to me, I'm just a little bit sad about the fur downgrade. :(

DmC is one of my favourite games of last (and this!) gen so needless to say they have my attention. Do we know if it's largely the same people working on this one?

Judging by their developer diary a few weeks back combat wasn't coming along as they hoped and Sony invited them to judges week. With that time crunch I'm not surprised they squeezed out a trailer so light on gameplay as they probably just wanted to have something to market the game with during E3 season.

That said, I'm still intrigued by Hell Blade. I like the art direction, and the story could be quite interesting if handled properly. But if combat is a gameplay pillar there needs to come a point when it is showcased. They did the game a disservice by calling this a gameplay trailer.
