at last, for christ's sake
you could eye the Movies thread, there's a good chunk of competent moviegoers you can trust. Myself, in particular

kidding aside, read The Guardian's. They're actually very good at reviewing movies, and games too

I'll PM you a link when it is published on Friday. Personal service! ;)
Fair enough, I'll give it a read!

I'm not against the idea of reading Gaffers reviews, it's just harder to keep track of than having a dedicated critic that I can stick in my RSS reader.

I'll check the Guardian though!

Those numbers look close, will be interesting to see the box office results this weekend. If Minions is as bad as reviews make it out to be, could be looking at a slightly bigger drop.

However, I'm hoping it holds, will make the box office thread more entertaining. :)

I just saw Minions today. Terrible Movie.

My brother in law took my niece to see it on Sunday, and he texted me while I was re-caulking my tub. He said it was one of the worst movies he had ever seen. When I told him I was recaulking my tub, he told me I had gotten the better deal.

Yeah - I mean I'm sure I'll like it. I just want it to be a success so that Marvel feels safe making films on smaller, unknown properties.

Did your niece like it though?

Minions wasn't bad, it was just empty. It didn't offend my sensibilities, although I only paid $6 for a ticket

Crazy hyped for this this weekend though

Can't wait to see the movie. This is the first movie that I have ever reserved a seat for. Does any know how it works? Do they escort you to your assigned seat or mark them with anything in case someone gets there sooner and tries sits in them?

Just came back from a screening tonight, and wow. The theater wasn't full like the GotG screening I went to last year, but it was a good number and the entire audience loved it.

The Michaels rock. Michael Douglas is great and yes, you only afterwards have to remind yourself that they had to digitally rejuvenate Douglas' face for the opening sequence, it's that good. The best de-aging ever done in a movie.

And Michael Peña is hilarious. Not 100% of the jokes land in the movie, but that still leaves a ton of laughs in the theater.

The ants rock, and they play a MUCH larger part that I expected or what the trailers showed. The "heist movie" aspect is indeed good, and not just "for a Marvel movie good."

Yes, the
Ant-Man team (Hope, Hank and Scott) infiltrate the new Avengers facility in upstate New York and run into Falcon, who is able to detect Ant-Man thanks to his new high-tech visor. Great fight ensues, although it does feel like that sequence was placed there in order to comply with the MCU continuity.

And the f
lashback about what happens to The Wasp is heartbreaking but cool in that, it really makes you want to see a prequel with Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne's adventures. They seemed to be kicking ass back in their days as SHIELD's top superheroes and quasi-Avengers.

Overall on the favorite MCU movie scale:

GoTG
CA: TWS
Avengers/Ant-Man
Iron Man
AoU
Iron-Man 2
Cap 1
Thor 1
Iron Man 3
Hulk
Thor 2

Ignore the order of the bottom 6 or 7, pretty much they're all the same to me.

Just got back from it.

It's ok. There's a lot wrong with it overall plot wise but there's enough fun and good bits it doesn't really matter.

I had fun with it anyway.

Went to a Marvel screening last night in NYC. Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas stopped by to introduce the film and high-fived a bunch of fans in the packed theater.

The movie was such a blast, especially with a cheering and engaged crowd. Roeper's review is nonsense. The ants were lovable, and I thought the movie knew exactly what it wanted to be. It's light-hearted, it's fun, it's goofy, and the actions scenes were great. They handled the shrinking and re-sizing brilliantly for the most part. Paul Rudd is incredibly charming; Michael Peña is hilarious; Evangeline, Michael Douglas, and Corey Stoll all had solid performances. If you've enjoyed more than one MCU movie, you'll definitely enjoy this one.

no way minions is beating a marvel movie opening weekend

it'll be really close, but I think ant man will take it.
I wouldn't underestimate the appeal of the Minions. They've basically become pop culture icons in the last few years. Though I do agree that it will be close, mainly because we all know about how big the MCU is. Still, I did my part with my IMAX 3D tickets.

Never fucking underestimate kids movies. In fact, that's why marvel films do so well, they get some of that slightly older kid audience. I think that had a slight hand in Jurassic World too.

This. Remember, Big Hero 6 did beat Interstellar on opening weekend. While granted, it had some of the Marvel hype under its sail, Disney opted to downplay the Marvel aspect for whatever reason until the home stretch (they only mentioned the Marvel connection in ads attached to comic book shows or movies).

Just got back from seeing it. It's a pretty fun marvel heist flick, whilst at the same time having some really nice tender moments. The action was great. They used the Shrinking ability to great affect in the fights. Made for some really inventive and funny fight sequences.
Paul Rudd did a pretty good job as the Ant Man in this. The Ants were also pretty cute and they did a good job in making me become attached to them.
Was a lot of fun seeing them help with the main heist.
I'll also join in with the above in saying that Michael Peña was way more funnier than I was expecting. He had some of the funniest scenes in the film along with the
"wombats"
of course heh.
The villain was so so. Nothing really outstanding there, though Corey Stoll did a decent job with what he was given.
If you want to see a fun Marvel heist movie with a pinch of heart, this is the film for you.

Just curious, is it worth it to see it in IMAX? I imagine the shrinking scenes would look awesome, but I'm not crazy about spending 20 bucks.

Minions is like one of those bad Adam Sandler movies. Seriously, everytime the thing opens its mouth all the kids in the cinema laughing.

Ant-Man projected to make $115-125 million globally, but will finish second to Minions this weekend.

Another reason to hate those little yellow buggers.

That seems like excellent numbers - hope this is able to pull in a good half billion or more at the Box Office. It's going to get hammered by Minions though - even Despicable Me 2 did nearly a billion, and the marketing for Minions is already everywhere (here in the UK).

This might be as good a place as any to ask, but whose movie reviews do y'all read? I look at the RT numbers, but I'm never sure which reviews to actually read.

On YouTube I really like:

Jeremy Jahns for the casual filmgoer's perspective
Mark Kermode for the professional critic angle
YourMovieSucks for the pretentious arty film lover
RedLetterMedia for fucking hilarious and completely over-cynical longform reviews

EDIT - sorry, I see you're asking for reviews to read. I honestly don't know any to recommend.

A friend of mine is mad about minions because they're retconning some of the lore

On topic, seeing this tomorrow with the wife. Excited as heck. Hope it does well and marvel feels good about movies that don't have the world at stake

does Ant-man have the ability to get really big too, or can he only shrink?

Seeing it in a few hours. Cautiously optimistic. I'm not expecting anything great, but I'm anticipating lots fun fun regardless.
