Day of the Tentacle: SE will be shown at Indiecade tomorrow

About the verb interface... if removing it enables the aspect-ratio correct HD backgrounds to fill the screen then I'm all for it. It'd be better if this was toggle-able too.

I had no idea this was the thing. Awesome timing too since I've just recently beaten the Monkey Island SEs.

Should I play Maniac Mansion first?

You don't *need* to play MM, but it's a fantastic game and it's probably going to be a while till DOTT:SE comes out.

Just be aware if you play it that - as it is a pre-SOMI game - it's possible to do things that make the game impossible to complete.

So do consult a guide if you find yourself stuck as you may have unwittingly snookered yourself.

Can't wait. I expect the reaction to be more or less the same as it was to Grim, though, it's just not going to be a friendly game for people who didn't play stuff like this Back In The Day. (It'd be nice if they added in a subtle hint system for newcomers but I suppose thst isn't likely.)

I dunno, I think people will find it easier then GRIM. While DOTT has more locations to act on simultaneously, as well as more puzzles (and more elaborate ones), they're (generally) pretty logical, and you don't have to worry about position like you do in GRIM sometimes (beavers etc). It's a harder game in theory but in practice I think it'd take less time to clear

I remember them saying that they had decided to not use that.

DF said in September that it will have new, high resolution art in the original style, and that none of the cancelled remake art assets will be used. Original art will also be available.

The thing I'm really worried about is the UI. I really hope they keep the scumm interface for the special edition, because every attempt I've seen to supplant it (including Schafer's own in Full Throttle, Grim Fandango & Broken Age) has been inferior.

Now I wonder what the cancelled remake looked like :p

This is definitely much more work than Grim Fandango then.

Was there really much of a danger of that happening? I guess it can seem that way until you discover the way out of the dungeon, but the only way I can recall to possibly make the game uncompleteable is
to drown two characters in the pool
, and that's pretty late in the game, requires a fair bit of effort, and the game makes it pretty obvious what you've done.

If you are lucky maybe the game still have the original maniac mansion in one of of the computers haha.

My main concern with this project is the method of animation. The original was all hand-drawn but I suspect the "remaster" will be digitally animated, which provides stiffer, less fluid movement IMO.

from memory

-let Ed collect his package (depending on who you chose this will deadend you)
-open the undelevoped film (will deadend micheal's route)
-wasting the paint remover (deadends everyone I think, that was the route to the door code)
-wasting your money (making you unable to use the telescope)
-calling the police multiple times without having the door open makes them ignore you (deadends bernard route)

There are defo lots more too, but those are the ones I remember. There are also other ways to kill kids (try
giving ed his dead hamster lol
), but those don't really count as you know you screwed up and can return to a previous save game. The ones where you DON'T know are infinitely worse and the reason behind SOMI being so different.

I wish Gilbert had kept more deaths in his later games though, those were always entertaining and you could easily roll back (or have the game put you back).

Looks pretty much perfect as far as you can tell from that shot. As close to the original as you can get. Full screen play screen as well.

I hope we'll get a trailer or a gameplay video - really curious to see how the animation turned out.

If only the Monkey Island remakes looked that good.

Yeah, they really deserved better. They outsourced most of the art to a cheap studio in South-Korea, and you could tell. Luckily Double Fine has plenty of talented artists/animators inhouse.

Really loving that screenshot, now if only they get the animation right this will be as good as it gets.

Never played the original but I played Grim Fandango (remastered) for the first time this year too and absolutely loved it. Looking forward to finally seeing this.

I approve this comment.

have we heard any news on controls (i.e. is it just going to be straight up point and click with the same scumm interface taking up screen real estate)?

That looks just like my childhood!

Wow, looks better than expected. Thought this was just going to be a straight port. I wonder if they got assets from the cancelled SE version by LucasArts.

I really wonder when the release date for this is. I'd love to play this around Christmas time, but I assume it's not gonna happen. Probably sometime around next spring.

Looks great, but as said we need to see it in motion.

From that screenshot it sadly doesn't seem like we'll have the scumm verb interface - you can see the word "field" on its own. If it was using the verb interface, you'd see "walk to field". Unless it pulls up from the bottom on button press or on mouse movement to the bottom edge.

Is anyone here going to Indiecade? My wife and I are making our annual visit tomorrow (we live in LA so it's not much of a trip).

Last year's show was the first time Grim Fandango was playable to the public, and it came out only a few months later. So I hope that's the kind of schedule we're looking at for DotT.

I only want this and a remaster of Toonstruck with all the missing content!
Those two games defined my gaming tastes!

Graphics are top-notch, they chose what to do with them perfectly.

Not having the SCUMM action buttons makes a lot of sense, especially for people who never played the game before, I do hope that they have the option to use it though.

I think it'll be similar to how it was handled in the Monkey Special editions, with the verb bar being there in classic mode, and the new mode having a verb 'coin' (think Monkey 3, or Full Throttle) with all the actions with unique responses when holding the mouse button.

I honestly prefer it that way. Easy to use and it just looks a lot better when the entire screen is filled with pretty art. I think the verb bar was phased out of those games for a reason really. Not that much easier to use.

An option to turn it on would please everyone of course.

I hope they re-recorded the dialog along with that amazing art style.

They haven't (thankfully, those original voices are what the characters should sound like). They have found the original sound files which means they'll be of a higher quality now though.

They also rerecorded (parts of) the soundtrack with actual instruments, and hopefully they used the Sydney orchestra again for the main theme and some other big pieces, just like with Grim.

Junior, please.

Should I play Maniac Mansion first?

Don't blame you, it was announced and then disappeared for like a year.

And no, don't bother with MM, just dive in with DOTT. As point and clicks go it hardly gets more primitive and it's not needed to enjoy DOTT. There's a couple of character references, but it won't matter one bit.

Also Maniac Mansion is playable from a pc you can find in DOTT. It's possible Double Fine wasn't allowed to keep that in for rights reasons or something, but I doubt it.

I don't think they actually remade the entirety of Maniac Mansion though - that would be like remaking two entire games. Also not necessary I think.
