Mario Maker Update Next Week to Include Checkpoints and Event Courses

These changes are mostly uninteresting to me, but if nothing else, it's encouraging to know they're still doing stuff to the game. Hopefully that means they'll eventually make larger changes, such as adding Super Mario Bros. 2.

Will checkpoints extend the length of courses or are people happy because it'll allow you to get further in really difficult stages and not want to quit? I don't have this but I was just wondering why people are so crazy happy to see them.

Spend five minutes on a course.

Die 90% through the level.

lol start at the beginning.

Most of my levels have a 10-15% clear rate and I'm not even making absurdly hard courses. Every single one of my stages would benefit from a checkpoint.

Some levels absolutely need them. They are often too long and too hard (not sexual in any way) to beat (ugh). People can lose interest in a level if it seems unbeatable. I know, because I did.

You're going to be waiting a very, very long time.

just got the game but it seems like ill be playing for a while, checkpoints will basically completely change the game. Did they say how many per level?

One obviously, 2D Mario games never had more if I'm not mistaken.

Actually, it's two. Confirmed to be two.

https://www.nintendo.co.uk/News/2015/October/New-software-update-for-Super-Mario-Maker-on-Wii-U-will-bring-mid-level-checkpoints-and-new-courses-1063172.html

With the addition of mid-level checkpoints, users now have the option to add up to two flags to their courses, allowing players to resume from the furthest checkpoint passed if they lose a life – rather than having to start over at the beginning of the course.

Without checkpoints is really hard to enjoy the longest (and most difficult) stages. Usually, these levels become frustrating so most of the players would skip them. With checkpoints it's gonna be easier to have fun on those kind of levels.

This is why patches are amazing. In previous gens, we would have to wait for the next game for improvements like this, but now they can still target their release date and not have to many feature cuts as they can just be added in a patch!

I was thinking about selling my copy last week because I wasn't having fun playing or making gauntlet stages. This changes everything! :D

Aww man, looks like I'll be taking down a few of my levels to add some checkpoints. Definitely have a couple harder levels that would benefit greatly from a checkpoint or two.

My only complaint is I wish I wasn't going to lose all my stats for my level by doing that.

the Checkpoints are a great addition for everyone, but for me, that I'm not a great fun of creating levels, these are AMAZING NEWS:

"
The software update also introduces Event Courses in the game’s Course World online hub. Event Courses will feature levels from partner creators outside Nintendo.
New Event Courses will be added to the listing on an ongoing basis, some of which may even feature new Mystery Mushroom transformations. Additionally, a new Official Makers section in Course World will be added after downloading the update, featuring specially selected courses, including some created by Nintendo.
"

Holy shit I never thought we'd actually get this. Is there anything else missing that would make this game perfect at this point? I guess better online curation, but baby steps.

I agree, personally I left the game after finding it too difficult to search for decent levels.

Honestly I don't see them adding hills plus to me they are mostly cosmetic, woldn't really add to the gameplay, at least not as much as other elements.

Hills would be fun to slide down, but I don't see them as essential either. Lack of checkpoints was really holding the game back. It made more challenging and long levels a lot less fun.

I still expect most troll levels will have zero checkpoints or both checkpoints at the start of the level.

But the possibility of checkpoints and levels using them well is exciting.

Well even if you're not much of a maker, this should make the levels of others more bearable.

Also, official and event levels should at least provide a safe haven from the auto levels.

The checkpoints and curated levels basically address two of my biggest issues with the game so this is a great update.

All I can think of that I still want is a way to "tag" levels.

Just in time to wrap up Woolly World as well!

This is glorious. Now we just need some kind of world-map builder, a better search system, and a way to purge automatic levels from the system and Mario Maker is better!

Yeah, so I am rushing through the last of Expert stages for the final few costumes I need now :p

Not going to happen at this point. Would require tons of new sprite animations for not just every Mario, but every Costume Mushroom variant would need a new sliding sprite.

They could just make the costumes use their crouch animation while sliding. SMB3, SMW and NSMBU already have sliding animations, so they'd only have to make SMB.

Or just no have SMB Mario have a special sliding animation and just have him crouch as well. SMB is missing a running animation unlike the other styles, so it's not like SMB not having all the same animations is unheard of.

even in recent memory, patches are used just to fix bugs, while it's nice to see things fixed, this is better since the game has few to none bugs and instead of fixing things, they add more things

This is awesome. I enjoyed Mario Maker a lot but I kind of fell off it for a while. Definitely stoked for this new update. I'm looking forward to see what else they add in the future.

Checkpoints and conditional powerups really do feel like a game changer, especially in making levels more manageable to make/play + replicating the way older Mario games worked with powerups.
