NPD Sales Results for October 2015 [Up1: Xbox #1]

Frankly the consoles weren't even that bad for October. They just seem weak because Halo and the $50 cut BUT

1. As we can see Halo is nowhere near the console mover it used to be

And

2. PS4 sales are likely being funneled into the COD and Battlefront bundles

November really is a very important month for these machines

We know the baseline for digital sales for Halo 5 worldwide. MS said Halo 5 was the new best selling digital title on week one. Previously Minecraft held that title at 1,000,000 units. Using revenue as "best selling" Halo 5 is looking at 275,000 to 300,000. Using units, it is 1,000,000, but that is impossible.

not this fucking shit again already been proven wrong by multiple members

How much should they have won by?

October =/= November or December. That alongside the PS4 doing well in US and having its first price drop pretty much meant that things were going to be close in my opinion (no more than a 50K gap).

The Xbox 360 got the #1 spot by only 27K during the month Halo 3 launched (September 2007). Was that a technical lose too?

no , because halo sold over 3 million copies

I agree but just to add: in order for theory #2 to be correct regarding the delayed effect of the price drop, we'll have to see a substantial spike in PS4 sales in Novembers NPD. I'm talking about > 500K hardware sales.

What does that have to do with someone simply stating who won by consoles sold though? That's what I don't get. Halo 5 not doing similar to Halo 3 meant more opportunity for the PS4 to take the month -- especially with a price drop don't you agree?

Oh really? How? And you seem like a real fucking cunt.

Whoa -- no need for name calling. Wow.

i didn't really expect the price drop to do anything for October because almost everyone would be waiting for black Friday and all the bundles.

If we are talking about moving consoles it did poorly. Look at what Destiny did for PS4 last September. I think it pretty safe to say when Uncharted 4 comes out in March Sony will sell more consoles than what Microsoft and Halo did in October.

Too soon to say in my opinion. A decent number of people who are looking forward to Uncharted 4 will already have the system -- especially considering its releasing not that far away from the Holiday season (a few months). Sales will (or at least should) be definitely higher than February though.

They did? So no Halo fans held back due to the collection's major issues or simply due to the fact the collection had old games?

I guess we won't see a PS4 sales boost in Spring 2016 then.

Everyone who likes Uncharted should have a PS4 by Christmas!

Because it's obviously trying to downplay impact and it cuts out a large portion of 360 owners (as well as PS4 owners for that matter) who are waiting for Halo 5 to buy an XB1 as that game will be a main push for them.

People assuming that game series will have sequels on new consoles helps the sales of consoles but there's still many who wait for games to release to buy consoles. We are talking about $300+ consoles that still don't have huge game libraries yet. Why buy a console for a possible future game when I can wait to see how the game looks, make a decision then, and then end up more than likely buying the console at a cheaper price due to it being a bit older at the time?

I would say that it works both ways as I could see a decent number of PS4 owners getting an Xbox One for Halo 5. #ItShouldBeInteresting.
in other words i will argue with people that say halo lovers likely already own xb1 saying there are a lot of ps4 owners, current gen owners that will get an xb1 for ps4

BUT BUT BUT

if someone says uncharted 4 will sell more consoles in march i will use the argument that uncharted lovers will likely own the system and i won't say things like xb1 owners will get a ps4 for uncharted 4 or current gen owners will upgrade

BUT BUT BUT

i am not saying they wont move any consoles yea there will be some people that will upgrade......

i hope people looking at your past posts realize how silly and vague some of your predictions are. i mean at this point you might as well make a BOLD prediction like

"Consoles will sell this holiday!! some will be for halo 5,some will be for cod, some will be for battlefront...."

Not sure why you quoted me saying the PS3 almost doubled the Xbox 360's sales during the month that MGS4 released either -- I wasn't suggesting that the exact same thing would happen last month for Xbox One vs. PS4. I was simply posting a fact in reply to someone else.

And that's all I said. I obviously don't know exactly how many but I wouldn't be surprised if it helps in a similar fashion to how MGS4 helped previously 360-only owners get a PS3 during its launch month.

Yep, I agree. I think Halo 5 will help push some PS4 owners to get an Xbox One as a secondary "exclusive box".

True but (at least as of right now), I think the Xbox One will get October due to Halo 5 and a possibly solid number of PS4 owners getting an Xbox One that month for the game; Similar to what we saw last gen with the PS3 and MGS4 (PS3 won that month).

i know you are going to hang your hat around the word "similar" but w.e

Well ms I'm sure would like to make a dent in that marketshare gap and halo should have been a nice driver of that. Unless they can pull more off in Nov. Dec, it's a bit surprising.

MS deserves the views. It's not often they win the NPD. Let them have this.
Uhm...I'm willing to wager most of those views are for the Halo 5 sales discussion, and XBO sales not exactly getting the boost most expected from a new mainline Halo release :/

If that was true then Sony would cut the price in november. They wanted a effect in october too, but response was disappointing.
My response = what unapersson said, basically.

You know perfectly well that 360 was facing the Wii in its prime during that month.

Sales were 528k 360s vs 119k PS3s back in September 2007. August 2007 (Madden + Bioshock + price drop) was 277k 360 vs 130k PS3. July 2007 (no big games) was 170k 360 vs 159k PS3.

I can say this: I literally just got off the phone with my local GameStop. They're completely sold out of the special edition BF PS4 nationally. As in not one store will take a preorder or have one available if you DIDNT preorder. Same situation at Best Buy. Sold out nationwide online and for store pickup. Walmart will take an order, but you won't get it until the following week due to demand.

November is gonna be BONKERS.

They certainly aren't happy.
They didn't make any dent in the PS4 installed base lead with their biggest first party IP meaning that it's not going to get better with other much smaller first party exclusives.
Also sales of Halo 5 are really disappointing compared to the past and they counted on those for their profits.
MS results aren't perceived as terrible only because the PS4 sales were surprisingly weak as well considering the price drop, but if someone told us that they'd sell 300k consoles and less than a million Halo 5 copies just a few months ago it would have been considered a disaster.
We'll see how sales will go for both in November and December.

Emmm the views/posts aren't certainly to congratulate for the great results though :D

Yeah, and that's my point. We weren't going to see a huge dent in the overall gap in October since console sales usually aren't enough during the month to make it possible.

They are definitely banking on the "best lineup in Xbox history" helping them during November and December. It wasn't just an October thing/goal. November and December are the true "huge dent" months. It's yet to be determined if the lineup will help MS during those months but I don't think they'll beat the PS4 this Holiday season due to the Star Wars marketing blitz alone.

Maybe they should do an Xbox One + two free games of your choice deal on Black Friday ::shoulder shrug::.

Agreed and thats why I set my baseline for both consoles at 1 million for November. Anything under that for either of them is really bad imo. PS4 really should be closer to last years Xbone 1.2 mil but 1 million would still be a decent performance

Quite a few games over the past year or so have performed well compared to expectations/past iterations including Far Cry, Witcher, Batman, Bloodborne, DA:I, Mortal Kombat, Fallout, Blops, sports games and new IPs in Dying Light and Destiny. Software wise things are going ok although there hasn't been a monster new franchise that sells 25M+ and spurs hardware sales growth. Although expectations are high over this holiday I think the real challenge will be next year because it's going to be really tough to match this year.

Correct though its the Vader system thats sold out. Still plenty of standard Battlefront bundles for Sony to move for the month

Man, I left GameFAQs/IGN to get away from crap like this.

You're really going to try that card? Really?

Hey, he came at me with strong language and I made a post that I shouldn't have and pretty much immediately edited it, which is why it doesn't even have an edited mark on the post. It was uncalled for and inappropriate. If you guys weren't so damn fast with your refreshes, my momentary flash of irritation would be bits disappeared. Ban is appropriate since people saw it. Hopefully I learn from my mistake...wait a minute to push post and think twice. I should be playing Fallout 4 right now anyway, lol.

Uh, I preordered the BF SE PS4 at my local Gamestop yesterday for release day pickup.

Looking at October 2008, it's crazy how much the console retail industry has changed in the US. Wii sold 803k in its second October, even though nothing major was released for it.

PS4 + XB1 in October 2015 are basically equal to PS3 + 360 in October 2008, even though this gen was price cut and Halo month, while October 2008 was not particularly special.

360 in a distant second place in Oct 2008 would have been the market leader by close to 70k units this month,

half a milli views for NPD thread, is this normal?

Reddit linked their NPD thread to this thread, and that always pumps up the total views.

Reddit linking to NeoGAF has actually brought GAF down in the past since it gives the site an unusually high amounts of views all at once - so it makes sense that the are more views than normal in this thread's case.

I dont understand one thing, Lets say Halo Bundles sold 200 k , that means 100 mil. dollars, how can Halo 5 gain 400 mil without selling lik 4 million copies ? I think Halo 5 reached 3-4 million units worldwide in its first week..Otherwise 400 mil .dollar sales is impossible..

Did Europe have a bundle?

I wouldn't be surprised if launch shipment was around 3-4M worldwide, with the rest coming from hardware (and digital).

We've had bigger initial shipments, with smaller confirmed first month sales, in the past.

You know perfectly well that 360 was facing the Wii in its prime during that month.

And the Xbox One is facing the PS4 in its prime. Not seeing the problem since the reply was referring to the gap only and why the gap (value/number) didn't make it a true win.

I mean, if you want to just look at it as Playstation vs. Xbox then so be it but I was referring to NPD as a whole (all three consoles).

No, I'm not saying that at all. Many people (including Xbox One owners) will get a PS4 this Holiday season -- with some doing it in anticipation for Uncharted 4. Again, I'm not saying we won't see a boost from February to March for PS4 sales (since I believe we will).

What I am saying though is that Uncharted 4 is going to help PS4 sales during this Holiday season (similar to how I said that Halo 5 will help sales during this Holiday season in those posts you've quoted). Due to that, and March usually being similar to October for console sales, I feel that it's too soon to say if the PS4 will be over 307K in March 2016. We'll have to see what Sony will set up for special bundles.

My reply was about nothing more than PS4 sales hitting a certain number/range in March. Not about Uncharted 4 not being a system seller, not about people without a PS4 not buying the system to play the game, and not about the PS4 losing March. You added that in which is a bit funny since I feel the complete opposite.

Uncharted 4 will help system sales, and I believe that it will make the PS4 win March pretty easily. Whether it will get the system to more than 307K though is currently a "?" in my opinion. Not sure why me saying that caused you to go this far (haha).

You really need to just stop. Your posting style comes across as childish (as it's obvious that you don't want to have a true discussion) and you are mixing a bunch of my previous posts (that were various replies to different people) as if they were from the same discussion or thread.

Man -- things sure did get really heated in this thread all of a sudden (lol).

1) Do winners get a ribbon from NPD?
This would be the only reason for Microsoft to be happy about the way they won October.

2) If we include bundle hardware rev to Halo's toll, we should, out of fairness exclude it from Xbox hardware rev. You should not count the same dollar twice.
In this case Halo did phantastical and Xbox tanked on WiiU level.

Well to be fair Xbox One and PS4 will kill X360/PS3 sales during November and December. November has became far bigger part of total yearly sales since 2008 and that has probably led October to become more slower month. Wii was of course killing it every month even back then though.
