Rooster Teeth berate Jeff Gerstmann/Giant Bomb's Fallout 4 review while...

Wow, Rooster Teeth. Haven't seen them mentioned in a while. I used to be a huge fan of Red vs Blue when I was younger. I didn't even realize they were still making it.

Yer, not a fan of Rooster Teeth to be honest. I would put them in the same boat as Machinima and Funhaus in terms of integrity and legitimacy when it comes insight into the industry. They do have a loyal base of fans, but I assume that has more to do with the personalities and their "hilarious antics" rather than their critical eye.

Exactly. I'm a huge fan, but I avoid their opinions on most games like the plague.

I mean, this was fucking stupid of RT, but I'm pretty sure it's done. Jeff especially wouldn't want it to keep on going.

This type of bullshit drama is a big of why I turned my nose up at professional reviews for games. Seeing people firm cliques over numbers and encoraging the 7-9 scale is just the most cringe inducing nonsense.

"Look at that snug bitch saying something was 80% good instead of 90, we've got a rebel here" - Are you serious?

Embarrassing, really. But at least this thread got Rooster Teeth more exposure than they've had all month.

Agreed.

They lost touch when they tried to do any and everything. Stick to what you're good at, not what's popular. That way you get to keep your soul.

Never heard of Jeff Gerstmann, huh? He's the face of the old guard game journalism in the new era of personality driven game journalism. He's arguably the most important guy working in game journalism today. Oh, never heard of him. OK. Sure. What a clown.

What a weird situation. Rooster Teeth are nothing more than dull shills and even lightly insinuating that Jeff would lower his score for attention is hilarious.

Hilarious. On the bombcast this week Jeff and Brad have a great discussion about how standards change over time. Fallout 4 may be a great game (I haven't played it) but for it to exist with as many janky bugs and techincal problems as it apparently has, that just doesn't scream 4/5 or 5/5 to me at this point.

Its funny to read this thread on the same day as the Kotaku thread (getting blacklisted by Bethesda and Ubisoft). Quite the study in contrasts.
Unless I'm missing your point it shouldn't be particularly surprising Giant Bomb has a significantly bigger fanbase and benefit of the doubt than Kotaku.

He split the scores based on platform: 4 for PC, 3 for consoles. Also, if it's all personal preference on how you view review scores, why go into how you think he should have scored it? Should technical performance not factor into how good or bad he thinks the game is?
You'd think people would be fine with reviewers properly splitting up their reviews between versions for a Bethesda game of all things after what happened with the PS3 version of Skyrim.

I love when shills tell me everything is awesome!

Nothing says genuine and "from the heart" like the manufactured hype train stupidity that permeates this hobby. People get off on that shit and really take poorly to any form of derailing.

That goes deep into the culture though, that's an everywhere thing including this site and our consistent review thread embarrassments.

I really didn't want to chime in on this whole dumb debacle, but after seeing this...

Even the RT community savaged them over it. Here's Ryan's response in their subreddit where he doubles-down (check the downvotes)

Man, what an asshole. How dumb do you have to be to think "journalists sometimes give low scores for attention" is a salient point? How old is this guy holy shit.

When a bunch of people sit around a table wearing their pip-boys bitching about "why isn't fallout 4 reviewed EVEN HIGHER" I can't even begin to take them seriously.

Wow. Rooster Teeth look real bad here.

I don't understand how invested people are with review scores. Who cares what someone else thinks of a game? It doesn't make it any less or more enjoyable.

Fallout merchandise or not, I've always found Rooster Teeth speak from the heart and I can't say the same about Giant Bomb. 'Wine and cheese' might be a bit much but I think the general gist of what she said is spot on about them.
Sounds like you're too deep into it. Take a step back, look at the business realities and reevaluate your stance.

Youtube media company personalities being paid by publishers to have a certain opinion, being tasked to spread this to their followers and "speaking from the heart" are pretty much mutually exclusive.

People calling out Jeff Gerstmann on review scores cracks me up. The dude is the straightest shooter in the industry and seems to be one of the few people on the planet who is completely immune to hype. He calls it how it is and doesn't overlook flaws in games just because he is excited to play something.

The reaction those Rooster Teeth people had to Gerstmann's review was pretty damn lame, especially considering their close relationship to the game's marketing, but so is this really weird TMZ-style thread and OP.

what's the purpose of stirring shit further. Gerstmann's response should have been the end of things.

Jeff Gerstmann is a wine-and-cheese-eating shill. That arugula eating dirt bag needs take off his monocle, get on his hands and knees, and suck off vault boy like every other freedom loving American.

what what what what what what

They're making moves recently that suggest they're getting restless with their current structure, so fans were expecting some kind of acquisition since ScrewAttack got absorbed (I think). Instead they went Patreon, which hasn't hit their preferred mark of $7000.

We don't need more low scores if they're not warranted

They're warranted when we don't see numbers below 7/10 being used.

That a game gets an 8 or a 9 tells me nothing about how good it is with games, and that's unfortunate. I don't feel most games warrant an 'excellent' or higher rating, and that's what we mostly get now from the big journo outfits.

Damn. I haven't been into rooster teeth's stuff for a while now. They got to corporate to me and it looks like I was right.

I love how that spirit has been influencing Dan Ryckert

I find his reviews in GB way stronger than the ones on Game Informer

Lost it at "arugula eating dirt bag." Not sure why, but cheers.

In other news, all these games journalism threads today have just made me want to support GB and Kotaku more.

I meant contrast between Rooster Teeth and Kotaku. The implication here being that RT is shilling for Bethesda while Kotaku reported unfavorable news about them and lost access to review copies.

Who the fuck tales Gertsman seriously, dude is a joke, his idiotic hate for Yoshi games makes it even worse

Agree to disagree. I find him I have the most honest opinion about games. That's why I love the giant bomb crew. They don't gush about everything. Other podcasts are a bunch of guys stroking their joysticks saying, "omg this game looks soooo gooooooooooood."

If Red Letter Media (not to shit on them, I just figured they were smaller than Mega64 views-wise) can get over $13,000 through Patreon, I'm surprised Mega64 haven't managed to raise that much through the service. I would've figured their fanbase was still pretty huge.

Same, helps that they don't really put themselves in a position where their opinions on games and movies or anything is demanding attention or has any clout. They don't do reviews or anything, and they've talked about why they stopped doing reviews in the past. A creator got pissed about a negative review they gave and posted on of the RT (technically pre RT) employee's information online and started threatening him. And then later once they started making their own content realized how reviews affect creators and decided not to do it anymore.

When they give their opinions on games and stuff I usually treat it like a coworker or something talking about what they've been playing. I may be interested, or I may just be happy for them that they found something they enjoy, but generally I know what I want to play and will get to it when I please.

I don't think anyone should be berating anyone review work ideally, but I've seen Giantbomb do the same to smaller sites before too. Sucks.

What a shame it is to see the people who created Red vs. Blue show their true colors...

Welp more reason to continue to never pay attention to them.

To be fair, I missed a post from the guy I quoted saying he didn't realize that there were two different scores.

You can't be serious. "Speak from the heart"? I know practically nothing about RT, but how could you not tell what's going on by just watching that video? It's blatantly obvious.

Whether it's games, movies or pretty much any media, the "if you don't like something popular as much as I do it must be because you're trying to be different" thing is just frigging obnoxious.

Yeah, it's not like Jeff is known for getting in trouble because he speaks from the heart.

Wait

Jeff doesn't give a fuck. The dude likes what he likes and isn't afraid to say it. Yeah okay, sure, I'll take the opinion of Rooster Teeth on Fallout 4 after I'm sure they got paid by Bethesda to do all those videos. Bah.

I liked Fallout 4 a lot more than Jeff but I respect his opinion.

Giantbomb all day, son!

Game Informer has very different goals than giantbomb.

It's not a surprise that Ryckert would adjust his writing accordingly - or maybe it's more apt to say, to not adjust his writing anymore.

This is going to end well... RT attacking others opinions, for what? So if a game gets reviewed low by an outlet that means they are doing it just to look different and not because that is an honest opinion? okay sure.

unlike Rooster Teeth, Gerstmann is a veteran at producing well-written, qualitative reviews. He's been fired for doing just that in the past.

If Rooster Teeth ever tries dipping their toes in respectable journalism then someone let me know.

Yer, not a fan of Rooster Teeth to be honest. I would put them in the same boat as Machinima and Funhaus in terms of integrity and legitimacy when it comes insight into the industry. Funny, Rooster Teeth now owns Funhaus.

I LOOOOOVE Rooster Teeth on an entertainment level. I don't really care about their games coverage beyond just hearing about computer games I wouldn't know about.

Interesting. THere have been sites/reviewers giving games low scores, that overall received high scores, for YEARS. Yet Rooster Teeth never says anything about those reviewers.

But when its Fallout 4, they make a big deal out of it. Yeah, VERY interesting.
