There is no point to celebrate that PS VR sold out in minutes, when no one knows how many units will be available on launch.
If the whole production capability of Sony is a few hundred thousand units and every outlet in the launch countries got 50-100 units. It is obvious that as a product PS VR will be currently sold out everywhere.
By Christmas 2016 the PS4 user base will be near 50 million and then we maybe get a better idea how popular PS VR is as a console peripheral.
Think that if 5% of PS4 owners want to buy the product, it means that 2.5 million units must be produced in the next 5-6 months. Basically 450.000 units per month up or down, until PS VR launch.
And in the back of my mind I think that Sony maybe will present a PS4 slim on E3, its almost 3 years since the console launched, which means that they will need factory time for that product as well.
There isn't a smaller process of the PS4's APU. Given that the current revision is barely adequate in the form of cooling potential, shriking everything into an even smaller chasis is asking for trouble.
There was talks of a 20nm shrink some months ago, but TSMC's production has been delayed with the Taiwan earthquakes. So, PS4 slim this year? Very low probability..
