Hectic brawler Gang Beasts is getting online multiplayer

If you're familiar with Gang Beasts, you know it's one of the most fun local MP games around. So now us friendless folks can rejoice as the game's getting online too

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2016/05/03/gang-beasts-online-multiplayer/

You can sign up for the beta here
http://steamcommunity.com/games/285900/announcements/detail/603856846838349053

...the initial online multiplayer beta only supports Windows operating systems and is currently limited to three stages ('grind', 'subway', and 'trucks'), the next batch of stages that are being optimised for inclusion in the online multiplayer are 'buoy', 'gymnasium', 'ring', and 'elevators'.

I finally got to play this over Christmas break with a bunch of people. It was awesome! Some of the most fun I've had with local multiplayer in years. I've been hoping it gets online play. Now I'm just waiting on the confirmation email.

Somebody on the dev team finally realized offline co-op only games these days is a dumb fucking idea

Disagree.

This game really excels at being a game where you play and freak out alongside your friends. Unsure if it's an experience that can be replicated in an online environment.

Plus, I hope online mp doesn't suck up too many resources from the core local mp game.

Well I can't replicate this experience by myself, so I'm glad to have SOME option rather than none.

Online multiplayer was always the plan. The problem is that the physics are insanely hard to sync since they aren't using the usual method of having character movement work outside of the physics world. Gang beasts character controller is far more advanced than what games usually use.

Maturity, bitches.
Remember playing this at Eurogamer. Felt sorry for the game next to it that was being completely ignored as more and more groups of people would gather round this game. It was great just watching everyone trying to work out how the game even worked since no one really knew what was happening. That experience certainly could never be replicated online.

MP development is not as easy as you think, so it makes sense for a small team to add such a feature after the main bulk of the game is done.
They probably had some hooks in place though.

Thought the physics simulation over online was a big reason it didn't have it?

I think that may be why levels are coming out in waves? I haven't played it but do the other set of levels coming later have more interactive parts of the map?

This is great news! The lack of online player kept me away from it.

Will buy as soon as this is released!

I shake my head like *what the fuck were you thinking* every time of these games comes out with offline only.

A large demographic for these games are towards adults who remember couch co-op when they were kids but when you are an adult it gets harder to get everyone at the same place at the same time when your gaming time is highly limited.

I find the game would really excel at letting you play against anyone in the world at any time of the day instead of not being able to play anyone unless by chance you are off work the same time as 3 of your friends.

I had a lot of fun playing several matches of the PS4 build at IndieCade East this past weekend. Even kids had a lot of fun playing it and were digging it.

It was an older build so it didn't have any of the costumes or new tweaks that's in the Steam version but I did notice online multiplayer option in the main menu so online MP was a given as they branch out to consoles.

Amazingly fun game with a capital F.Local multiplayer is great but online would be even better.Should of been in from the start if I'm being honest

Thanks to this thread I bought this game and played about three hours yesterday with my sons- ages 5&9.

Most fun we've had playing a game in a LONG time as we beat each other up, tossed each other into meat grinders etc.

Only if you don't have others to play with you. Otherwise, local multiplayer is always better.

While I agree local is better, most people want online in some form because they don't have anyone to play locally with.

Edit: unless you're rich and rent some hookers

I hope this doesn't take an absurd amount of time to develop. I really want the game to have more/better levels, skins, and more polish.

I bought the game recently and it's weird watching old footage that has levels and character skins that aren't in the current game, along with a tutorial.

just fyi ~300 people are playing the game 18 months after release (roughly 33% more players than Evolve, which released around the same time and had maybe 100 times the budget and manpower) and it's sold 250,000 copies at $20 (never discounted below 33% off) so they've made maybe around $3 million off their dumb fucking idea up until this point. also the developer has 3 employees and they're brothers so their costs are probably a rounding error.

Considering every single post on the Gang Beasts Steam forums devolves into "WHERE IS ONLINE MULTIPLAYER??!?" hopefully this will quiet the mobs.

:/

I personally never had a problem with it being local-only, but I like having people over so...

I think they partnered with Double Fine for tech support/marketing/publishing. Not sure what the split is between them and Double Fine.

Glad that it's finally getting online though! Every UK games podcast the week after Rezzed always talks about how awesome Gang Beasts is, I've wanted to play it but I have nobody to play locally with.

I believe the Double Fine Presents initiative is not really a conventional publishing arrangement, it's just the occasional help with office space in SF, help with trade shows and promotional stuff, and like a mentorship program more than a conventional publisher. I can't imagine they're giving up much to DF.

Now is the time to go big and implement an ad-hoc tournament mode. Put randoms against each other and have them brawl during overtime or spectate.

Can't really imagine the physics of this game working even remotely well once latency gets involved. Rollback and prediction can only do so much when one jelloman throws the other off a moving elevator.

I hate that people keep demanding indie devs add online to their local multiplayer games. We get it, you grew up and its hard to get friends together. Not every game has to be for you.

Imagine how many more people would be playing right now if they launched with online multiplayer :^)

Oh shit, that's cool. Might buy it then, held off because I don't have anyone to play it locally with, but I always thought it looked fun.

Yeah I'm not really sure the game will translate well to online.

Awesome. Always wanted to buy this game but I don't have anyone over for local multiplayer. Definitely will be purchasing this.

Bought this on early access and I'm waiting for it to launch before I get back into it. Feels like forever ago, can't wait for the proper launch though, games a blas.
