Mighty No. 9 review thread

I doubt Shenmue's going to turn out well. The PR for it has been AWFUL.

PR wasn't really this games problem. The moment that people saw what the real game looked like they were questioning it. In comparison, Shenmue has been praised for how well it's updating the look of the series. Another thing that Shenmue has on its side is that there really isn't anything else like it out there. Yakuza is the closest but anyone that's actually played it knows that it doesn't really have a lot in common with Shenmue. Not like with MN9 and Mega Man where people can suggest something like Shovel Knight as a replacement.

I'm kind of sad this didn't turn out well, but I still haven't played most Mega Man games so it's no big loss for me.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Inafune's failed spectacularly on pretty much everything he's done since leaving Capcom, financially, critically, or otherwise. Soul Sacrifice is no different. Him talking out of his ass about how done Japanese game development is, then putting out trash like Yaiba are the reasons why people are increasingly skeptical of his talents.

huh? Soul Sacrifice has decent scores and there are people who enjoy it.

I'd say PR was a major concern for Mn9 after the initial kickstarter. The 2nd kickstarter to fund voice acting, the talk of an anime, a movie, the Red Ash kickstarter debacle. I'm sure there's more, but those are the big ones.

Saying 'there's nothing like Shenmue' doesn't really give it a free pass in terms of quality. The same goes for any game claiming to be unique.

Though from the looks of it, Armature Studios is making the Mega Man X Metroid Prime the world deserves with Recore. That's where Inafune spent his time, it seems.

As a backer I feel partially responsible for this

Not as guilty as Aeana though :D

I actually kept all of my Kickstarter emails. The update where they announce the Unreal demonstration (seven days work), shown in the below .gif:

Link to the video on Youtube

well...I'll show you rather than tell you.

And I quote:

"Whattaya think? Someday we will look back on this and laugh at how primitive it looks, but for now, for only one week of test work, it's pretty darn cool, don't ya think? :D"

I'm looking back on this, but I'm definitely not laughing. Well, I might be, but not for the reason they might have thought...

I cannot believe how haunting that final line is.

If there's passive hostility towards tou, it's only because you threw it at me first. But you do you~

I... did? The "whoop de doo Basil" quote is from Austin Powers, meant as a joke, just saying that I don't think them re-releasing the first six games was that big of a deal especially when they've been available in other digital platforms for a while now. It wasn't meant as anything rude toward you.

I don't even have buyers remorse anymore, it's looked awful for so long these are actually higher scores then I was expecting given how godawful the level design and aesthetics were in all the previews.

Maybe it's because I didn't back too high here. If I'd backed what I did for shenmue or bloodstained I'm not sure I'd be able to face this with the same equanimity.

Saw IGN's review on youtube, and if IGN are giving you an average score, that doesn't bode well for the rest of the reviews.

It's pretty clear if you liked the demo you're golden.
If you had problems with the demo chances are your problems weren't addressed.

I'll be astonished if we get this turd in time for it's release. It'll just make too much sense for us backers to get it late, even on launch day.

Shenmue isn't being developed by a used car salesman. It'll be fine.

You have more belief in it than me. I'm not that trusting of stuff that there's not much of to gauge. Bloodstained looks like it'll be good. Yooka-Laylee looks like it'll be good. Shenmue 3? Eh...I'm pretty doubtful.

What i'm saying is that bad PR wouldn't have meant anything if this was on the level of the old Mega Man games. The negativity that you see in threads about MN9 and the middling reviews aren't because of the PR. It's because people are disappointed in the end product. For comparison, look at Zelda right now. The PR for it at the moment is also terrible because of the comments about Link's gender. Yet when talking about the game specifically it's overwhelmingly positive. No one is going to hold bad PR against a game.

As for Shenmue, I was't necessarily say it was going to get a pass if it's bad. But I do think it can get away with being "more of the same", because more of the same with Shenmue is something people really haven't had in well over a decade.
