The Dark Tower Movie officially announced (Idris Elba, Matthew McConaughey)

I don't know about that. I mean part of her split personality comes from the fact that Odetta is black and lives a relatively privileged life for her time that meets some serious tragedies. Detta's existence comes directly from that experience. Changing her race and keeping that dynamic and is a tall order even for the best filmmakers.

I know there was a rumor early on that more or less fixed any inconsistencies that are going to be there with the books.
Roland is shown carrying the Horn of Eld in right in the first scene of the movie.
I have no idea if they're sticking with that, but it is literally all you would need to do to fix any changes the movies might make to the story.

Also I'm fairly certain Mcconoughey's Johnny Cash/Man in Black look similarity is totally intentional.

Stephen King himself alluded to that, which is perfect, IMO. That will guarantee that the book and movie can both be their own things.

Is Idris Elba too cool for a cowboy hat? You don't want to cast some crusty Clint Eastwood look alike? Fine, whatever, but at least make him look more like Roland, give dude a cowboy hat so he just doesn't look like DC Luther in a leather jacket??

Thing is, Roland didn't have a hat for a big portion of the series. There's tons of artwork of him wearing one, but if I remember right he doesn't get a new one until he gets to the Calla, and somewhere in The Gunslinger its specified that he lost his while chasing Walter. These images of Elba are more or less how I pictured Roland during the interim between those two points... Though I don't think he had a coat during most of the series either, I just could never picture him without one.

Awesome!

Jake looks a bit too "old" though. I haven't read the books in years but I always imagined him like a 10-12 year old.

Maybe I just remember wrong.

He does look a tad "older" I think it's also due to it being set in our present: 2016 rather than book Jake's When of 1977.

Also Jake in the book is in his Piper School Uniform which is probably a little too dorky lol

Yeah I need to get my head around this not being 1:1

I'm really hyped for this, especially because of Idris and Matthew.
And it'll be cool to see how this new iteration turns out and seeing the similarities and difference between the movies and the books.

Now that I think of it, might actually be a good thing having Jake be a little bit older anyway, so we don't get any of that Game of Thrones kid to adult fase going on where the kids looks 10ish in the first movie and then like a freaking 30 year old in the next one (aka Bran)
(/hyperbole)

I just want to see Oy!

Definitely ain't happening but I hope a potential sequel has the scene from book five (spoilers!!)
when Father Callahan kills the vampire behind the homeless shelter with Elton John's Someone Saved My Life Tonight playing in the background

If only...

im not ready to see Oy's death on screen :(

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
I am giddy. The "next cycle" concept is brilliant too, I was always so frustrated with the ending of the books because I've felt like it was one hell of a journey but ultimately Unsatisfying since we never got a full understanding of what Roland really needed to do to achieve his peace.

At least with LOST, which in itself is a dark tower-esque, we had season 6 to end our characters journey while the island stories could live on

Been forever since I read the books so someone correct me if I'm wrong but Oy's described as looking like a
tanuki
without using the actual word, right?

I'd always pictured Oy as looking somewhat like a desert fox, but with stripes and like a racoon tail or something. I can't remember how he's described in the books.

You say this, and then they'll go and cast Jaden Smith and you'll hate yourself forever.

I was hoping that red storefront behind Roland and Jake was The Manhattan Restaurant of the Mind. Oh well.

I'm hoping that they go film at the correct locations for the Restaurant of the Mind and the Rose lot. They could make both work with some CG.

D: But you were warned!
I just finished rereading the series recently and, while yes I do agree that the ending is unsatisfying, but I can pretend I don't still find it to be the perfect ending for the setup. Roland's on a journey to (whether he wants to or not) save the Tower. The Tower, meanwhile, seems intent on forcing him to save himself in the process. He'll keep doing it over and over until he essentially gets the perfect run. Where his friends survive, he doesn't lose the relics of Eld along the way, and (most importantly) where he doesn't need to sacrifice his own son to see the quest through to the end.

That's my take on it, but even without that, you are thoroughly warned to accept the final chapter and epilogue before the final final chapter as the ending. King flat out tells you not to keep reading past that... I doubt it stopped any of us, of course, but the warning is there. And without that final final chapter, the ending we get is significantly more satisfying. Roland completes his quest, the Ka-Tet gets a happy(enough) ending, and the multiverse is safe forever and whatnot... Good ending. Not perfect, but way more satisfying than a lot of King endings.

Also really glad I'm not the only one to have made the Zigzagoon connection. Named my first one Oy back when they were introduced since I just couldn't unsee the similarity. That said, rereading the books with illustrations this time around helped a lot when it came to picturing Oy.

Ugh, every time this thread pops up, I expect news of them shutting down production and tossing this in a bin. I can't believe this shit is getting made and fucking Idris Ellba is Roland. Can we just lock this thread till release please?

Well considering the project's history, it's only a matter of time. But until then, no reason you can't let the people who are enjoying the hype of it being great and fear of it being terrible enjoy it.

Out of curiosity, who would you have cast for it?

Aren't you the guy that praises Zach Snyder's cinematic eye or something like that?

Susanna need to be black and full racist mode, her character is so well developed through the books that at least her being racist and reasoning her thoughts was one of the best moments in the books.
I like Roland being black it gives a nice touch. Maybe Susanna can see him as a traitor at the beginning and he can be a voice of reason which brings her to reality faster than what is described in the books because after some point she can relate to him a bit faster maybe?
I would prefer if they make it at least two movies, not super high budget and more focus on characters and dialogs than the sureal action.

The only thing I've seen that looks off so far is Jake. He looks far too tall and old. I love the look of Idris. Glad they didn't go full on cowboy gear.

I was hesitant of Idris being cast only because he's a big guy and Roland is always described as sickly? Emanciated? I'm trying to think of a good word to describe him. With that said I can't wait to see what he brings to the film.

Roland gets old and weak after book 1 ends, but he was always described as a tough guy.

Is this production schedule pretty normal in the world of movies? It seems crazy that they're still shooting right now and the movie is scheduled to come out in January....

Thinking back on the books, I guess there isn't a huge amount of CG that will be necessary, but still this seems like quite the rushed schedule.

Hahaha yeah.

Whenever King would describe Oy I would just ignore it and go "it's a dog/wolf lalala can't hear you".

Photos from a set today - this most definitely seems like
the house in Book 3 that Jake uses to go from Earth to Mid-World.

I'm getting the feeling that this movie is going to be the Gunslinger combined with the Jake parts of the Waste Lands. I wonder what that means for
Jake dying. I'm guessing it's still going to happen at the end of this movie because it's too important not to do.
