TLOU PRO Patch 1.08 - Supersampling removed from all modes [Up: New DF video]

Many people bought the game for the first time due to the announcement of the Pro enhancements for 1080p users. It also was a factor for many people in buying the Pro model itself.

okay please stop with the utter fucking bullshit.

Never said it was chill I'm saying it happened to fix the problem of the game dropping to a lower framerate in unlocked frame rate mode on PS4 Pro than it does on PS4, they didn't take it away for fun it's a part of a fix for 1080P owners who felt like they had a worse game on PS4 Pro than others had on PS4, this patch made the game run better on PS4 Pro for 1080P owners. they did it to satisfy the people who complained about the game running worse on PS4 Pro. They will most likely also fix this to satisfy the people who want super sampling.

The correct fix is to either set the resolution in the 60fps mode to one that holds 60fps (say 1440p) or to make it an option so you can have unlocked mode with super sampling and a more unsteady frame rate or with a locked 60 at 1080p (or higher).

They should not have touched the 30fps mode as that was flawless.

Ultimately Sony need to add a 4k option for 1080p TVs and allow the console to down sample at a system level so the devs don't have to worry about it.

So, no official word from ND yet?
I'm fine with 1080/60 (while I think thats quite drastic), but chopping of 4K/30? Totally unreasonable.

I've submitted a complaint to the Advertising Standards Authority in the UK. It's simply not acceptable to remove advertised features like this.

I bought a PS4 as a direct result of the improvements touted in this blog post as TLOU is one of my all time favourites games:

https://blog.eu.playstation.com/201...-4-and-the-last-of-us-remastered-for-ps4-pro/

That quote is unequivocal as to the visual improvements offered by a PS4 Pro.

I took a screenshot of it, just in case they'll edit that article as well.

Maybe there will be another patch to correct this issue and this is just a temporary move to make sure performance is better than base PS4 and there will be a better solution coming soon.

If you think 1080P owners are upset about losing super sampling just imagine how upset the 4K owners will be when they drop the game from 1800p to 1440p.

Yeah this seems weird and I might not support their future products, been annoyed with ND lately with how U4 turned out (pacing was bad).

This. It fell out on Friday(?) so still item to say 'hey it was a mistake, we'll fix it asap'.

I'm a bit pessimistic after the Last Guardian scenario. Maybe it's not ND fault.. if they received a directive from Sony HQ... I don't know what to think.

You love this narrative that Sony are secretly telling devs to remove supersampling to push 4K TV adoption. I don't think there's enough tinfoil in the world for that one.

I bought it for the super sampling. I figured it would be good way to enjoy good iq on 1080p projector on new ps4 pro. Never played it before, wouldn't have bought it if it weren't for the pro patch.

Not sure why that's bullshit.

Well it's what I did. I played it on PS3 first and didn't feel to do it again on PS4 since the graphic difference was not enough, then I bought a PS4 (for my 1080p tv) and when I heard TLOU would offer downsampling I bought it right away. I just had time to start the game and now they remove the update that made me buy the game again...

It's still an awesome game and I'll play it again, but I'm very dissapointed.

I don't understand why they don't give the CHOICE to people, I mean I thought the PS4 Pro was about that: giving the CHOICE to people, high framerate/middle IQ, middle framerate/high IQ, and those kind of things, but it doesn't seem to be it. It seems that I won't see any benefit from my PS4 Pro until I buy a 4K TV, and I'll do that only when my current TV will die.

Many people bought The Last of Us Remastered for the first time for supersampling ? I'd wager the number of people that applies to would be in the double digits at most. I also can't imagine it being that much of a factor in any 1080p users Pro purchase either.

While they should have provided the option, the (what now seems like faux) outrage over framerate drops was far greater then any possibile benefit of providing supersampling, here's hoping they amend that so both sides of the camp can benefit.

i find it hard to believe as well. but i could see people double dipping or triple dipping as the game was on sale for $9.99 around when the Pro came out.

Disc needs patching for Pro support, and digital purchases come pre-patched.

Is it possible to sideload patches on PS4? I know you could do it on Xbox 360.

Have they said anything? Surely its a mistake. They advertised these improvements and im sure people have picked up the console for it only for them to remove said improvements?

ND needs to speak up here. I'll also contact the Advertising Standards Authority about this.

Nobody buys a $400 console for one game released ~2.5 years ago that already looked great as a remaster of an even older PS3 title.

And if they did...well...smdh.

It's probably more that they don't want the games running worse on the new spangly hardware, even if offered as an option.

I bought the Pro for supersampling and additional visual effects on 1080p displays, that were advertised. Now two of Sony's own games don't have supersampling. I don't care about framerate that much, but it seems that it's more important for Sony to please that loud crowd. Not to mention, offer visual fidelity for 4K owners only.

EDIT:
It's probably more that they don't want the games running worse on the new spangly hardware, even if offered as an option.

The supersampled 2160p/30fps mode didn't have that problem, but it didn't stop it from being removed.

Alright, so I have a 4k TV and a Pro, I played Last of Us last week and it looked amazing, I haven't patched it so in lamens terms... What's going to be different for me?

I was playing on the 4k 60fps mode, which was mindblowingly beautiful.

Nothing. Only effects 1080p users.

4K 60fps mode never existed, that was 1800p. 4K mode is 30fps. It doesn't affect you since you have a 4K TV, the change only took out the downsampling options for people with 1080p sets.

This some bullshit. I don't plan on getting a 4K display for at least another 2 years.

Probably the same for me. At the moment it seems like the 200$ device, that dark10x mentioned on the TLG thread, which enables you to force the game to run at 2160p on 1080p displays is the only option, and it's ridiculous that 1080p users should have to go to that kind of lengths to get the benefits from the same system. The Pro doesn't seem like a good upgrade for 1080p users anymore.

It's most likely no mistake because they went ahead and edited the original announcement to fit the new options introduced with the latest patch.

I bought the Pro as I had no PS4. I purposely bought the last of us remastered for the DLC and specifically to see all the changes. I was going to wait but I had a friend with a 1080p projector I went to visit during thanks giving. On that 100" screen of his the downsampling modes were just amazing.

I regret not having those modes now as I planned to replay the game with my fiancée over Christmas.

There is Tom's video. Now you can stop blaming DF for this issue.

Naughty Dog COMPLETELY fixed the frame-rate when running at 1800p (the 4K mode). It's buttery smooth and better than it has ever been.

They didn't remove super-sampling to improve performance. That is the take-away here. They actually went in and solved the real problem.

Which completely changes this issue - why on earth would they remove super-sampling if they solved the performance problems then? THAT is what does not make any sense. IT's either a bug or...I dunno, I can't explain it. It is wrong of them to do that. They definitely dropped the ball here.

I still think Sony needs to implement this feature at an OS level and let users decide for all games.

God dammit ND. One step forward, two steps back.

And yes, I agree, a simple switch in the OS would be best. I don't know really well, but downsampling to 1080p should take much if any gpu power.

That is quite strange indeed, I'll be interested to hear a response from Naughty Dog on this.

Wow. They better restore the super-sampling for 1080p users, I feel scammed.

Thank you for posting this.

Even though there are a number of different resolution/framerate combinations possible, and it might seem somewhat confusing, Digital Foundry explained this really well. I can now use that video as a reference, a very valuable reference, to see what combination works best for me.

I just started TLOU last night, is this issue only affecting 1080p users? Is it still 1800p/60 fps and 2160p/30 fps for 4K displays?

Business as usual on 4K displays. Except, now a much smoother frame-rate on the 1800/60 mode. All gain there =)

I just watched DF's analysis, great job guys, objective and informative without chasing clicks. However, WTF ND!!! Why remove SSAA for 1080p TVs when you fixed the bloody problem? I'm so pissed right now! Fuck shadows off and give us back SSAA!

Welp. I guess a new patch will be out soon. It's gotta be tough having the team work on the Uncharted 4 dlc & TLOU sequel + fixing TLOU Remastered.
