Gigantic Open Beta Thread: It's not really a MOBA

Lack of crossplay with Arc would suck, but wouldn't necessarily break the game's prospects. It's not as if Windows 10 and Xbox One are dead markets. More is better, absolutely, but would Arc being the missing leg of the stool really kill it...?

Many desire to never use the Windows Store out of either principle, a great many bugs that still exist, or both. Having the option to play without needing to go through the Store and the Xbox app is something that a lot of people want.

Personally, however, I don't believe that the game will somehow die without the Arc client version. So far, it seems the Xbox crowd itself is enough to sustain the game for the foreseeable future. And who knows, maybe when people get a whiff of the game's active, slowly growing population, they'll begin to contemplate trying it out regardless of the means to get the game.

I'm referring to the Arc side being dead as shit if there's no crossplay.

Either way I'm really baffled by how everything has been handled business wise. You don't launch a company around making a game this big, that's how you end up working without getting paid for way too long. I'm not even sure if they can get on Steam now since I'm pretty sure this is some kind of UWP deal right?

Yeah, there's some kind of UWP deal for the Microsoft/Xbox versions. They COULD eventually put it on Steam, but that requires Steam to be updated to support UWP installs (something Microsoft has said third party stores can do) and Microsoft to allow the UWP version go for sale on that store.

Introducing the Obelisk!

It's releasing tomorrow by the way.

Yep!

When they release the full patch notes, I'll put them in a post and in the OP.

EDIT: Whoops! Looks like it won't be a patch, just the Obelisks going up for sale.

HOWEVER, they just announced a major patch coming out "shortly after Obelisks", so I assume January? Possibly.

Steam definitely isn't out of the question. We'd love to release it there, but there are some business and technical hurdles we have to deal with first. I believe there are already some perfect world games that launched on Arc and were followed by a steam release.

The only version of the game that will ever be UWP, as far as I understand it, is the windows store version, since I believe UWP programs only work on win10 machines, and releasing a win10-only version of gigantic on steam seems a little redundant.

So, essentially they have no downside other than taking up a creature slot?

EDIT: I'm not trying to be snarky, but you can just throw these up anytime you take out an enemy summon and they don't get anything for taking it back.
They don't collect any power, also I'd assume that even though they won't grant the enemy team power for killing them, I assume it grants xp.

That said, I definitely think it would be pretty valuable for a couple people on the team to have this in their creature load out.

Obelisks sound cool - they're for aggressive play. No idea why you'd want them on your own spots, but denying enemy spots is a new-old tactic.

After further consideration, some people are saying that it will still give the enemy players not only XP but also focus charge for dealing damage to it (like dealing damage to anything else), so it's not a complete no-brainer. That makes more sense now.

Putting them on enemy spots seems dangerous pre-clash. Post-clash though I could see this getting use since some maps really condense down.

There has to be done something about all the quitters, really sours the experience to lose a close game because one side has a leaver ^_^

And I have Griselma as f2p this week and holy shit..
She's just insane. You can take over and hold points by yourself basically.
Wu is so much fun too, but I feel like he could do a bit more damage - how are you guys building him?

Just started playing. Gotta say I'm really enjoying the game. Been using Xenobia. Really like her. Payouts seem a bit low but I understand why that's the case. 40 bucks for the founders pack is a bit much though. 30 would be nicer, 20 is a no-brainer

I kinda hope at full release they rejig the founder's pack to include all future heroes. I adore the game but £30 is... a whole other game or two.

Like 5 games in a row where I've been the only one on my team with a positive kdr win or lose.

This god awful playerbase is actually going to make me quit this game.

I feel like it will be pretty easy to save crowns for new heroes and creatures just by playing on a regular basis, but we'll see.

Yes, if they are priced similarly should be fine, but I want to give the game some cash, and little bonuses like exclusive skins would be nice.

I tried Voden with the mid-range build. Slowing multi-arrows are amazing.

He brings a bit of everything to a fight: healing, utility, decent damage, and with talents his ult charges really fast.

I'm guessing decoy will be less effective as people get better, but for the time being it's really hard to tell exactly when he slips away in a big fight.

Yeah, Voden is a multi-tool monster, and he's not a 'master of none' guy either: I spec him mega-offensively (homing poison balls, extra damage on faster-charging basics, aggressive decoy, etc) and he churns out the damage.

The decoy is fairly obvious if not used cleverly, but in a team fight it can be very hard - and even when it's destroyed, Voden isn't immediately revealed. Best counter is to nuke the general area, as he can't sprint when stealthed. I also found a good HK can lock a Voden down.

So the end of the match the scoreboard was:

Me: 17 kills 7 deaths.

Rest of the team:

4/13
0/5
0/7
4/9

I suppose some kind of ranked mode is too much to ask for???

I waited to see if I wanted to buy the founders pack or not. Now I have 7 heroes unlocked so it feels like a waste to buy it now. Nothing else seems worth buying though. Crown boosts are a complete waste of money since they cost more than they pay out. The best deal seems to be just buying rubies and buying characters with them, but that's like $8 a character.

So I guess I'll just wait to they offer something more appealing.

The game has been running great lately, other than people quitting. I was in some really close games today. Games where both teams knew what they were doing. It's great to see people coming up with counter strategies.

I was in a game on Sirens Strand where the enemy team held the neutral spawn most of the game and never got a rampage. We just kept attacking their other creatures. Forcing them to constantly rotate and then picking them off.

From someone who doesn't plan on playing the game, I really like Aisling's design. Any character with a Stand is awesome. Plus, she gives me a Toon Link kind of feeling

I don't see the point of having to accept a match before entering it. It's not like you have any info to decide not accept the match at that point, and just serves as an extra step that causes people to miss and you be in a chain of many matches/mismatches XD

That's basically my main complain of the game, oh and quitters. They definitely need to do something about it, if they don't want bots at least made the remaining team more strong. It's very annoying even when you win due a quitter, and since the game still crashes somewhat frequently it might not even be the player's fault.

You can rejoin after a crash. Quitters won't bother.

Accepting a match precludes afkers sitting in a queue, and the plaguing a lobby. Far better that the afker is ejected pre-lobby.

In theory, yes. But it happened to me once that it failed to enter the match I left and I got a 5 minute penalty for even getting in another match

When matchmaking used to take minutes I can see this being an issue, but it's now usually just a few seconds. And it doesn't solve that problem, because if you leave after accepting you are in the match anyway.

Not to mention this is usually a non issue in other games that usually have no pre lobby confirmation.

All mobas I play have the 'accept match' option. I don't see it as a bad thing - as you say, queues are quick so it's not like you wait long for another player :)

I can't seem to fix the 30fps cap on PC. Tried disabling v-sync, windowed mode, etc. Nothing working. Halp! Sometimes it'll launch at 60, but suddenly lock to 30 a few minutes into the game. It's not a hardware thing.

edit: seemed to have fixed it. read on Reddit that having a background app running like GeForce Experience w/ instant replay enabled makes the game run at 60. Don't ask.

Quitters are a problem in any competitive game. Punishments don't do much of anything to fix it, most of the time. Quitters will quit regardless of the consequences.

On the other hand, I hope that--whenever Motiga introduces Competitive Mode--they spruce up Quick Play to utilize join in progress lobbies rather than "Ready for a Match?". I personally prefer that method than what's there now.

Maybe because Overwatch has spoiled me, but whatever. ;P

I'd like that too, but it'd kind of mess with team compositions. It would be like having drop in for a game of Dota. You're character has a level, build, and creature choices that make it slightly more permanent on a game-to-game basis than switching your character in Overwatch. What level do you start the drop-in guy at? Do you favour any specific hero or give him the one that the drop-out was using? It raises a lot of weird questions if you want to have in-progress joining.

Curious if this game will have any legs in '17 and/or if it can compete with Paragon's population. Game is pretty fun so far. Love the fast pace. Cross-play works flawlessly.

If it gets frequent updates and sells itself well with good ads and word of mouth, it will succeed. I just hope it does.

Why is it competing with Paragon specifically? It has to carve a niche as against Smite and Overwatch more than anything else.
It has its own style, pace and charm, so I think it'll be fine.

I think the game will just need more updates to trickle in, and the hype will build itself. 2017 promises a lot of updates for Gigantic, so we'll have to see what we end up getting.

It sounds like they have a pretty ambitious content plan for 2017, and the game is really its own thing in the market, so I'm pretty hopefully it'll carve out a solid playerbase.

A new tease...

They definitely needs better matchmaking if they want to take off. It's not funny being matched with quitters and noobs all the time, no matter which side, and if the team was good having an option to keep playing together or even a rematch would be nice too.

Edit: Not to sound too negative, I love the game, and it's currently by far my most played game on xbone right now, but it feels a huge portion of that time is being waste on uninteresting matches because one of the teams doesn't know how to play or when a quitter ruins a very competitive and fun match.

For sure, but instead of giving a time lapse punishment for quitters they should mark the profile and increasingly set a match with quitters only.

The game has already a go back to your previous match in place, so if it's anything that happened out of the power of the player there's still a very good chance to join back, so I think they could have more aggressive matchmaking algorithms without false positives being burned by the system.

Tripp shouldn't be able to double stun and melt me from full health by button mashing all of her abilities in 5 seconds imo.

Double stun is indeed too much. If well played you are literally defenseless against her.

Another char that I would live to see them balancing is Griselma. She is the only char I can't see no one going 1:1 against her and winning, heck, I've seen her take on 3-4 person party on their own when close to a tower.
