Phil Spencer: "I know we have to take risks [after Scalebound cancellation],"

if you don't have a vertical slice ready your game is not ready to show off to the public

as players we should be wary when a game is announced solely with a cg trailer unless a vertical gameplay slice is shown off within six months

I'm beginning to wonder what power this dude has, like at all, to influence the company's direction.

In other words, I'm beginning to not give any fucks what he says anymore.

It's been years of him at the helm, and years of disappointment.

Whoa, calm down buddy

Its just a game that have been cancelled.

It also happens to have been the game for which some of us still had an Xbox One to play, perhaps even the most anticipated game that had been announced for the console full stop. The anger isn't really hard to understand.

they're in a distant second place because there's virtually no third place, Nintendo gave up long time ago. But to say "thanks to large discounts and probably selling below cost" it's not appropiate, because they're not the only ones applying discounts, or selling below cost.

if you think i'm trying to make a system wars point you're gravely mistaken, i don't give a solitary fuck about the console marketplace in general or sony specifically. i'm pointing out that microsoft most likely never has made a profit from their console business, and what anyone else does is completely irrelevant to that point.

i think they'll pull out ahead of everyone else but in my opinion long-term there won't be consoles anymore, the entire business model is built on a creaky foundation of loss leading hardware subsidized by labor abuse and will eventually come crashing down.

I just don't think distinguishing via new IP is going to do much unless they catch lightning in a bottle. They'd be better off focusing on being the best place to play multiplats which includes hardware superiority, network quality/features, ecosystem, etc. Someone else commented that they hoped the dearth of new games wasn't due to investment of R&D into Scorpio, but I think they're far better off putting money there and things like backward compatibility, etc.

Putting money into smaller new IPs like Recore, Ori, etc. along with the Halo/Forza/Gears heavy hitters seems to make the most financial sense. It's hard not to look at the big investments in things like Quantum Break and obviously Scalebound as mistakes.

I tend to agree, in part because I think the risk/reward ratio with new IPs is tough for them (as shown by previous performance), and also because, to distinguish themselves from Sony, they need not just 1 or 2 new exclusives but a half dozen of them, and that would require years of work and tons of money.

It is much more straightforward (and presumably easier and cheaper) to go with the "more powerful hardware" angle, "the best place to play CoD, Battlefield, Madden, and GTA." I know that will appeal to a lot of the core, mainstream audience they are targeting.

Microsoft had new IPs as well: Ryse, Crimson Dragon, Project Spark, Sunset Overdrive, Recore, Quantum Break and Killer Instinct if you want to count something that hasn't been a thing since the 90s. Scalebound (RIP) and Sea of Thieves this year.

And they really stuck with those like Sony has with theirs!

Feels like you are trying to defend Microsoft on something that absolutely no one thinks they are striving hard enough to match Sony at.

That seems to make the most sense to me. If they can't win creatively (New IPs, exclusives) then having the "most powerful" console system would appeal to the COD / 2k / Battlefield crowd, would it not?

I have always felt like the whole XBOX/PC integration was something driven from the top down. But Phil is a console guy. I feel like he would rather Xbox be a console only organization with full console exclusives and all that jazz.

So ultimately what we get is a half hearted Console attempt (Phils initiatives) and a half hearted PC attempt (big MS driven), and neither are working. MS need to pick a bucket and jump in.

It'll appeal to a lot less people than they think if most people's friends already have a PS4.

Most will be playing on the PS4 slim/x1S , where there friends are, power is not much a needled mover outside the enthusiasts.

You're not entitled to shit.

Get off of your high horses and calm down. Just because some of you were dumb enough to invest in a console for one game doesn't mean you can smear the people that are responsible for the cancellation of it.

Many of you should know damn well that a game's release is never definite.

I swear, much of the stuff I read here is child like.

You could at least respond to the comment as a whole. The point is that most of the new IPs they've developed this generation have been financial and/or critical failures. Publishers tend to not give sequels to titles with those qualities attached to their name.

True, but what I meant was that they keep their games secret until they feel they are getting close. And blizzard does that as well.

More often than not Microsoft does this. Forza, Sunset Overdrive, Recore, Rare Replay, Ori, Halo, Killer Instinct, DR4, Screamride, D4, and etc got announced just a year before release or during the same year of release.

The only games that have gone past 3 years are Fable Legends, Crackdown 3, Quantum Break, and Scalebound.

The only games that went past 2 years from announce to release are Gears 4 and Sea of Thieves

nekkid

It doesn't matter who we are, what matters is our plan.
The number of people here who seem to have only bought their console in anticipation of a single, unreleased game.

Zero sympathy, honestly. That's orders of magnitude stupider than preordering a game.

I think if Phil has as much political capital as we hope he has, Scalebound wouldn't have been axed to begin with.

Worrisome

It's been shown at multiple E3's, was in development for 4 years and was a big title for MS. If this was a one off, fine, I agree with you, but MS are doing this over and over and over again. I think people have a right to be upset about the general poor release schedule coming to the XO.

It would. The question remains, though, how successful that strategy will be in attracting new gamers -- that is, gamers from "across the aisle," as opposed to gamers who are already plugged into the Xbox ecosystem and are just upgrading. If all it does it offer Xbox gamers a premium product, but it doesn't shift the overall sales picture, I don't think that's much of a success.

I really don't know how it'll work out. I'm not one of those guys who plays CoD, Battlefield, Madden, or GTA -- heck, I don't play online at all -- so I don't know how they think. Maybe there are a bunch of them on the PS platform who would pay $400-$500 for a somewhat better experience? I don't know.

* Make online multiplayer free.

* Shop around for more exclusives, not less.

* Team up with Team Ninja again for DOA7 and Ninja Gaiden 4 as Xbox exclusives.

* Buy some smaller great developer studios like the Ori, Cuphead or Inside devs.

* Increase Rare in size and make them do Nintendo-like single player platformers/adventures like they used too, and make sure that Sea of Thieves can be played in single player too.

* Release the PC versions through Steam with no Windows 10 requirement or better yet stop spreading out the exclusives to PC which will only make Xbox as a platform weaker.

* And make Minecraft 2.0 Xbox exclusive.

That's taking a risk that could help the Xbox brand. Canceling one of the few exclusives that looked interesting isn't about taking risks, it's the other way around. Check the forums, look at the world-wide sales, the Xbox brand gets weaker every day as it is. Maybe it's time to do something about that?

Exclusives, exclusives, exclusives. That's the way to do it. Scorpio won't save Xbox unless the groundwork for success is already in place, which it isn't today imo. Having the most powerful console later this year will be cool and all but you need exclusives too or it'll still just be the second best platform behind the PC.

Just my thoughts, nothing more, nothing less. I'm not PS4 fanboy, I'm just starting to lose hope on Xbox as a brand.

"Dear Santa,

I wish Xbox had infinity money so they could buy all the developers and games in the world and make Scorpio the bestest console ever.

And I would also like some Heelies please.

Thank you, Fredrik."

They would have had a lot more to spend on new games if they hadn't had so much invested in TV/ENTERTAINMENT, R&D for hololens which went nowhere, and Kinect with it's shit software.

after a few days of calming down, from being upset that a game i really looked forward to is now canceled, i think this thread is way overblown.

almost like some type of food people have been waiting for so they can get their chance to weigh in how much they loathe MS and XBOX.

Simply put, both parties directly involved mismanaged this game.

When someone asks, "please don't let your experience with Scalebound stop the company from taking risks. That's why I ❤️ Xbox" and he replies "Good feedback, I know we have to take risks, I realize right now probably sounds hollow but I agree"

Obviously the "risk" with Scalebound outweighed their limit/restrictions placed within the contract perhaps. we don't know.

HoloLens was never truly aimed at games.

It's aimed at designers, learning and businesses of those calibers.

I don't believe Phil, and I don't understand the "good guy Phil" meme. He either has been proven to be a liar, or, at best, to not have any real power in influencing which direction Xbox takes.

Also, man, from looking at some of these tweets, who the hell is that Timdog guy. Professional MS brown-noser?

And yet they showed games on it when they first showed it with Minecraft and later showed some kind of motion games they are creating with it?

Games for Hololens

And still Kinect was shit, and they modeled the whole system with it even it's OS which had to be re-written.

GTA is so obscenely successful, no one is going to blink an eye when they say that they need another year to develop a game.

That type of trust is hard earned.
Is Rockstar the only company standing next to Blizzard when it comes to publisher slack like this?

They must be right?

Just because it's primarily aimed at something else don't mean you can't have games on it as well.

It's like $5000.

The primary audience for this, was never 'gamers'.
