Since it's now legal, and in the interest of creating jobs, maybe we should crowdfund an effort to share with everyone the browsing history and habits of the Senators who voted "Yea" on this:

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) argued today that the privacy rules "hurt job creators and stifle economic growth."

The conservative argument against every common sense policy that protects people. How stupid do conservatives think you are? This is a great example.

Okay cool, first up, Donald J Trump.

A man of the people should have nothing to hide. Lets see his history.

Looking forward to all of the conservatives having their fetishes aired out for the world to see.

Given that personal, private, essential things happen online at least some of the time for many people, I'm more concerned about health and financial data being bought, sold, spied upon and used as leverage.

So turning on Privacy Mode with any browser I use for the next 4 years. Got it.

Joke, right? Privacy Mode just browses without cookies. Your ISP sees everything you search, period. A VPN is the only thing that could possibly block that, as it funnels all activity through a single source... not that the ISP couldn't monitor that, though.

It couldn't be clearer these Republicans do not work for the people. They work for big business. "Hurts job creators and economic growth" simply means "prevents very rich people from exploiting you even more". Any opportunity not utilised to rip you off or use you is lost money to these people. God damn this disgusts me.

Correct me if I'm wrong, all the ISP would see is you connected to your VPN and not the web traffic going through your VPN connection.

I figured they did this already.

The government probably does it already, this is the ISPs selling that info to well, anybody willing to pay for it now.

Of course none of that revenue will ever be passed on to the customer.

Makes me wonder why there isn't an opt-in site that would allow you to get a cut out of selling your info. Seems like a business opportunity.

The rule was only put into place October 2016, so unless you vastly changed your browsing habits after that I don't think you need to worry too much. Still shitty they'd change it back.
The rule was new, but was put in place in large part due to

  • Verizon modifying all traffic to track customers across the internet for "marketing" purposes
  • AT&T and Comcast starting to require additional fees to opt-out of similar surveillance
  • CableOne and other ISPs giving intentionally poor customer service to customers with bad credit

Assuming it's an encrypted connection in both directions between your Device and the VPN, yes.

SENDING: Device -> Router -> Modem -> ISP -> [VPN] -> Target Site

RECEIVING: Target Site -> [VPN] -> ISP -> Modem -> Router -> Device

What you need to look out for is bullshit VPNs. They are not all secure and some of them will sell your shit for advertising just as fast as your ISP would.

What's a good VPN then? And how can you tell the difference? I never got into using one of these, but more and more I find myself thinking maybe it's a good idea to know to at least know about them.

You'll have to look around and research.

Like everything else these days, look at reviews and web forums for the VPN sites and see what people are saying about whichever one you're looking into.

I definitely recommend NOT using a Free VPN service.

Great statement by Markey. Oddly enough, he seems to be the only one in that story with significant telecom donations... and he voted against it.

Keep in mind that they could always do this, they only couldn't from Oct 2016 till now.

Mostly this affects mobile usage since it can be tied back to a single user rather than shared household internet.
