What's a good VPN then? And how can you tell the difference? I never got into using one of these, but more and more I find myself thinking maybe it's a good idea to know to at least know about them.

I've been using Private Internet Access for a few years.

Bad ones are free ones. If it's free, ask yourself why...

Come on guys, how else are these massive corporations going to make even more money to bribe these politicians with? Let's be real here.

Very interesting.
Can any networking specialist elaborate on how the collections would work?

Would they be lazy enough to just listen to their DNS server or would large scale DPI be feasable aswell?
How would they bypass https to see for example what youtube videos and twitter feeds you're watching?

DNS servers van be a goldmine, here's one at my work collecting data:

With HTTPS, your ISP can only determine who you connect to, not what you access on their site--mostly. That said, they are in a much better position to glean indirect information based on your activity.

This is phase 1 of the future
Americans for decency act

That will outlaw all sorts of porn, anything leftists thinking and negative sites about king trump.

What's the process of getting a VPN? Just purchasing a license online and running a program on your computer?

It depends on the protocol. PPTP and IPSEC are already supported by windows, OpenVPN however is not and needs a client and a profile provided by the server admin.

I only use one to access my server from abroad.

The Senate measure was introduced two weeks ago by Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) and 23 Republican co-sponsors. Flake said at the time that he is trying to "protect consumers from overreaching Internet regulation." FCC Chairman Ajit Pai argues that consumers would be confused if there are different privacy rules for ISPs than for online companies like Google and Facebook. "American consumers should not have to be lawyers or engineers to figure out if their information is protected," Pai recently told Democratic lawmakers.

Now that nothing is protected American consumers have nothing to worry about!

Not letting me start a Congressional Republican organ harvesting and selling business is hurting me as a potential job creator and thus stifling my local economy. Make this right, Congress.

Am I GOPing correctly yet?

That will hide it from your wife/girlfriend, not your ISP.

Your ISP records every single IP address your modem connects to. You have no control over that unless you go through a VPN/proxy. But then, the VPN provider can sell your IP connections too if they want to.

There are no safe zones anymore.

I only use public Internet. See how long that lasts.

I thought our generation would make sane Internet freedom and privacy laws when we got to power but now it seems like we're all just going to turn out to be Nazis.

This sounds like it has to do less with advertising opportunities and more with the government having more of an easy access to check on the citizenship's behaviour. Scary stuff.

I honestly don't know much about VPNs. What's a good one that's cheap and would protect all of my computers in my house?

I don't really have anything to hide but this is some BS.

Let's all acknowledge the hypocrisy of Trump if he doesn't veto this after the outrage of him being wiretapped. For fucks sake

Train already left the station on that one. You think he cares that he's a hypocrite? He got voted in on it - all while saying Hillary was a "flip-flopper" and couldn't be trusted. He'll giggle about it in a couple days when he's back in Florida getting ready for his first round of 9.

I was using PIA (Privare Internet Access) but let it lapse recently. Time to renew. They are highly rated.

-They claim to keep no IP logs or history of any kind. So even if a warrant is served, they have nothing to hand over.

- You can pay for your subscription in gift cards if you want. Like Starbucks cards and shit.

I thought the GOP was small government?

They only want small government when they are not the ones in charge. They want big government when they could abuse power. Their actions in general shows this.

Using job creators as an excuse should cause the person's tongue to catch on fire.

If they can't use that, they would use the pedofile/child porn excuse or terrorist excuse. This is all in the GOP playbook.

"Never said I wasn't a hypocrite."
How can we tell if our providers are collecting data when "Private Browsing"? Asking for a friend...

Also, how does having regulated privacy on the internet stifle job growth?
