Well, any new Director he picks has to go through the Senate first to be confirmed so that would slow him down. Not everyone in the GOP is blindly supporting Trump anymore (see: AHCA) so it's not like he can make certain the next guy is just gonna be a lapdog and every Republican will just rubberstamp his choice either, especially as his public approval stays in the gutter (him firing Comey isn't going to help that number). However, let's say that happens and then a coverup is forced on a mass scale, the IC would probably just leak what they have at that point. They certainly aren't loyal to Trump. Public pressure on Congress to act would be immense if the evidence is damning, they would not sit idly by and abet in the coverup of such a potentially serious crime.
Nixon probably felt he was untouchable too when he tried to fire the investigators and we know how that ended up for him. Trump doing the same would likely just hasten a similar fate.
I'm afraid we might be back at square one. Comey got our hopes up by being so direct at the hearing. Meeting with Trump amidst Nunes running interference and all these campaign people suddenly volunteering testimony​ is shady as fuck.

Nah. The outcome I want is that everyone else in his cabal is taken down with him. And hopefully that includes people down the succession line so a Republican is no longer in power.

Maybe Comey threw Trump a bone to ensure he would stay on as FBI director so he could continue the investigation in the event that Trump actually won the election.
This makes me hope that perhaps letting Trump get into office was somehow necessary for the investigation to succeed.
I find it highly disturbing that amidst the chaos of the health bill you have a lot shady shit going on with Nunes now. Why in the fuck would the head of the investigation suddenly scramble and go rogue, and now some of the worst cockroaches immediately come out of the woodwork with almost smiles that they will happily testify. They arent wording things like they are happy to cut a deal, they are acting like Nunes just leaked all the oppo to them and they are doubling down on testifying that it was all bullshit. And now Comey making a visit to the WH.

You have Nunes breaking every standard of procedure, the worst suspects gleefully volunteering testimony, and MSNBC saying Trump people are wiping their phones. It really does sound like they discovered the extent of what the FBI had and feel like they're in the clear.
What Nunes saw wasn't the same as what the other two saw.
What I want to believe is that Comey had suspicions about Nunes and fed him a bit of information/misinformation to see where he'd go with it.
I want to believe. That's what it sounded like last week, but I'm still freaking out at how blatantly compromised the investigation is.
Need to remind yourself this is but one investigation. Senate Intel and Judicial Committees are doing separate investigations, and most people even before Nunes seem to go awol thought he might be compromised due to people learning Comey had briefing with other house members but Nunes wasn't in those meetings despite being the chairman. All this means is that results in this committee and anything coming from Nunes can't be trusted.
It absolutely does not seem like these people are comfortable.

For everyone Diablosing, the FBI does have frequent contact with the Whitehouse and manafort and stone have both stated they would be happy to speak on the record many times. And it's quite plausible comey is there to discus Nunes behavior.
Even if the Whitehouse knew what the FBI had and figures it had a cover story or an out, it most certainly wouldn't end the investigation and whatever they do have, will have a domino effect on other intelligence agencies abroad, almost all of whom have a vested interest in a non Russian patsy running the US.
There is no version of this mess that ends neatly or quickly.

Yeah, sorry, I wasn't listening closely enough the first time. Definitely speculative, but possible and maybe even likely. The exact quote:

This was in the context of talking about how Manafort, Stone, etc are coming in to talk but not Flynn.
