Starcraft Remastered confirmed [Summer 2017]. Original SC/BW to be free!

Custom games??? Plz say yes

If this supports the old UMS maps I know how I'll be spending my summer. I never played actual competitive StarCraft but I was all over the custom games. It was the first game I ever played online, and my first experience with any kind of internet community. StarCraft quite literally made me the person I am today.

That reminds me: if you haven't downloaded the Mass Recall campaigns -- the SC2 remakes of the SC/BW series -- DO IT! Fantastic recreations.

I do like that the originals are free. It's nice to have the new voice cast in the old game for consistency's sake, but it's great to be able to get the original if you want for no extra cost.

StarEdit enhanced with all hidden triggers unlocked and maybe even some extra options tacked on (eg ability to add portraits or create completely new units) would be wonderful.
Somehow i have a feeling they won't be adding that though...

So wait, that article is making it sound like they didn't add unlimited unit selection. At the time, it was acceptable because that was a technology limitation, but are they really going to make me dance around to select a tossaway army? I always hated needing three control groups to send a blob around.

Patch notes for the original Brood War, 1.18a. It's expected to hit 30 March.

I was wondering if they would bother to update the old version for Mac (where it hasn't worked since OS X 10.6, since BW was never built for OS X to begin with and backward compatibility eventually went out the window) or if Mac users would all have to migrate to the remaster, but the patch notes indicate that support in the original game is in progress, though not available just yet.

Hopefully they still have the raw cutscenes somewhere. They definitely need better encoding (heavy dithering, very "blocky").

Absolutely. They're not going to risk needing to rebalance the game around core mechanics changes like that, which would definitely be required if you mess with grouping.

This is basically SC1 with new graphics and UI layer. It is not a remake. It is like Halo Anniversary or Halo 2 Anniversary really.

I was a fucking fiend for the Raccoon City defense maps. Diplomacy was rad, too.

UMS for SC1 (and WC3) seriously defined a huge part of my childhood.

Oh shit.

I'm assuming UMS will work then?

Custom game lobbies are confirmed in the TL interview, but I'm not sure about UMS or the editor. I would assume so. [Edit: Custom maps are on the official feature list, so the answer is yes.]

I don't particularly care for BW UMS myself, but it would set a strong precedent for a future remaster/revival of WC3/TFT UMS, and that I certainly crave so I can bring the vast repository of Wintermaul clones on my hard drive out of retirement.

Hm, I was expecting a remastered Warcraft, as I recall hearing they had a small team working on it, but this works too. I imagine it'll be next anyway.

Yeah I think this probably means we can expect remasters of the other classics at some point.

Somehow i would not be surprised if Blizzard's plans for Warcraft are slightly more ambitious.
Like remaster all three games at once. Or remaster WCIII and rebuild WC1 and WC2 on that.
Just guessing.

A remastered Warcraft 3 with an expanded level editor is something I dream about.

I kind of want Warcraft 2 like I remember it though, it feels like it'd be weird if it was built on WC3's engine (or something similar). But that's just my nostalgia talking.

Man, that game...it was one of the very few video games my late father took an interest in, and it was purely because of the click-quotes. He got a kick out of those, particularly the footman's whole "Join the army they said, see the WORLD they said..." line.

Ah, memories.

Will there be a map editor and classic-yet-modern Battle.net? Critical info.

Looks great though, just like I remember SC looking. lol Can't wait.

Don't mess this one up, Blizz. pls

Since WC1/WC2 aren't beholden to a strong competitive scene and living community, they are games that really could do with a UI/QoL rework that introduces modern conveniences in a cleaner package, easier to play and control. WC3/TFT holds up just fine (and is all 3D rendered anyway, theoretically scalable to any resolution) but lacks widescreen support.

If there is one game that needs a remake rather than a remaster it's Warcraft 1. It's mechanically broken.

It is one game that aged very badly. Warcraft 2 looks frankly pretty good even today though its campaign gameplay is a tad simplistic.
But Warcraft 1... Well, it is ugly, it plays badly, i lacks any real strategy... It is so broken on so many levels. Needs upgrading to at least WC2 level.

As mechanically tougher bw is to play, I think it is simpler to watch. I feel like it demands less explanation about what is going on and why.

After all this time without playing sc2, it is impossible to watch it without Constant explanation about everything. Bw feels more straightforward. The shooty units shoot, the bugs hit in the face, the sword aliens slash.

Moreover, in the TL interview the developers indicate that some of the feedback they received urged them not to go overboard with exposing data in the new observer interface. Those who have been watching ASL know that Tasteless and Artosis like to talk up the "suspense" of BW observation, where with limited awareness of things like army sizes from the supply counter, you don't have as many situations that are foregone conclusions to the casters.

The countless of hours i lost in this game. I am ready to play it all over again, while SC2 was good like others said here, they did to much into the game. For competitive games this game will be a hallmark again.

I remember how I got blasted in my first Starcraft online match (1999) because I didn't know how to ally. Good times.
I remember being allied but they traitors / trolls changed sides and betrayed you - much fun!

So excited for this - the original is probably my favourite game ever

Can't wait till the nostalgia waves to crash against the brutal reality that is relearning how to play the game with it's archaic systems after every modern advancement in the last 20 years.

It's pretty easy to get into tbh. I was born in like 2003 but it plays super well still
