This thread is for stupid GAMING questions that don't deserve their own thread

I'm playing dark souls 2 (ps4) and I want to switch my build to hexes. My stats are pretty much all at their caps except magic and I'm not gonna respec. My question thus, what weapons and chimes (?) should I use? I don't really care if it's fast or strong, as long as my hexes do damage :)

This isn't even a question, but Resident Evil 5 has some of the best damn character models I've ever seen. I'm replaying it on Xbox One and its really amazing, I remember being a bit disappointed after Re4, but coming back to it this is a great game.

Do you want to go solely hex for damage, or do you want a weapon but with something that casts hexes in your off hand?

If you want to cast hexes, you want the Black Witch Staff, which drops from the Witches in the Undead Crypt, as well as a mimic in Aldia's Keep. This staff allows you to cast both staff and chime hexes. I think there might be other things that deal more damage, but the versatility is more useful in my opinion. You can also carry sorceries and miracles with it too.

If you want to use a weapon, the Sanctum Shield from the first DLC, in the Dragon's Sanctum. Again, this allows you to cast everything, plus you can use a one handed main weapon too. You can't parry with it though, and it's only really useful for buff hexes, not offensive ones.

I wouldn't pair the two up however, as the black witch staff outperforms it as a hex casting tool, and the Sanctum Shield would be redundant.

Equipment wise, you should join the Pilgrims of Dark to get the Abyss Seal ring, and finish the questline to get some hexes.

Hang on, what magic haven't you leveled up, int or faith? You kinda need both for hexes, and to have them at around 30 each, although some specialist ones require you to go up to 40 (and I think one needs 60). You can work with less than that, but you'll be limiting yourself in your selection of hexes. Is there a reason you don't want to respec? You can get plenty of Soul Vessels throughout the game.

Cool, thanks for the info :) Nah I'm just not a fan of respecing, and my int/fth are at 25 respectively at the moment. Pretty much everything else is at 40 or similar. I'm overleveled af :D

No problem. You should be able to get along with that to be honest. I didn't know if you were at like 9 faith 9 int or something lol.

You can give Simpleton and Skeptic Spices to the NPC in Iron Keep (the Dragon Remnants covenant guy), which lets you reduce the intelligence and faith cost of a hex by 1. You can find a few of each through playing the game, and you can farm then from the Witches in Undead Crypt.

Given my stats, is it worth upgrading some sword to Dark etc? I'm rocking the Raw Santier's Spear at the moment.

I've been using the advanved search but wasn't able to find a general thread on home audio setups / AV receivers / speakers etc. for gaming or otherwise. Is there one..? I found a lot of individual threads and I'd just open one myself if theres no general thread.

I'm not really familiar with dark damage builds, but I've heard good things about the Roaring Halberd infused with dark, which you get from giving the Skeleton Lords' soul to Straid.

You can also buff it further by using dark weapon.

Dumb Question- Why do games give you an option to go up and down ladders with 2 speeds? Does anyone ever not "sprint" up ladders? And who goes down them the slow way.

Why don't they just make you "sprint" up the ladder by default.

Probably pretty varied in terms of reasoning. Some games might do it to retain consistency if they have a sprint button. Other might do it to make going up a ladder seem more "interactive". Also, I feel like there has to be some psychological effect in that you experience the ladder going by faster if you yourself have control over "going faster", but that's purely speculation.

I've never used a halberd seems like a good opportunity. Thanks for all your help :)

Why do bullets actually come out of the players eyes in First Person Shooters, but from the first person stand point, it appears to come out of the gun?

Bullets coming out of the eyes makes a lot of sense collision-wise. If the player looks directly at an object, then they're guaranteed to hit the object. The bullet's initial position and initial angle are perfectly synced with the player's camera. If the bullets came out of, say, the gun's position, but kept the same angle, then the bullets would always hit a position that's offset from where the camera's pointing at.

If you notice people in real life shooting guns, the most accurate way to shoot is to aim down the weapon's sights. This basically aligns the gun's position and angle with the person's eye.

I can't speak for all games because they probably have different systems, but in Counter-Strike, the bullets APPEAR to be coming out of the gun because the game does some fancy calculations. Since the actual bullets in that game are hitscan (they don't actually exist, the game draws a line and calculates what object the line hits first), the game figures out where the bullet hits. Then it draws a fake bullet coming from the gun and makes it appear to travel towards where the bullet hit. This can lead to some weird occurrences, like bullets appearing to pass through people without hitting them.

I don't know how clearly I explained all this, but hopefully you get the gist.

That makes sense but it absolutely sucks. I've yet to play a FPS that didn't have this issue-

Player 1 is on the ground looking up at Player 2. P1 can only see the top of P2's head.

P2 is behind a wall and can fully see P1. Gun appears over the wall in P2 perspective

P1 can't hit P2 without spectacular aim, while P2 can hit P1 without trying.

This has bothered me for years and I was hoping that all the new tech would somehow fix the issue.

This situation would play out just the same with correct physics.

Yeah, pretty much. If they tried to actually make the bullets come out of the gun, you'd be dealing with many more issues than if the bullets came out of the eyes. It's not the tech, it's something inherent in how first-person games are made.

How so?

If the bullets actually came out of the gun, P1 would be able to see almost half of P2's body instead of just the top of his head, giving that gunfight way more of a fair chance.

Or on the flip side, P2 wouldn't even be able to shoot at P1 because his gun would be behind the wall, but such as it is now, not the case.

I doubt anyone reading this has played this game, let alone played it recently, but am I the only one that finds this game to be ridiculously difficult?

250px-X2_-_Wolverine%27s_Revenge_Coverart.jpg

It's a shitty licensed game from 2003 so no talks about it and there aren't many videos of it. So I'm just wondering if anyone else considered this game a nightmare to beat.

The levels range from 5 minutes to nearly half an hour to beat and there are no checkpoints. One simple screw up in many levels can kill you since a lot of enemies/hazards can either kill you in one hit or in a matter of seconds due to no invincibility frames. Bosses are brutal displays of developers not giving a single fuck and they're stealth segments that require trial and error to pass.

Like I said, it's a crappy licensed game from the PS2-era so no one gives a crap about it. I'm just wondering if anyone else remembers this and if they had trouble playing it. Since I remember it giving me hell back when it came out.

Super late but yes! Had to use cheat codes to get past the Wendigo bullshit, but ended up beating every other level (just had to skip that one).

Look forward to VR solving your conundrum.

Your gripe is an artifact of the situation that what you see of yourself in a traditional FPS is a lie, very few games still have accurate body representation in both views due to the amount of extra work involved in constructing models that work both in first and third perspectives. Normally you're just a camera floating in space with a gun and hands attached to it that's invisible to other players.

I never thought about that in VR. I only have the demo of Rigs on PSVR, but it would be interesting to see if my original scenario could be replicated in that. I know it's a slightly different type of shooter with no ADS even available, but it would still be interesting to see.

Point taken. I was thinking more about perspective angle disparity in a cover-based gunfight.

Don't know what titles that are available on PSVR that support free-range motion control in a multiplayer setting. But the main difference I suppose between a VR shooter (up to this point anyway) and traditional FPS is that in a traditional FPS your gun is attached to your face (some VR games use face aiming as well..(!)), with a different model acting as your physical representation to others and in VR your gun is attached to your hand and that's represented 1:1 in the game world.

What are the thoughts on multiple overlays for PC games?

Let's say I had the battle.net games added to steam and used to the steam overlay to be able to talk with friends. Then the nvidia one was added when I upgraded to a 1000 series GTX. Then Battle.net also put some sort of overlay for streaming to FB. And now the W10 Gamebar one is required to enable game mode...

So pretty much I would have 4 different ones in a single game. I used to think that one was enough and I was a bit concerned when the nvidia one was added (which is useful for recording and streaming), but they keep adding one on top of another. What's the consensus on them? Will they degrade graphical quality, apart from decreasing performance?

Whats the best way to transfer Steam game downloads from one PC to another?

My problem is that I have very limited bandwidth at home and want to download Bayonetta on my PC. I can take my laptop (not meant for gaming) over to a friends place and download it there and then transfer that download to my desktop.

Could I do this with the game backup feature somehow?

They say that just copying the folder is much faster than using steam build-in backup too.

1) Download the full game.
2) Begin a download in the computer with limited bandwith, pause it
3) Copy the game folder over the existing partially downloaded one.
4) From game properties, do an integrity check. It will check it and consider the game downloaded, maybe at 95% and have to download a few more files.

That's how I did it some years ago, with Darksiders. Not sure if it has changed a lot.

Thanks. How does it work if I do it with Steam's built in backup?

What is GAF's overall impression of Telltale's games?

Tech issues aside, mostly talking about the concept. It seems like something that would get lambasted on here but, as someone who isn't a fan of QTE stuff, I can't get enough of these games.

Currently playing through Batman now and it's been great.

Last time I tried, you specify a folder and select the split size in case you want to burn it to a DVD. Then go to Steam - BAckup or Restore and specify the folder where it is. Just that it is slower than copying, unless they have improved it over time.

Regarding Telltale, I have only played The Wolf Among US. QTE's are... uncommon.
You get one QTE event per episode, maybe two
. They won't burn you and don't ruin the rest of the game. I actually enjoyed them a lot, and the only other game I have liked them was Heavy Rain.

I haven't played any of them really, but GAF seems to love them in general, besides the technical stuff you mention. The storytelling etc is top notch afaik.

Is there an actual difference between the ASTRO A40 TR Headset/MixAmp for Xbox and PS4 or is it just marketing?

White Xbox One Version
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014H2T84K/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Black Playstation 4 Version
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B014F77FGA/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Both mixamps will work on either console for audio from the console to your headphones (or any console really with optical out or if you use a splitter for HDMI), but specifically for chat, they will only work for their advertised console.
I use my Xbox One TR Mixamp with Fidelio X2s hooked up to an HDMI switch with an optical out port and I was able to use it for even Breath of the Wild on Wii U.

I started playing The Wonderful 101 a week or so ago and out in about 4-5 hours but didn't enjoy it much. I tried it again yesterday but turned it off after about 10 minutes. Does the game change much really after about this point? I don't want to say "get better" because I don't necessarily think it's bad but I'm just not feeling it at all which I'm surprised by but there are some things I dislike about the gameplay mechanics and level structure, yet at the same time I don't feel it would be fair to label it a bad game. But I can't see it changing much so I don't want to waste my time playing more of it if it is much the same.

Anyone know if the PC version of Nier Automata is region locked ? I want to import a physical copy but don't want to waste my money if it is region locked

Is 'Download List' in the PSN app on vita supposed to show all the games you own from PS+ that are playable on the system? or is that a different place to view such a list?

Are there or any or any upcoming Souls like games that have difficulty options? I know this basically goes against what they are meant to be, but sometimes I just want to relax a bit haha. I loved Bloodbourne but don't know of I feel like dedicating as much time that's needed to tackle a other one at the moment.

Does anyone know if the Xbox One supports HDMI-CEC? I can't find a setting for it. Google's giving me conflicting results about only the S model supporting it, or all models supporting it but requiring Kinect. I have the original Xbox One model and no Kinect.

Is Fate/Extellea The Umbra Star a good game if you're new to the franchise? Or will I be lost if I'm not familiar with the series.

Love me some Dynasty Warriors type games.

I don't believe it does. The original used the Kinect for ir blasting. The S has this blasting in built.

I've noticed in the past year or so that the word "bespoke" has gained a lot of traction in gaming circles.

When I first noticed people using it on here I assumed it was due to the poster being a non-native English speaker and mistranslated to a more archaic word than the one they intended.

Since then, more and more people seem to have added this word from the late 1500s to their vocabularies. It's a word from the last gasps of Middle English during the evolution of Modern English that is now commonly used again in gaming circles. Both Digital Foundry and Giantbomb have used the word in the past week.

So, why did such an archaic word get a sudden Renaissance?

Either it's getting traction overall or one popular writer likes to use it.

Why do so many console games require you to press two face buttons with your thumb at the same time when there are so many other buttons to use on modern controllers?
I understood it when I played New Super Mario Brothers with the Wii Remote but it controls the same way on wii u?! It is the same with the default controls in Sunset Overdrive - jump button and right analog stick both rely on your thumb, and both actions are necessary to be done almost simultaneously.

It's a fairly common word in the UK , its certainly no one that I'd find weird seeing it used.
