Yes. His consciousness in the machine network was not corrupted so it was safe to do so.

Seems to me that having a Yorha consciousness in the machine network able to control them would be...strategically useful

That's really only one of three nitpicks I have with it. I still think that 2B's characterization reacting to the peaceful machines in A/B is...inconsistent, and the placement of the god cult sequence after the fight with Adam and his own reflections on finding meaning in death feels...backwards? I feel like if you reversed the order of those two things they would escalate quite well into each other

It wouldn't be surprised if she hated machines so much because they are directly related to the endless war she was fighting, which is the reason why she had to kill 9S over and over again. She seems pretty mad at them during ending A and B

Right that's exactly it. To me at least she's way too blase about Pascal and the village. Like she should either be basically on the verge of killing them all or profoundly shaken in her beliefs by their existence, neither of which really come across to me

I don't actually feel like she harboured hate for them. A lot of her remarks against the machines came across more as warning 9s to not dig any deeper than he has to. Because... You know.

It think this is true too, but at the ending of A and B when she was pissed off at machines she had to be coming from somewhere. Unless she was just caught up in the moment, which is entirely possible.

I mean the had a bigass battle against the machine boss and then she had to kill 9s due to the logic virus so she's probably caught in the moment.

This is a weird connection, but I can't get the creation myth of the dwarfs of Discworld out of my head (one of my favorite bits of microfiction)

The first thing Tak did, he wrote himself.
The second thing Tak did, he wrote the Laws.
The third thing Tak did, he wrote the World.
The fourth thing Tak did, he wrote a cave.
The fifth thing Tak did, he wrote a geode, an egg of stone.
And in the twilight of the mouth of the cave, the geode hatched, and the Brothers were born.
The first Brother walked toward the light, and stood under the open sky. Thus he became too tall. He was the first Man. He found no Laws and he was enlightened.
The second Brother walked toward the darkness, and stood under a roof of stone. Thus he achieved the correct height. He was the first Dwarf. He found the Laws Tak had written, and he was endarkened.

Then Tak looked upon the stone and it was trying to come alive, and Tak smiled, and wrote All things strive.
And for the service the stone had given, he fashioned it into the first Troll, and delighted in the life that came unbidden.
These are the things that Tak wrote

All things strive

Sure. That he carries a sword at all is enough to communicate that.

Heh, well actually scanner models aren't even supposed to have weapons. 9S found his sword during a mission (maybe to kill 2B, I don't remember) and was allowed to keep it in the future for some reason.

From ending D:
I was anxious.
A soldier from the moment I was born, thrown into the world alone.
Nothing to rely on.
No God to believe in.

I was alone.
Tasked with infiltrating enemy territory to gather intelligence.
In the fog.
In the flames.
Alone.

I am physically incapable of NOT hearing sick power metal guitar solos whenever I read these lines.

I probably said this pages ago but anyone else thought ending D was beautifully tragic?

9S finally getting his revenge followed by unceremoniously impaling himself on A2's sword and bleeding out together while the Ark launches.

It felt poetic.

I cannot stop thinking about this game. For some reason, the side quests has been playing over in my mind.

The way they expand on the game's central thematic concerns is pretty well executed, especially in comparison to the genre at large. They don't just build the world, they directly feed into and comment on the central narrative.

In my 2nd playthrough I'm taking my time doing them all, and yea, it's some good shit, so much stuff I didn't bother to do the first time around.

Bruh I am shook, I had no idea that you could fall and survive the drop from where the bridge to the commercial center is. I got knocked down there, so lo and behold I fell and did not die, and found myself surrounded by a bunch of machines. Luckily there was an elevator which got me back up, but yea, did not expect that at all.

That quest down here was one of the more haunting ones.

You need to enter the area from the Forest Kingdom. If you follow the river in the Forest until it goes off a cliff, you can find for a way down if you look around a bit.

I see...

Actually now that I look at my map, there are several quests where I have no idea how to get to them, near places like the factory and such.

EDIT: Nvm, they're terminals.

I never thought of that. I kept forgetting 2b put her memories in that sword. So when he gets stabbed he absorbs 2bs memories.
I would want to believe that happens, seeing all of 2B love going through his head while dying. Anyone would be screaming like crazy if they went that.

Well he did get infected shoving fake 2B's arm into his cut off one.

Anyway I'm just making sound more tragic, I really doubt that's what happened.

How does that even work anyway.

Is it like a USB interface except it's a... sword?

I guess they have to have some onboard computing power to interface with the NFCS systems - storing personal data doesn't seem like much of a stretch from there. I'd say it seemed tenuous due to its implications for the ease of transference of android consciousness, but 9S being able to save his brainstate in Ending A/B goes along with that.

Actually, no; that doesn't hold up, looking at how the Engels arm sequence played out...

YES! Absolutely.

It's still world building in a sense, but this game has a very compact world. It's not concerned about telling you the situation of the war in the far east lands, everything you learn ties directly into the main narrative, themes and characters.

I keep using that example, but that's because it was incredible to me, look at the description for the Koi Carp Machine:

A machine lifeform resembling a koi carp.

It is surmised that fish machine lifeforms were created to scare away the real fish mankind used for food. (They look very much like the native species, so whoever made them did their job well.) Fish machines are also extremely aggressive which helped deal a huge blow to the ecology of aquatic life on earth. Once they had fulfilled their purpose, all maintenance was stopped - but they still managed to adapt to, and thrive in, their environments. As a result, current species are no longer hostile towards androids, and instead concentrate on not dying much like any other animal. In contrast to land-based machines, however, their data banks are no longer synced, so the evolution of their intelligence has pretty much ground to a halt.

Many machine-fish have formed symbiotic with natural ones, allowing them to consume the sessile organisms on their bodies - such as moss and barncles - in exchange for protection. With natural fish performing their maintenance, machine fish now live lives which are the exact opposite of what they were designed to do.

In recent years, new ecologies have been observed as a result of such symbiotic relationships. Some, for instance, have formed colonies in order to protect themselves, leading to increased aquatic life cross the planet. Of course, the current ecology is quite different from when mankind still inhabited Earth, but the sheer quantity of fish is sure to be a surprise once they finally return from the moon.

However there are even bigger changes afoot. With no new fish machines being created, they are predicted to go extinct sometime over the next 150 years. Scientists are greatly interested in what may happen to the original native fish when they lose their mechanical protectors.

Like, look at this shit. A goddamn fish gives me more information and food for thought about the main story than your typical RPG book you find around the world.

Of course, it's not typical, not every fish brings as much information as this one, but they don't have to. They don't have to just put a ton of text in the game if there's nothing they need to say. It's part of why I really recommend doing the sidequests. It's not just because the writing is captivating, it's because it directly affects your perception of the main story.

9S starts to warm up to the machines in the sidequests, even if a little, so when he goes back to "nothing they do make sense, I'm gonna kill them" later on, it's more of a drastic change than if you only did the main story. You could argue that this is actually a negative, but to me it only makes it even more tragic, and shows how hurt he is. And it's also not something it's ignored. Even on his crazy murderous rampage, when you revisit Pascal's village after the attack with him, he's clearly moved by it, it gets to him even in his altered state.

EDIT: They dropped the ball not addressing the shut-in, though. I understand there are budget limitations, and maybe they just didn't have time to do it, but then at least hide him in the game, you can still see his icon and even attack him from the outside. It would be kind of an awesome moment if you could go there with 9S, hack the door to unlock him, and then he would probably be fucked anyway because Yoko Taro, but it would still be cool.
