Wonder Woman Review thread

hot hot hanuman-on-man action
Regardless of how this reviews (I've watched it, and it's as good as people are saying it is)...

The real Geoff Johns/DC Films division doesn't begin in earnest until Aquaman.

I don't know much about Jenkins, and other than the now dead Affleck (but resurrected by Reeves) Batman film, James Wan is the one I'm most excited about. I pray he brings his horror vibes. The man can tell a story.

Aquaman by Wan is a great idea from the start - the one film I think could really take advantage of the dour nature of the DCEU.

Oh great now reviews too are going to undermine the movie by forcing themselves to bring up the other films. Is it too hard to call it a good movie on its own ? Instead of making it sound like it's only good because the rest is bad.

That's what happens when you build a cinematic universe. How does the film sit in comparison to what's been establushed.

this is dceu gaf, where there's more hype for the review thread than the actual movie

True. This is also anti-DCEU GAF. If Wonder Woman gets under a 7 the Wonder Woman thread will span many many pages, talking about how DC shit the bed, reboot is needed, etc etc. If the movie does well, we'll see a fairly decent length thread with mostly positive impressions and an occasional hater.

Well you judge a movie by how it stands on its own. I mean you don't need to have watched MoS, BvS, or SS to watch or understand what's going on in Wonder Woman.

The only way it's acceptable is if they say something like. "This movie stands clear and above the rest."

Criticism is about context, so why wouldn't it be judged in the context DC has gone to all this trouble of creating? It doesn't need to be reviewed exclusively based on the other films, but all but eschewing comparisons to the movies that directly relate to this one is completely nonsensical.

Ignore it ? No they shouldn't.
But making it into the headline ? You are reviewing a movie, not an cinematic universe. If the one thing you want to put in your headline is that it doesn't suck like the rest, you are clearly showing it's only good because the rest is bad, and that the movie on its own is not that good.

That's...not at all what that means

Pulling for finally having a good DC film after a loooooong time.

That said I'm still stinging from those good alien covenant reviews for what to me was a steaming turd.

Who's the villain in this anyway?
Hitler with the spear of destiny? Ares?
(spoilers are for logical villains based off the comics and the era, I have no idea who it is).
Lego Batman was pretty good.

I'll post the chalkboard one last time.

We did it.

Just doublechecking:

We're at 10 pages (50ppg, of course) off two posted reviews?

This... this isn't really about the quality of Patty Jenkins' film, is it.

The GAF pecking order is:

DCEU >= Star Wars > MCU > Everything else in terms of generating conversation based on what I have seen.

Still really bummed out about whedon being on batgirl

The prospect of that cornball writing major dialogue scenes involving the batfamily worries me. Hopefully he reins in his usual tendencies

Super hyped for Batman tho with that director and Bruce/Alfred. I think moving from Affleck to Reeves was an improvement in this case for a comic book blockbuster

Okay, but what has that to do with Wonder Woman. You are way too focused on Whedon.

I really wish game 1 of the NBA finals wasn't on Thursday night. Wonder Woman will have to wait til Friday ; _ ;
Always pick the sporting event over the movie. You'll only get to see an NBA Finals Game once over a movie that will be around for a few months and then some when it comes out on Blu Ray/streaming.

Was getting caught part of your plan?
It's just the calm before the storm, Robby. It's the anticipation, the wait.

I, personally, cannot wait for the standalone user threads that want to vocally announce and emphasize their opinion on the movie even though it's still out and we have an official thread for such a discussion.

I really, really hope they have Dick and Tim in the Batfleck film.

Would save the DCEU for me, even if it sucks.

Anyway go Wonder Woman! At the very least we need more female led action films to be good and make money.

Is it just me or is TFA really similar to ANH

Oh yeah, that one's always fun.

The conspicuously inconspicuous way they front like they weren't just in the other thread and didnt' start a brand new one out of frustration the stream didn't stop flowing the second they kicked a pebble into it.

"Hey guys, I just got out of (movie x) and maybe it's just me, I don't know, help me out, I haven't seen anyone else discussing this, but am I the only one who..."

am I the only person who thinks Wonder Woman is better than all the Marvel movies?

Seriously guys am I the only one?

Like...is there one person other than me?

I FEED ON VALIDATION

I'd slide Fast and Furious and non-Marvel Studios Marvel between Star Wars and MCU.

Some of you are big FF fans, but the films don't really generate conversation on the same scale as the others here. Especially when we aren't in the vicinity of a new release. This review thread is already longer than F8's and nothing has happened yet.

I wouldn't be surprised if we spent more posts talking about BvS in 2017 than we have talking about F8 in the entirety of the OT and OT community boards.

ETA on Max Landis calling Diana a Mary Sue.

That's true. But there will be more posts talking about BvS in 2017 than any movie released in 2017. Well, except The Last Jedi.

The real kicker is that all those kinds of threads can immediately be closed by the very resounding, empirical answer of "No."

EDIT: beaten by batman

That is really quite depressing considering the Cannes film festival thread didn't even get to page 2.

Gaf really isn't a good place to discuss cinema unless you are interested in superheroes, Star Wars or Nolan.
