All I have to say is it's kinda funny how Killing/Guns/Violence = awesome. Swearing/a bit of lewdness = BAD

Like, come on. That's kind of an unfair double standard. No, I'm not trying to start a debate nor am I telling EZA how to do things. And I feel this way about a lot of media, not just EZA. Still it makes me disappointed.

Anyway, I love EZA even though I don't agree with their choices 100% of the time. But that's what love and respect is about, right?

They are actually kind of two different things in this context

EZA stream violence in games all the time (as most games are violent by nature) via their lets plays but really like I had already said, I'm not interested in starting any arguments.though touché on the Brad closing trademark speech!

Now, it's times for me to listen to TTE so I can clear my head.

We also stream games with lots of cursing. Not quite the same thing as doing it ourselves in either case.

Sure, you can see it that way, a product of the standard american puritan ethics that seem so distant to other part of the worlds (especially for us Europeans). But I think that the refrain from swearing here is a self-imposed constraint to try and be more articulate and thoughtful in their own expression.

It is true though that, compared to other media, mainstream videogames portrait violence/killing more frequently and with a more liberal attitude. At E3 we see the audience applaud decapitations and dismemberment. We know what the crowd is cheering for (the promise of high level interactivity?) but I can attest that outsiders are weirded out by these showings.

Even other allies roll their eyes when Huber talks about "feeling the kill", maybe that's a bit too much...

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
man that doomfist trailer jones was roughhh

Yeah, I kinda wish it hadn't come back. They're going at these trailers in the weirdest ways. It's one thing to critique flow and editing, but "Why isn't this trailer telling me a whole feature length story!!" is nonsense best kept at the tip of the tongue.

Well, one being negative (or positive) doesn't stop the other from being independently negative. These things don't have to be a contest or something.

Violence is a bit of an interesting one with regards to games though. In general, I think it has propogated well because video games generally need a conflict; Mario vs Goombas, Spyro vs sheep, Lui Kang vs Shang Tsung. Games are visual, games require some sort of challenge, and that lends itself toward a certain sort of innate violence being a de facto standard (eg, even many non-violent games like Tetris have you destroying something that's perceived as an enemy). Certain games double down on that conflict and try to make your victories over enemies more brutal, satisfying, final, etc etc.

Imo it was cute and whatever when the tech behind it was simpler; Doom or Mortal Kombat 3 are violent, but look so video-gamey that it doesn't seem like a big deal. More recent violent games like GoW 3 or MKX, watching the bloodlust sort of unsettles me. But that threshold is different for every person I'd imagine.

I don't know how much this is on the Allies (maybe it's because of an expanded fanbase sending in questions) but I feel like last couple months or so's L&R questions have just been straight up dull/no effort. To clarify, I don't mean the Allies' answers have been no effort - but I don't think they've been getting much to work off of.

I remember they used to be quite thoughtful and unique but recent ones have just been so... meh. I can't really put my finger on it.

Yup! I was going to comment about that, but thought I'd get no support here.

I don't know, I've always enjoyed L&R and loved the new L&R episode too. Haven't been a big fan of the last two games they've played from Patrons. And in the main podcast regarding news, my least favorite topics are future speculation with hopes and wishes.

Bought NHL 2011 and was hit by whatever the fuck those controls were supposed to be. Last EA Sports game was basically FIFA 2003 & 2004 and man, those sure did change lmao. Needless to say, My interest for Hockey was birthed and died the very same day.

I'm not totally up on my LotR lore, I'm guessing Shelob doesn't normally turn into a woman in the books/movie? That does seem like an odd change/ability to add.

Edit: But... I also think that trailer is pretty cool and I'm slightly more interested in the game than I was before seeing it.

Yeah, Shelob is a spider, no human form whatsoever. Quite an odd change. I don't mind though, it's neat to see alternative takes on fiction.

That said...the game looks very rough overall

That's why they've also included the "NHL 94" controls ever since NHL 09. A simple 2 button system (plus thumbstick). On PS3 (and I assume PS4) all you needed to use were X and O and the left thumbstick. I always turned off penalties (especially offside and icing) and that made for a very fun time.

Shelob is descended from Ungoliant, a corrupted Maiar of enormous power who even Morgoth was wary of. Who's to say she can't adopt pleasing forms as Sauron could?

Going by the trailer it seems like they wanted to give Shelob a more prominent role and probably decided to go with a human form to have her convey more emotion and character.

Lore wise even Shadow of Mordor was off the rails, so it doesn't really make much difference in that regard.

Maybe she could, maybe she also had the power to teleport and just decided to never do it. It's just a fairly random thing to apply to an established character (well not too random since they're using it as a shortcut to make the character communicate with others). Like I said though I'm fine with it, they're free to go wild. These are just comic book games.

Or maybe she isn't transforming or teleporting at all and it's just a glamor she has cast to deceive Talion. My point is Tolkien was very cagey about ever setting forth rules about his world and often rethought things and contradicted himself across many years of writing. It's a bit of a pet peeve of mine when people get precious about his work and complain about depictions that aren't directly sourced from the text. All told Monolith, and Snowblind before them, have treated the works of Tolkien with incredible love and care, in my opinion.

It's not being precious about Tolkein. It would be a very noticeable change in any work of fiction if one of the characters literally changed species. Or gained the ability to cast deceptive magic, either way. I don't see anyone here upset about it, but it's obviously something that stands out and is going to be acknowledged.

Correction! Ungoliant wasn't a Maiar, she was a being that came from the darkness when the world was created. She was always described as a spider, like her name literally means "Dark Spider," so no, I don't believe she can adopt different forms. If I remember right, that was something Sauron actually specialised in, which is why he was called "Sauron the Deceiver."

The game is dumb as fuck. I struggle to see the love and care you think they have for Tolkien's work, not when there's far more interesting areas of that world that are dying to be explored but they're too busy coming up with this fanfic bullshit.

I agree but at this point I'd prefer they just dive head-first into fanfic absurdity. The primary appeal of the first game was dumb-foundingly bone-headed, treating gamers like neanderthal dogs with a primal urge to simple watch the same beheading on repeat for 30 hours (an approach I would have found disturbingly over-cynical in such a way that it cast a bizarre light on the creators... except there are people who liked it, so I guess the disdain they cast onto gamers through their product was not out of line).

Rather than repeat that, I say go all in on the cheesy bastardizations of Tolkein lore and at least turn it into a wild ride. They already have an orc whose main draw is a sense of humor worthy of a Marvel movie, so it seems promising they're headed in that direction.

Just showed my girlfriend several episodes of Don's Discount Gaming. She loved them as much as I did, and is looking forward to future episodes. She was wondering why Don doesn't have a show on the Travel Channel. I know, right?

We need more of Don's ramblings through his troubled past and his unfulfilled passion for the bride of Pinbot.

Come on Allies! More Don!

Sure, I guess. And I would rather they go nuts with all the dumb stuff and be open with their fanfic nonsense than make up rubbish and pretend it fits in with the lore. If you're going to make a dumb game, you may as well embrace it.

I just wish they would've been more ambitious than just doing a repeat of the previous game except this time they have a bunch of a wacky fanfic nonsense thrown in. I'd love to have seen them expand heavily on what they got right with the previous game and make it about more than just the Nemesis system and killing orcs. But I guess I shouldn't expect that much from WB, I'm still annoyed they never delivered on the potential of a proper open world Batman game.

Oooh, the talk about Shelob made me remember how distracting it was in the cinema when a kid started crying at the Shelob scene. The nan didn't even take him out of the theater for the film being too frightening for the kid. So it went on for some time.

Nice, Ian's Swords cardgame seems to be funded on kickstarter with 5 days to go.
Hopefully they also hit the stretchgoal.
Really cool to hear, grats to Ian and everyone else working with the game.

Edit: Unrelated to this, I rarely watch EZA stream games. But with the upcoming Xcom 2 expansion I would love some of them streaming it together. The catch is that they would customize their squad with EZA members, it will create a fun narrative for the viewers. I remember them doing something similar to this back at GT, where they were showcasing the first XCOM with a developer I think and some of the GT crew as squad members. If it would be a group stream, it could even be fun if everyone gets to control the character created after them.

I've been replaying Xcom 2 myself (playing it right now!) and Huber is really putting in work with his shotgun, but even more with his axes!

Does anyone remember on which Frametrap Ben talked about Dragon Quest 7 on 3DS?
Cause I wonder if he mentioned the performance at all. I bought the game yesterday and I'm not one who is bothered too much by subpar performance, but boy DQ7 plays kind of terrible tbh. Framepacing issues everywhere, huge drops during combat and generally unresponsive menus :(

DQ8 ran much much better on 3DS...

Played on 2DS and had no noticable probs with the performance.

Did you play the physical or download version? Some games run better when downloaded iirc.

Edit: Disabling wifi apperently helps with performance, going to try that later when I get home

The first question about used games is very dystopian, also very EZA.
I agree with Damiani that game overs are obsolete for most games that aren't run-based.

Why would they want an Assassin's Creed in 80s New York?? Like the appeal of the series is uncommon historic locations. I could see a case if it was a fish out of water situation (bug in the Animus brought an Assassin to the "future") and it still plays like an Assassin's Creed game (climb skyscrapers with your bare hands, jump onto a truck filled with hay).

I don't want any 16-bit game ever. Even if I wanted my 2D games pixelated I want them to be full of color and as high res as they can be.

Good for him. I was a bit worried when I didn't see him reach out to board game websites/personalities.

Since the games are mentioned in the description you can just search on Youtube (Frame Trap + game name).

I pretty much agreed with them and probably would have gone farther. People should never feel obligated to give their money away to corporations. It's the corporations' responsibility to earn your money by making good products and marketing them well; it's not your responsibility to give them more money than you need to.

In other news I started Berserk the other day. Just 10 eps in but woah, I love this so far!

If theres any company that deserves your money, it's EA and Madden.

Resident Evil 7 should only be bought for $5 at most, used.

I think that the discount system really eases the pain of buying a game at launch, whether you're Amazon prime or Best Buy, in my case I'm Amazon. No matter what you're not paying $60 at launch.

I pick and choose games which to wait for, although I could certainly be more patient. I bought FF15 at launch, haven't played it. I bought Civ 6 at launch deluxe edition so that was like $80 because I was just way too excited, although I haven't played it much.

Also I also think the fear of missing out is a lot of reason why games end up being bought at launch for me, fear of being spoiled as well which is why I grabbed Horizon Zero Dawn sooner than I had initially wanted to.

"Deserve" has got nothing to do with it.
Like Jones said, they must've done something the others didn't, and that's the value proposition worth 60$, the others didn't meet.

I also rarely buy games at 60€, though i have no second guessing on it, personally.

Buying games day one new for $60/$48 for me since im a Best Buy GCU member isn't a big deal unless you're a collector. Once I complete the game, I trade it in and rarely do I end up spending more than $20 on a game after trading it in.

Also, adding in the $10 pre-order bonus for Best Buy and at $38 on day one is a steal for me personally. Even though they didn't really mention it in the podcast, I'll never understand why anyone would be against pre-ordering a game especially if there's a $10 bonus attached to it simply because once the game comes out, if you don't want it anymore, you can just pick it up and return it at the same time or not pick it up to where the amount goes back to your account/cc/gc.

Of course, I can understand with Amazon people not wanting to take chances since they would have to ship the game back but in general, I have never understood being against pre-orders because it's not like you're literally stuck with the game and purchase.

In addition to the $10 bonus (not every game has this but about 5 of them out of about 15 or so are on my list for October/November) for pre-ordering at Best Buy and GCU discount is one main reason - BACKLOG.

I'm down to a three game backlog with none of the games being 2017 and I want to keep it that way. The longer you wait, the less the chances are that you'll end up playing the game or at least that's how I see it.

To each their own but for me, if it's a game im buying 100%, it's an easy decision to pre-order and pick up on day one.
