Star Trek Discovery: SDCC 2017 Trailer

Jeff Russo is doing the music? Gross. Hype massively deflated.

(Although the trailer did that all by itself, honestly. Very bland and dull.)

Visually looks great and the cast is cool but not feeling it, to be honest. Just not what I personally want out of Trek. This is like if DS9 started with the Dominion War without giving us all that time to get to know the characters. It's just generic sci-fi action stuff. I understand why you go down that road for the films, but for a TV series, I just want something way different.

I wasn't familiar with his work, so I'm bummed to hear it doesn't get the jb stamp of approval.

I thought the trailer was great, though. Well, maybe not great. Good.

If DS9 started as slow today as it did back then it would have been cancelled before the dominion war even started. TV shows can no longer afford the luxury of three shit seasons followed by a couple of good ones. Anyone who cares about Trek should know that it needs to survive before it can thrive, so shitting on it because it's not like early ds9 of tng is a really weird complaint all things considered.

He mostly does ambient, sound design scores, like Legion, Fargo and The Night Of. Basically, not a sound that I particularly want in Star Trek. But at least judging by the trailer, it wouldn't surprise me if they want music that fades into the background anyway.

It'll live or die for me based on the bits between all the shouting and running and ramming ships into each other.

Y'know, the Star Trek bits. If any.

That's obviously not the type of thing they'll show in a trailer, but after putting faith into the presence of some Star Trek in Beyond, and coming out disappointed, I'm not going to hold my breath.

Budget is great, but I won't be convinced that I'll approve of the direction until I watch it.

Just talking about what I personally want out of Trek. I understand the logistics of what Trek needs to be to get play time in modern media. It's just not what I want.

I cant help but feel this is being set up to fail. I would definitely watch this on TV but there is 0% chance I will sign up for CBS all access.

Ahh, gotcha. Haven't watched any of those, although I'm a bit intrigued by Fargo.

I'm on the fence here. I mean, there is a 100% chance I sign up for CBS All Access, I should note. There basically always was. But ah, in terms of the odds this was a wiser move -- I don't know. I'd rather it were on Netflix internationally, of course. But as for television? I'm not sure which CBS-tagged station would do well with it. Certainly not CBS itself. It'd last a single season.

Well that's fair. I know what you mean. Still, my worst fear would be bringing it back and it getting cancelled killing Trek forever. I'd rather get the ball rolling again and see where the franchise can go from there.

We are gonna sign for the CBS All-Access because my boyfriend is a huge Trekkie but it kinda seems like they are going out of their way for it to flop by paywalling it behind something that is obviously going to crash and burn.

yes. they are spending millions of dollars just to intentionally make it fail.

CBS themselves definitely seem to #believe, if you take my meaning. I think their enthusiasm here is genuine. They want it to do well because they want All Access to do well because they want in on the streaming game.

Whether that happens remains to be seen.

I'll wait till the end of the season and get a month of service, no way I'm paying for anymore than that. I imagine that's what most people will do.

Well, from the looks of it we'll at least get some decent space battles.

As for the rest... it really is caught up against the strange dissonance of supposedly being so close to the original series. It creates an odd background for the show to exist in while considering it. If it were its own thing I'd say it looks at least kinda interesting, even if the trailer is kinda incredibly vague as to what's actually going on.

Still trying to maintain my optimism even after Fuller left.

Hopefully the groundwork was laid for them to follow.

And damn, that what's the budget on this thing? Looks fucking great visually.

I just don't think Star Trek is enough to make people jump in. Now if they were truly forward thinking and had decided to keep a show like Person of Interest alive on the platform instead of ending it I might have been more eager to sign up.

It continues to looks phenomenal. I just hope that the actual story/content will come close to matching the production values.

Its looks great visually for a tv series. Could be a trailer for an Abrahmverse movie though, that does not inspire confidence.

Yeah, I don't think Star Trek alone is going to be a "system-seller", so-to-speak. But it'll make some waves. Whether those waves are as big as Moonves seems to expect is a totally different question. All Access also has The Good Fight and numerous other shows in pre-production, though, I believe. It's certainly trying.

His work on Legion was incredible.

I skimmed the soundtrack and was bored to tears but it does sound like music that works much better in context with trippy visuals. Other people have told me that he breaks more into thematic orchestral work in Fargo so I'm going to keep an open mind.

(After all, I was disappointed by Bear McCreary's work on BSG in its first season until that show opened up and he was given the opportunity to write more lush music.)

If there is one element to BSG that is absolutely improved season-over-season, it is the soundtrack, yeah.

Outside of the Klingons, I like the look. Looks like they changed the design of Discovery, which is a plus.

I'm sold on the cast, it's really going to come down to the writing on this for me.

I hoping this turns out well, but I'm very nervous about this being on the CBS steaming service. I'm a huge trekkie but I don't think I can justify $8/month to watch one show, I know I can't be alone here.

please be on Netflix in 4k.... looks amazing

Does CBS All Access even support 4k? it would be hilariously sad if the rest of the world gets 4k and the US doesn't.
