Is PUBG a GotY contender?

It's brilliant and represents the dream of what a Battle Royale is (which was a long desired concept). So of course, it nails its vision.

Don't get mad but people said the same thing about DayZ, now look at it.
An Early Access can't be a GOTY contender, it's not finished.

In a year where we got Automata, RE7, Gravity Rush 2, THREE Yakuza games, *barely audibly grumbling "and persona 5"*? No, I don't think so. And I play PUBG a lot.

saying gravity rush 2 is a GOTY contender is way more outrageous than PUBG you know

I don't personally think so, but it's not a hill I'm going to die on. I just think this year has been too strong to give it up to a game with numerous bugs, one map, and still isn't feature complete.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is a movie I enjoyed very much, but I wouldn't nominate it for best picture.
It's more telling that a game with one map, numerous bugs, and not yet feature complete is easily in contention to be considered one of the best games of the year

It is, and it's going to win some GOTY award for sure (Giant Bomb's is a lock, if you ask me).

I like it when I'm playing it with a friend, but, personally, I think it's way too unpolished and missing in several key features to be considered even a good game as it stands. It's Early Access, sure, but if it's going against a "finished" game like Zelda, Nier or Call of Duty, it needs to be measured by the same standards. You wouldn't give Activision a pass if they released a game missing so many pieces.

Not to mention the shitshow they started when they went back on their word about cosmetics and crates during the Early Access period. Nasty stuff.

I think 95% of what makes PUBG good in the eyes of the community is its capacity for emergent gameplay. Personally, I would say that there are several games this year that outclass PUBG in many and more important ways. Zelda, for example, is also a game with massive amounts of potential for emergent gameplay... but being a singleplayer game it doesn't lend itself so well as PUBG for streaming and generating a zeitgeist.

I'm not voting if it isn't eligible. The whole concept of 1.0 is just so stupid. Many boxed games released in an unfinished state but because they are in a box then they're somehow given preferential treatment.

It is meaningless.

Persona is one of my favorite series but it has a ton of problems. It's on my list for sure but that fact that people like me have problems with it doesn't give it good chances.
Yea this year the competition is fierce. The Goty list is growing and we're not done yet.

if they release the stuff they said they would (vaulting/ 2 more maps) yeah, easily.

FPS servers coming next week, I think that's going to elevate the game to the next level. It will be a very different and even more amazing experience.

I've had less bugs and more fun in PUBG than I have in any of Bethesda's stable of GOTY winners, so I don't see why not.

This is true, but when the developer themself say it is EA, then it should contend for GOTY.

I believe any game made before 1997 is "essentially cave man art."
I think so. It's priced right and plays unlike any other game (not counting the kill of the hill or ARMA mod). It runs like ass on PC so I hope the console ports are good.

What is it with GAF and pretty much putting every japanese games on a pedestal, you're even listing GR2 as more worthy of a GOTY which is laughable tbh.

One of the only games I can happily watch a three hour stream of and be thoroughly entertained.

So it's certainly in my top 5

It's not easily in contention for me though. I guess it depends on your criteria. Like, I had more fun with Guardians 2 than I probably will with any other film this year. But I don't think it excelled in any one aspect more than some other movies, and certainly not in the general criteria we judge films on (writing, acting, editing, etc). I just thought it was a ton of fun.

So if I'm making a list of my favorite movies, ones I had the most fun with? Then sure, but that's a super personal list. I also consider myself a big fan of film as a craft, and I want to give other films their due as well, and that's a different list.

So it's just a matter of how we feel the end list should be gauged, and I guess that would be up to everyone when they cast a vote. Me personally, I can decouple the idea of "PUBG is one of my favorite games of the year" with "PUBG might not be the best game of the year", I think those are two separate topics. Some others may feel differently, and that's fine.

There was someone in a thread arguing that PUBG is really popular but it isn't a big deal and that it will end up like other games like hearthstone/league of legends (LOL).

There are a lot of people on Neogaf who are very out of touch when it comes to games that are outside their wheelhouse. If it isn't their cup of tea, it may as well not exist.

If anything PUBG to me is reason enough to revisit any dated GOTY criteria that disqualifies "early access" games. EA isn't what it was 5 years ago, and considering the state of the modern games industry, and how so many "complete" games ship in what is essentially an early access game, it seems silly to disqualify a game that people are enjoying and spending hundreds of hours playing from game of the year discussion because of semantics.

i read this entire thread and still have no idea what "PUBG" stands for or what it is other than "a game," so i'm gonna vote no.

All I'll say is if PUBG wins goty over something like Zelda or Horizon gaf will go absolutely crazy and riot. Trust me, I've been here a while.

Def my GOTY now just because I want to see Zelda, Horizon, etc fans go crazy. And since its from a indie dev (or rather a non AAA dev) as well.

It'll probably is Giant Bomb's GotY if they apply the logic they applied to Hitman last year.

And if you told me that any other game would be my main GotY contender in a year where BotW, Persona 5 or a new Mario releases, I would've called you insane. But here we are and PUBG is a game I can't stop playing and think about. Plus it is planed for a release this year.

A game release is something that has been muddled over the years anyway. Not only because of Early Access but also AAA games still receive updates or change over time.

By having arbitrary rules on what is eligible as an industry we encourage developers to rush their game out or simply slap 1.0 on it whenever is convenient to win awards and maximise sales when the game is hot.

It's not my GotY, but I can certainly see the argument for putting up there and think it definitely deserves to be at that tier IMO. While it is Early Access, if the game is already exhibiting that much quality right now, and not based on what it could potentially be, then I see no reason for it not to be nominated. Lots of the good Early Access games usually have the situation of "Well this idea is cool and it has some cool stuff right now, but it'll really get good once that other stuff down the line comes", but that stuff isn't in the game right now. Very little with PUBG do I hear "The game's gonna be great when X gets in!" There are features and content upcoming that people are looking forward to, but still everyone's enjoying the game right now as it is, which is quite a testament to it's quality when PU/Bluehole doesn't even consider it a completed game yet. They're really doing Early Access right with it, releasing a game that's fun now, and good now, while unfinished, while continuing to develop it and going up from there. It's not "Here's the game now, as it is, but it's gonna be cool when the Nazis riding dinosaurs get in!"

In my opinion, PUBG is among my top 4 for this year so far, which consists of these:

1. Breath of the Wild
2. Nier Automata
3. PUBG
4. Persona 5

I saw my nephew playing this game on his PC while I was visiting my sister.
I thought it was another unpolished ARMA mod because the graphic was so bad and outdated.
He explained to me he was hunting his friends, and it was exciting because others were also hunting for him.
Watched him played for a bit, and it was just like BF with uglier graphic.
I just nodded and walked away because all I saw was basically a boring game of hide and seek game of Death Match on a large map.

Am I missing something?
Am I too old for FPS now?
I don't see what is so exciting about playing an "open world" DM game.
I have played this type of game in the 90s, such as BF: VN.
Hunting Vietcons with 100s of players on a server. What is the difference?

This. I guess the OP couldn't be bothered to actually spell the entire name of the game. :(

Horizon has my vote, with Zelda Breath of the Wild coming in a close second at this point.

There is a good chance the bubble is going to burst on this game before it leaves Early Access. Especially with the response to microtransactions.
