UK: Destiny 2 is year's biggest retail launch, but retail down 58% from Destiny 1

Get ready for more loot boxes
Exactly. When I saw the real money for loot boxes and single use shaders, I knew Bungie was forecasting below sales expectations. They know they have a very loyal fan base so they know they can extract more money from them and push that envelope.

Call of Duty has been doing this for years as they see their sales tailspin. Fewer and fewer players, but more revenue per player with their add on sales like DLC, micro transactions, loot boxes etc.

I mean it was obvious it would not reach D1 numbers, D1 hype was insane even on GAF, we had like 3-4 OTs full on launch week. D2 OT is still in its first interation.

There isn't anything like it in the market except for Warframe.
They moved onto discord which wasn't even around when Destiny 1 launched.

How many OTs did the first one get? 20? 30? I doubt this game will ever get 3 lol. D1 was massive here.

It's hard for any game to get high thread usage due to Discord anymore. You can almost exactly plot when any community's thread churn slowed down to when they made a Discord.

Either way, this like cherrypicking layered upon cherrypicking. Console has never been strong in the UK, and it's retail numbers for an always-online game. lol.

Well, that's much lower than I expected. I hope it does well in the long run. I hit 20 and beat the main campaign, it's an extremely solid game.

It's a excellent campaign with a lackluster final boss battle. Let's see what the raid has in store for us.

I'd be in the dick
Surprised there was that much of a drop based on what Activision was saying about preorder numbers. I expected a bigger launch than D1. Digital doesn't make up that much of a difference.

And I find it encouraging that marketing alone can't sustain franchise sales, seemingly. You have to earn consumer trust by making a good game.
We've seen it time and time again, first with AC after Unity, then with Watch Dogs 2. We'll probably see it again with the Division 2,and potentially the reverse with a Rainbow Six Siege 2 if that ever gets made.
I'm loving Destiny 2, but I expected a drop due to wary gamers who were underwhelmed with vanilla Destiny 1 and dropped it, never to return. Expecting the same or better launch numbers for the sequel to a poorly (falsely?) advertised and content lacking game was a stretch IMO. Gamers that stuck with Destiny through the taken king are likely mostly back, but others who didn't experience the vastly improved loop of the later expansions (and who can blame them?) likely aren't chomping at the bit for the sequel.

Curious to see if there is some crow eatin´ to be done later this week:

The UK retail sales could be very misleading.

Not that surprising to me.
I bought the physical version, but in this case, just because it was cheaper.
I'm usually all physical, but Destiny is online only, so it doesn't has any extra worth to me, in physical format.
Maybe more people thought this way.

I don't know anyone that bought it physical and we all bought the first game physical. Anecdotal but I'm thinking the game did fine.

Yeah but you're the kind of person who posts on game forums, you aren't indicative of the mass market

not that I think itself going to bomb like, just keep seeing posts like this as though any of us represent the whole gaming market

Too bad it's not even lower. I love Bungie and I loved the gameplay of Destiny 1, but after all the shit they pulled with this game I was hoping it would bomb.

While it's clear it will still sell a ton I'll take they not matching the success of the first one.

Anecdotally, I'm definitely one of the ones who went into Destiny sailing on hype and then ended up not getting the game I thought I would be. I don't hate it, but I won't be coming back for seconds.

At this point, Anthem looks like it may deliver what I wanted from Destiny, but we all know to be wary of early showings by now.
Always keep your expectations in check especially with new IPs...

surely now we have Destiny bingo

Don't understand the mindset of someone that would rather see ruin than redemption. I'd take a good game over a bad one just for the sake of making a point.

Wanting games to bomb is something I never understand from any gamer.. Destiny us not gonna bomb.

I meant bomb after they pulled the same shit with D2.

Had they treated their fans properly I would be there day 0 with the collectors edition of D2 just like I did with destiny 1.

One, I don't care what kind of MTs are present in the game, there's simply no justification for wanting a game to fail unless it is AGGRESSIVELY terrible. Even then, these devs have families and careers and I still wouldn't want that. Garbage attitude.

Two, claiming this game is a bomb is hilarious.

The game won't bomb anywhere, despite wanting that I always knew that would be the case.

However it been down from the first is a great win in my book and I hope Bungie and Activision learn their lesson from this.

Your logic is still awful. Lots of good, talented folks worked long hours on this.games doing well is good for the industry. I bet you were OK with ms DRM with x1 though right?

What's the lesson here then? They made a much, much better game. It's the best week 1 so far this year. D2 will in all likelihood end up being one of the top 5 best selling games of the year.

I never said the game bombed. I said that I wanted it to bomb, but I knew it wouldn't.

But seeing the sales down is already a win. Perhaps now they can start doing right by their fans.

A win? Yikes. For one, we dont know its down overall. There is no lesson they need to learn here. D2 is far better than 1.

Saying Anthem looks like it will deliver is hilarious, we have seen nothing of that game. Plus its bioware.
Hence the rest of his sentence. He specifically mentions that he's wary of early showings.

Is that the only criteria? You can't want it to fail because of shitty business practices, like micro-transactions? What's the criteria for "AGGRESSIVELY terrible" - a game with a lot of bugs? Those people have families and careers too.

You loved the game but hope this one bomb? Why exactly. I know that microtransactions are shitty and i'm not defending them at all, but you can literally get everything in this game without spending a penny.

I am sure a good few people, like myself, are waiting to see what else Bungie pulls/messes around with before jumping in. Enjoyed D1 but many of the choices soured me a little. I love me some loot collecting, so I will probably grab it when they talk more about their dlc/GOTY editions later down the lane.

Expected that it would not shift the same number as D1 but it will still sell gangbusters.

Why speculate when there's a handy search function? Lukas may prefer Xbox, but he was pretty vocal about how their DRM was a bad decision that they'd definitely have to back peddle on. I remember his stance being that even though he preferred digital anyway, there weren't nearly enough positives to MS policies to outweigh the negatives. Cut the witch hunt horse shit. I disagree with his stance on wanting this game to bomb, but there's no reason to go all McCarthy on him for it.

Lol OK, so what was your point than? Saying Anthemn looks like it will deliver was the point of contention, the rest of his post was irrelevant.
If one were to just go off the gameplay demo, I can see why they would think it would deliver, as I thought it looked tremendous. The optimist in me thinks and hopes that it will, I'm a sucker for loot and even enjoyed Too Human :p, but I can understand why people have their doubts these days.

Like I said though, we're off topic so if you want to continue defending Destiny because someone mentioned being excited for another game then just PM me or him.
