How long does a policy need to exist before it becomes untouchable? SS and such have come under attack and those attacks resulted in electoral losses. I remember similar sentiment surrounding Obamacare after his second election and the courts upheld the ACA. I suppose it hasn't been repealed yet, but this feels a lot closer than SS privatization under the Bush years for example. How long does the ACA need to exist before morons protest with sign proclaiming "keep government out of my Obamacare"

I presume they'd basically have to grow up with it to get that effect.

The huge problem with Obamacare politically is that it puts people in Medicaid and private insurance, often using state-run programs to do so. Those people don't know they're in Obamacare.

Also this.

Well you're forgetting one key difference between other redistributive policies and the ACA: they weren't passed by a black man. So the answer is probably never.

So it would seem the success of progressive legislation depends on how long it can survive the initial attack, and whether the program is something everyone realizes they're being helped by.

That's not very comforting lol

Isn’t that part of the reason why Kennedy in the House introduced and amendment to forbid funds to be used for single payer

That'll be the next way they try to prevent it from happening for sure. Remember, "states rights come first, except when it's something we don't like." Not dissimilar to preventing cities from enacting liberal policies.

That said, as mentioned above people don't realize ACA also benefited them indirectly in terms of minimum coverage, preventative care, profit/spend ratios for companies and so forth. They think it's some specific plan on the exchange, one they don't have, not realizing all the minute changes that go into the ACA as a whole.

Material benefits.

Never having to pay for a medical expense.

Obamacare as you point out was hidden. Not seeing increases or having more protections is a lot different than going to the doctor and not paying a dime.

Problem is, for a lot of Americans, health insurance is kind of an invisible thing. They get it through work and don't think too hard about the real costs because they're shielded from them.

Until they change jobs or get fired/position is eliminated. Stupid fucks.

Manafort offered to give Russian billionaire 'private briefings' on 2016 campaign

Wapo Link

Seems highly inappropriate!

And that's why the reports said it was "unclear" if there was collusion or whatever. Manafort is smart enough to call it a 'private briefing' and do it offline; but dumb enough not to realize the power of circumstantial evidence.

Thought we were done with a blatant racism but folks in the 21st century have to punch Nazis in the face.

Perhaps this is white supremacy last hurrah for a generation?

On the other hand, abortion is eternally in peril, as long as Christians exist and vote.

Dear friends have I told you about the corruption of THE CLINTON FOUNDATION yet today?

Remember, Manafort spent the last decade or so working exclusively in former Soviet republics.

His tradecraft is probably not that hot.

I mean, he used to be able to kill anyone who would even think about releasing an article like this. That's not a good breeding ground for stealth.

Not weapons-grade oppoium, but I'll take it

It's got Deripaska's name in there though, another shady mofo we ain't heard that much of in news for a while.

I wonder if there was a reason for that...

Remember when I said earlier this week I thought we were over due for Oppo droppos?

Certainly laying downt he narrative that the GoP conspired with Trump and Russia, once manafort got the thumbs up from russia, the GoP altered there platform on ukrain russia at the RNC days later.

No one's going to jail until they can nail Trump to the wall. Reportedly Mueller's treating this like a mob investigation, so when the arrest warrants start getting handed out they'll grab everyone all at once.

It certainly fits the timeline to a T. I imagine Mueller's already got proof of this or he's looking to squeeze it out of Manafort. We'll see in the coming days I guess.

How the fuck is anyone this stupid about an illegal conspiracy

If the illegal activity you're going to engage in would never normally be investigated, let alone prosecuted, why would you care? People only cover their tracks if they're worried about being caught, and being caught implies someone is trying to catch you. Without Trump winning the election, firing Comey, and Mueller getting appointed, I don't know that any of this would have ever seen the light of day.

You see the same kind of thing play out in corporate/financial fraud all the time; just look at the leadup and fallout of the '08 financial crisis. It was a secret to everybody and nobody cared.

Won't stop picking the right nation
This is an underrated aspect of the healthcare debate and why I'm surprised more insurance companies aren't fighting harder against it. Perhaps that's because the argument is a little abstract, but it seems obvious to me that by creating a more dysfunctional healthcare system the Republicans would pave the way for a more radical solution. Not only would it become the central issue of the 2018 and 2020 elections (besides the unpopularity of Trump himself), but the Democrats could reasonably argue that the strategy of wooing the insurance industry is inadequate to the task.

okay, to everyone calling manafort stupid.

Manafort is not unlike slater.

at the end of the day they know they need to look out for themselves, so they will have evidence they save as an attempt to buy there freedom when the feds come.

it's worked for them in the past, but this time its not going to save them.

I only vaguely remember this episode of Saved by the Bell.

You have to remember, normally working with Russia means you can get your opponents and detractors permanently silenced, now working with Trump and Russian from the US election side is different. And probably not his usual work.
