German Federal Elections 2017 |OT| Electing the new leader of the free world

SPD in the opposition means Gabriel can finally take that cushy Russian oil job. Good riddance.
This campaign has been shameful from CDU and SPD. There was not one real topic that was passionately fought for, not one...

Let's hope (lol) this will put an end to the "economic anxiety" nonsense excuse. Germany's economy is the best it's been in 20 years, yet the far right is thriving.

It could've been a lot worse. This is still pretty bad.

It's fucking horrific and proves that the far right tide sweeping the western world hasn't receded. Farage, Le Pen, Putin, Trump and all the rest of these ultra-nationalistic dickheads will hoot and howl in delight, proclaiming this as another nail in the coffin of the post-war international world order.

Stop it with the hyperbole and the fearmongering.
Come on...

people will feel more comfortable attacking foreigners or germans not looking german. have you seen what some pegida people were saying to foreigners? i had a personal experience where an old women told me that i will be gased to death soon, while i was waiting for a bus (im german but i dont look like one) .people like that will feel like they can do whatever they wish now.

I'm okay with Jamaika. AFD will get nothing done anyway, just as in most state parliaments and they will get the full oppposition of all other parties. When people see they won't get through with their program they will crash hard in 1-2 years.

Germany joined the rest of Europe, it's expected. The new wave of xenophobe political movements are a force of real power now.

Guess there is a specter haunting Europe, the specter of neo-fascism.

Poverty in Germany is real. GDP numbers don't tell you everything about the well being of citizens. Look at the US lol

This election kind of striking a blow to the “Germany strong and stable and resistant of the far right” takes we’ve been endlessly seeing since Brexit and trump.

Again: Calm down. This isn't comparable to Le pen, farage, Putin, Trump because it's 13%, not 50 or more.

No, I don't think so.

Look at Sweden, the Swedish Democrats (same as AfD more or less) got in the last election 13%, now they are looking at 18-20%.

As long as the refugee crisis is ongoing they will gain from that.

You have all those fascists from WW2 living amidst other folks, for decades they are poisoning the newer generations, and this is the result.

It technically is since it's much smaller than all other far-right movements in the world but it's still a big blow for country itself to have far-right have some sort of presence in bundestag since 1930s

Yup, no surprise there. I hope politicians finally get off their asses and address the issues that made AfD this big.

With the difference that the AfD is not the governing power in Germany. 13% is bad, but nothing like a trump presidency.

This result isn't anyhwere near as bad as those two tho?

It's shameful and upsetting without doubt, but it won't shatter german society.

I don't see why. It's not a great result, but a far shot from any other countries recent elections.

With all other parties opposing them? Pretty much nothing.

Agree to an extent, but it’s definitely a warning that the generally accepted analysis of things is a bit simplistic. Kind of unfair comparing 2 way referendums/presidential votes to a multi party election, also.

afd openly says that germany should be proud of german soldiers in ww2.. i mean wtf.

I meant to include French and Austrian elections with that statement. We're far from that. (SneakEdit: Excluded the Dutch, their party apparently had 13,1%)
