I still can't believe that it's not known if it is R or not. I don't care if there is director's cut or not. Die Hard 4 had DC too.

I thought it was already confirmed PG13 with some bullshit R cut for dvd/blu.

oh nonononononono.

Hugely disappointing but expected I guess, I'm sure Ridley feels the same way. At least there will be some form of an R rated version though, if true that is.

if he felt the same way he wouldn't sign to direct two movies.

damn, this almost hurts.

I watched Aliens like 50 times if not more when I was a kid. I watched Alien and Alien 3 a lot less but still 10-20 times each one.

Then they made Alien 4.... Then Alien vs. Predator... Then this...

Alien 4 had some good stuff in it but the choice on a director was very, very wrong.

Wasn't KOH PG-13? I remember that was pretty brutal at times.

Why the long case?
It looks cool, but I do not understand why the pictures of the human technology look all fluorescent and modern.

I thought the computers in the original Alien looked like 70's peripherals. Sadface.

Pg 13?

How do you even do that? It will be terrible.

Not to bring down all the people that worship R Ratings, but the original Alien by todays standards would have a pg 13 rating if it was re assessed.
Far worse things have gotten R ratings.

The use of technology to create atmosphere in Alien cannot be topped. It's easily one of the best looking movies ever made.

I am just hoping in the new one, they do not make the technology resemble that of the kind in "Avatar".

I always imagined the original Alien timeline was sort of like Fallout's, split from our own. In the Alien Timeline around the 70's, technology all of the sudden received major breakthroughs, and though abilities such as space travel and cryogenics became available, the look of technology and design continued to look very 60's - 70's

Don't know if I want to see this in theaters if this turns out true. Would rather wait for final cut on Blu Ray. But the sound + IMAX in theaters...

Ugh fuck studios. Just nut up and give it R they act like this is some amateur first time director. I bet even Spielberg wouldn't be able to get a big budget R rated thing out there either.

Wonder if it's possible for Ridley Scott to sacrifice pay to ensure R rating or if that's still too little compared to potential lost PG kids.

And writer...and actors...and music...and special effects...

all this could be rectified if the director didn't bring some european cheesines into the movie. I like my Alien movies serious and grim.

Well, at least I have first three movies to watch again and over again
whoever tries to fix that sentence is a dick

What is interesting there were almost no "space horror" movies that were on the same level with Alien except Event Horizon, I think.

The trailer looks good. The only thing that I feel it didn't need was the cheesy "They were looking for Earth's beginning..." bit. It seemed unnecessary and almost cheapens the trailer.

What was the last big hit that Ridley Scott had, though? Robin Hood did poorly; Body of Lies was a joke; American Gangster was fairly decent, but nothing to write home about; A Good Year was a big bomb, as was Kingdom of Heaven and then there's Matchstick Men, which didn't do well at all, but had a small budget. He hasn't had a real hit since Black Hawk Down.

Combine that fact with the Alien series falling on extremely hard times and not doing shit over the past four movies, I don't blame 20th Century Fox for wanting to maximize profits here. The only way Predators got an R rated theatrical cut was because it was made on such a small budget.

subversus I understand what you're saying and I agree....but you like Indy 4 more than 2.

Indiana Jones Kingdom of the Crystal Skull over the pulp-masterpiece Temple of Doom.

you (and the 3 others) are insane for that so it makes sense that you'd like the 3rd Alien too dawg. I love Fincher but that film was a mess.

anyways. It's nice to see a lot of hype for a seemingly legit sci-fi film but I'm definitely holding it back big time, Scott makes some dank ass flicks 75% of the time.

Other than Event Horizon you might try Sunshine, dir. by Danny Boyle. The underrated American remake of Solaris is worth checking out as well if you have the inclination. Neither are full-on horror but they're both pretty tense and evoke a similar feel, I think. Eden Log is pretty interesting as well but even further of the mark as it's not in space.

Watched them both and I certainly agree, especially with Sunshine. Also we can add Moon to the mix but it's a bit too far.

Well, at least the genre does fairly well in videogames.

Forgot about Moon, that was a good one.

Yeah, coming up with an exhaustive list of Aliens-influenced games would be almost impossible!

Well, I wasn't thinking about Aliens-influenced games.

I was thinking about System Shock 2, Dead Space 1-2.

Moon's a stretch. I can only think of Sunshine tbh. I'm sure there are other lesser known ones out there though.

Yeah, Moon isn't even a thriller.

As for videogames I would add Dead Money DLC and Bioshock if they were in space setting because they are about the same - a survival in a bleak isolated environment + psychological thriller stuff.

Since most cinemas are digital by now, could they not just show two versions? Like after 11.00pm => R-rated version.

This doesn't seem like a completely terrible idea. I'm sure the logistics would eliminate it as an option though. Also, they need an extra incentive to buy the blu-ray.

I do not believe the MPAA allows one movie to have two ratings for a theatrical release. There are some rules regarding it. You can have a PG-13 cut and a R-rated Special Edition or Director's Cut, but you cannot run both at the same time. You have to end the theatrical run for one before you can start the next. And you have to clearly market and indicate the they are different products. Consumer confusion, etc.

That makes sense.

Whats the last big-budget R-rated movie anyone can think of? I think it's Watchmen, although bizarrely that easily could have been a PG-13 with the ending change, it was mainly an R due to Zack Snyder's slo-mo violence fetish.

I never heard any talk of that. Ridley's said he wants an R rated film, in any case.

Ridley also wanted to make Kingdom of Heaven a coherent movie the first time round.

Ridley also wanted to release Kingdom of Heaven Director's Cut in cinemas.

Ridley wants a lot of things. Fox doesn't give a fuck.

Sadly, I think you are right.

Anyway, for whom it might interest:

"Contrary to popular belief, MPAA ratings carry no force of local, state, or federal law anywhere in the United States. The MPAA's rating system is administered by the Classification & Ratings Administration, which is not a government agency. MPAA ratings only serve as a consumer suggestion by a group of corporate analysts. After screening films, their personal opinions are used to arrive at one of five ratings. Theater owners voluntarily agree to enforce corporate film ratings as determined by the MPAA, which in turn facilitates their access to new film releases."

I think Ridley Scott is the unluckiest director in Hollywood when it comes to cuts. I mean look at Blade Runner.
