Twisted Metal Demo Impressions

Prepare for disappointment. Twisted Metal has always been like this.

I should say, I didn't have fun playing offline at all. But online was fun as hell. That's where this demo (at least) really shines.

Don't know if I would say always. Maybe I need to revisit TM 1 & 2, but I don't remember their AI being so against the player. Black was pretty much like this though.

They actually can't damage each other. I was talon and I used the magnet to carry one of the AI cars, the other cars were still shooting at me but they were hitting the car I was carrying and it was doing no damage. Either the car took damage but it wasn't enough for me to notice or the AI seriously can't hurt each other.

Dang :\ oh well, what can you do. They shall die anyway. At least they don't steal my criminal when they bump me (Calling All Cars).

I love it so far, it's like a new Black, really fun. Fuck I am terrible at it though, I was really good at Black back in the day.

Could have sworn that was in one of the control configurations.

It's on the right stick, not the left. I'm used to the old TM2 control where forward, back, and left and right were all on the dpad, I also think Black was like that too. I'm getting used to it now, but I think it would help a nostalgic old codger like me if I could steer and gas on the same stick. No matter, I played a round earlier with Meat Wagon and was much better, finally wiped out all 6 guys.

Oh, it definitely wasn't as brutal as this demo, I'll give you that. But I don't remember the AI players ever killing each other. But hey, I could be mistaken. It's been years since I've played those old games.

This is really overwhelming. I'm really having to work at the controls. Even just charging a missile and turning around gets me flustered sometimes. Maybe this has to do with the AI though, they seem really aggressive.

what control scheme you using? id suggest racing its pretty solid controls

I mean for right now it is. Its strange for a demo to be this balanced.

But no one really knows what they are doing or where everything is, Its still really chaotic online so players are mostly able to go about doing what they like.. I don't know but maybe thats what gives it a sence of balance. Get what i mean?

The only time the AI in 2 would die is if they drove off a ledge in the NY level or fell down along with the falling ice chunks in the antarctic level. As I recall, they did very, very little damage to one another and never ever dealt final blows to one another.

Yay I managed to finish the offline bot match at least, getting back into the groove.

What is up with the display though. For both me and a friend it's got big black borders on it.

Thats true. But usually there is a glaring balance problem in multiplayer demos.

y'all should be ashamed

You can fix that in the options. :)

Yeah, I noticed, still odd though!

Also, fuck you Crimson Fury with your little Flame Thower thing. That is so annoying when you're trying to fight or escape and this little asshole walks up and just shoots red shit all over you.

Pretty much on the money. Fantastic game, the atmosphere is more like TM1/2 than Black, the gameplay is as awesome as ever.

Thank you Jaffe, you pulled it off

As a long time TM fan who loved played Black more than he can remember, I was ready to total disappointment with this demo.

I was so wrong

The controls are complex and perfect and feel right at home. The speed is SO GOOD. The graphics are nice, the map is AWESOME; huge and tons of secret areas all over. Everything about this game screams "screw 2012 dumbed down gaming for the masses. this is REAL arcade driving combat".

Pre-ordering day 1 thanks to this demo.

So good.

The ranked multiplayer will have a unlock system for cars and other things. But everything in splitscreen and unranked is already unlocked. I am not to sure about kill streak rewards but it seems you can only have one of those unlocks at a time. And since Jaffe is so dedicated to balance I don't they will have much impact.

Edit: is the bar with machine gun in the character select is where you sellect your upgrade because it that is the case then you can only have one thing at a time.

Got around to downloading this. I've been a huge of this series since I bought the original back in 1995 and have pretty much never stopped playing that game along with TM2 and TMB. So far so good, but I seriously doubt it'll top Black for me just based off a few design choices they made.

Gameplay wise it feels great. The controls work well and cars handle the way they should. The sense of speed and hidden areas in the map are really awesome. Dropping things like mines and shooting the freeze is quick and easy. Visually it's solid, the world is huge with lots of variety and the framerate is solid. Effects and artstyle wise it didn't impress me the way Black did when it came out, but overall it gets the job done.

Things I didn't like were the lack of characters with the focus on gangs, the metal soundtrack over original music, and the punch myself in the balls tough AI. The AI was tough at times in Black, but it was fun and beatable. This is just frustrating as they all gang up on you. However, having a few difficulty levels in the final game will solve this I'm sure, and Jaffe already stated the final game would be less brutal. So it's all good.

I can't connect online, so I'll have to wait on that. So far I like it for what it is. Will buy.

Got in a match of Nuke just now. I feel like I was doing something right, but whenever I was sacrificing the team leader at the launcher there were 2 or 3 guys hovering around it with none of my teammates helping out. Lack of an invite system is scary right now, it could be much better playing with a buddy but I won't know in this demo.

How's does dat feel feel compared to TM2?

Bigger- The challenge mode map (since I haven't played MP yet) is quite big, with some big interior areas, shortcuts, and a metric shit ton of destructible buildings.

Clean and fast- the graphics aren't super omg wow, but they look good, the weapons all have nice visual effects. and most importantly the frame rate never drops.

Simpler- the d-pad combos are gone, so things like freezing, shields, reverse firing, is all easy to put off with the press of a single button.

Lots of weapons- Each of the pickups is less then before, you get 2 homers for each pickup compared to 8 in TM2 for example, but the map is scattered with different weapons. So after a while you'll start to change your strategies to match your weapons and your weapons to match your strategies.

Jaffe pulled it off. These guys know exactly what makes Twisted Metal fun. Devs take note: This is how you do a reboot/sequel to a classic franchise... the right way! Buying this shit day one and telling everyone I know who own a PS3 to do the same.

My only gripe.. the game hard locked my PS3 after using Darkside's special attack. Other than that, this game is amazing. I'm glad for the delay and the extra time to polish the experience.

The AI is unrelenting lol. Hardly gives you a chance to breathe. Also, there are way too many control combinations, will take a while to get used to it, I guess.

The demo is great, man I've really missed car combat games. It looks decent as well but my god even an ounce of AF would make a world of difference in this game.

I know a guy who doesn't play any games whatsoever unless its a flash game or blades of steel, but he LOVES twisted metal. He's going to be so happy that this game is coming out in two weeks and that it does the classics justice.

Now that I can finally play online I noticed something odd...online has songs that don't play in challenge mode...

First time TM player and damn, there's a lot to take in :D. The AI is kicking my ass right now and the controls are unusual for sure, but I can definitely see myself getting sucked in if there's a good online community.
