Alan Wake's American Nightmare |OT| Not a lake, a primordial ocean.

Right at the start, someone asks if there's going to be DLC for American Nightmare...but this is DLC for the main game...

And another person asked if they improved the sprinting, made it longer as if it was a glitch...Jesus christ, IGN questions are the worst.

The sprinting in Alan Wake is terrible. Alan can run 10 feet or so and then he's out of breath. It's ridiculous. Might as well not have sprinting at all.

And yeah, this is not DLC.

he's a writer. we should be more amazed that he can shoot straight than we should be amazed at his pathetic cardio ;)

I wish I could get excited for this, but I was sick of Alan Wake's combat well before I finished the game; I really wanted more exploration and discovery. That American Nightmare is even more combat-focused really puts me off.

I'm a writer and I run half marathons.

there is no correlation between those two things though. writing doesn't prevent you from being able to run, but knowing someone is a writer doesn't in any way indicate a base level of cardio.

my point is, a writer having pathetic cardio isn't surprising. nothing that we know about Alan indicates any athletic ability, at all.

i'm a writer too, but my longest run currently is 7.5 miles ;) aiming for a half marathon in the spring.

the combat is much more varied though. a wider variety of weapons that are functionally more distinct than the weapons in the original, and a wider variety of enemies that are more distinct than the various enemies in the first game.

wooo!

Gotta finish Signal AND Writer by the end of this weekend, wish me luck!

Already did Nightmare a few weeks back for main story

Fuck thermoses though ...shit is tedious and dumb

I love Alan Wake, but I hate collectibles, so yeah we agree on that :)
The Signal is haaaard on Nightmare, prepare yourself.

This was mentioned in the de facto Alan Wake PC OT but I didn't see it in this thread: RPS conducted a short chat with Remedy, and they basically confirmed that American Nightmare will arrive on the PC at a later date:

What's the typical exclusivity period of quasi-exclusive XBLA titles? 6 months?

Depends on the game. The super high profile ones are a year.

DO I need to play the original before starting this? As in does this continue where Alan wake left off? Will I spoil Alan Wake if I play this first?

As Remedy has said, it is more of a standalone experience so you don't really have to play the first. Though if you haven't it is totally worth the money and can be found for cheap now a days too. Alan Wake was much more story and atmosphere focused while this one is more action focused.

IGN review is up!

8.0, pretty good. :) Apparently the story is tough to follow though :/

Eh, some said the first one was hard to follow, will wait for more reviews and so on to see what other people think, but that isn't a turn off at all. I already knew the story wouldn't be as good because of the direction they wanted to go for this one. However, Alan Wake 2 (oh there better be one) will most likely go back to how the original was if you look at some comments by the Remedy.

I haven't followed this game's development but has there been any backlash about changing from survival horror to grindhouse survival action with machine guns and auto-shotguns?

Alan Wake 2 will go back to survival horror, so I don't see why anyone should be upset.

Alan Wake's more action-horror/supernatural thriller than out-and-out survival horror. Alan Wake 2 will probably be more the same. American Nightmare is a pulp thriller, it's not very horror at all.

I can't believe this game wasn't released on PC since it's episodic nature would have made a killing on Steam.

Where is the coolawesome reception on console? It's so charming with all these little details and there is nothing like it on those systems. QUANTUM IMMORTALITY!

Looking forward to playing it this week. I hope they advance the story a little bit, as opposed to the DLC episodes (where they end basically where they started, and you could go into -- hypothetically -- Alan Wake 2 having skipped them and not missed anything.

More reviews are rolling out.

More than that, the character himself simply feels more at home in this shorter, punchier, less laboured and self-regarding form. Freed from the weight of expectation that accompanies a full retail release in this genre, the experience - while lacking the set-piece spectacle and spookiness of the original - is less forced and more comfortably pitched.

As the title intimates, the story ends with question marks lingering over the nature of Wake's experience. But even if it really is his nightmare, our troubled writer is arguably better company asleep than awake.

If the original game was a scene-setting mini-series, American Nightmares feels like a season pilot - which only makes the oddly definitive ending seem slightly confusing. The episodic gaming revolution of 2007 may have fallen flat on its face, but hopefully we won't have to wait another year for next week's show.

Whilst ambitious, the promise in Alan Wake's American Nightmare never materialises. The elementary combat system is entertaining, but ultimately overshadowed by a hopelessly contrived plot. Mr Scratch's presence could have been something special, and it's regrettable that his performance is throwaway. As with the rest of the game, a lack of cohesion and clear thought from Remedy ensures American Nightmare feels like a missed opportunity. The time-loop experiment is an intriguing idea, but restricts the game's design. Alan's Wake's first spin-off never manages to outshine the intricate nature of his original outing, and the author has lost sight of the game's dominant genre.

Darkest Star, being the last track on that album, I listened to it the least. Now I listen to it the most <3

So when exactly can we expect this on the US marketplace? We talking like midnight, 6am, whenever they feel like it like PSN? EST?

I really liked the Eurogamer review - it got a 7 but the tone throughout is really positive and I tend to agree with them on a lot of things.

Although it's interesting to see that a 7.5 from CVG ends with "fallen flat on it's face" fairly at odds with a relatively positive review.
