The new iPad |OT|

Doesn't it go away with usage after some time?

I'm not sure, to be honest, but I guess I'll find out.

It was hard to get a good picture of, but it looks as if it's simply a gap in whatever material is beside the touchscreen at the top of the iPad.

Finally screen tests from ixbt arrived.

http://www.ixbt.com/td/new-ipad-test-display.shtml (russian)

Very nice gamma curve (as usual for apple), slight contrast increase (830:1 vs 740:1 in the old screen), finally the color space is in full accordance to sRGB.

Old iPad:

Its not all good news, however, since the screen is warmer. Color temperature of the original iPad was closer to standard 6500K.

And deviation from black body spectrum is a bit higher for the new screen, though still under acceptable 10%.

Been typing out more stuff with my new BT keyboard and holy crap does typing on this thing feel good. Coupled with the iPad itself, I swear I don't ever want to use my laptop again.

Trying to decide if Pages is worth the money or if I can find another word app like it. I seriously wish there was MSOffice on the app store - all my productivity needs would be answered immediately.

Only downside with the keyboard is that spellcheck doesn't seem to want to pop up when I misspell a word correctly, so I've been trying to make sure that I'm spelling correctly.

Pages is worth the money. I've tried them all and IMO nothing else comes close from a UI, polish, and usability standpoint.

Pages highlights spelling mistakes. While it's not as robust as Word, it's as good as it gets for ipad. It's also easy to import/export your docs to Word through e-mail or itunes.

Erm, that graph shows the new iPad is actually cooler than the iPad 2, not warmer. Interesting result given what some people have been saying about their screen being more yellow than their old iPads (although I don't doubt there's variation btw. panels on the new one).

Impressive sRGB coverage, though. Very spot on.

why do apple stores have such a poor selection of iPad cases? At least in the UK they pretty much only sell their smart covers - and they dedicate a lot of shelf space to it. But they sell tons of 3rd party iPhone cases, MBP and MBA cases/bags. Just seems to be iPad they treat differently. Was hoping to look at rear covers..

Holy crap at splash top. Between this and air video, my video needs should be covered.

whats good about splash top Vs other VNC solutions? Does it require a server running on the target computer? I'm using teleport right now (they've submitted a retina update, just waiting on Apple) and am very happy with it but always open to alternatives

That's actually showing that the screen is cooler. Less than 6500K = warmer. Higher = cooler.

Took my iPad to Genius Bar last night. The guy took it in the back where it could be viewed in the dark and immediately came back out with a replacement acknowledging that the yellowing around the outer portion of the screen was unacceptable. Brought home the new one and it was even worse than the first. Just returned it for a full refund. I'll give Apple a few months to get their shit together and then try again. Not paying full price for a defective product.

that really sucks man, am I just not noticing it or is mine ok?

I kind of wish I went with the LTE. I don't live in a city so I can't get wifi everywhere. My parents might end up getting an iPad though. Maybe I'll just give them my wifi and pay the LTE difference. Not really a huge deal though since I can just tether my phone.

quick (maybe dumb) question: can SplashTop do drag & drop (to add songs to a playlist in iTunes, for example)?

I currently use RDM and while it's supposed to work on there, it doesn't always.

It's not easy to see via pics other than your screen is very warm. When I moved text up/down on mine it looked like text was moving through shadows, because parts of the screen were much warmer than others. Completely unacceptable. But like I said, I'll try again later in the year or just wait for the next iteration. If retina-based Airs come out first, I'd rather own that.

Can you mirror -anything- to an Apple TV or are there restrictions? If so, is the framerate constant? And what is the resolution?

You can mirror the entire device to an Apple TV. The quality sucks. As far as just streaming video-audio that can be done on an app by app basis. ABC's app won't stream video but it does audio. NBC streams both.

My Adonit Pro stylus came in today. Any suggestions for note taking apps? I've kinda settled on Note Taker HD, not the most feature rich, but I like the automated wristguard. Penultimate has a similar function, but it doesn't work very well and it's hindered even moreso by multi-touch gestures.

All the other apps I looked over seem to just have a set palm area that you have to constantly adjust. I'd like to try some others, but I don't really feel like spending more money.

Well, yea, from perception point of view you are right, of course. Higher black body temperature -- higher energy - lower wavelength - shift to blue side of the spectra - looks cooler to us.

From physics point of view, 7000 Kelvin black body is warmer than 6500 K black body, so I mixed it up at the first glance. :) my bad.

Erg. Bummer. I was mostly looking forward to this function. Oh well.

Right, I wasn't talking about absolute temperature, since this is about color temperature which is very different.

It is nice, but it's pretty common, Incipio did the same thing with their first version of the IPad 2 NGP case. They can't sell them defective so why bother with returns?

They still work fine with an iPad 2, so I wouldn't call them completely defective(giving mine to the wife). The only issue is the magnet needs to be flipped. Not all of the Maroo cases were affected, either.

Well, since it seems like Pages will do what I need for the most part and then simply edit in Word (mostly to use the Comments boxes) when I need.

Thanks gents!

Sites that review displays need to get a hold of multiple devices to figure out the variance between the differing screens out there.

Notability is $1 and while it doesn't have an automated wrist guard afaik, I generally like it better than Note Taker. The natural ink and auto advance on the zoom works better for example, and overall the UI is just simpler for the most part. Audio is a nice feature as well, at least if you have a use for it. That said if Note Taker works for you it's not like you need to switch away from it.
There are restrictions on certain video apps, like HBO GO. For its intended purpose, it works fine.
Yeah some apps just block the mirroring by putting their own video output there on the external screen. Normally that's is intended for stuff like Keynote's presentation feature, or Real Racing 2's full widescreen view (while showing basic track stuff on the iPad), stuff that can be formatted for the external screen specifically. Without it apps can just be mirrored which will give you a 4:3 box in your TV.

As for performance it'll depend a lot on your network. Ideally the Apple TV would be wired and the network would be a nicely running 802.11n network.

The store where I am going to buy my iPad has recieved a shipment of different Maroo cases. Which one would you recommend?
Also the description on them says they fit iPad 2 and iPad (2012), are these the old (faulty) ones or the redesigned ones?

The only redesign they will do is make sure the magnet is flipped correctly(in the iPad 2 polarity didn't matter, in the new iPad, it does). I would wait, because otherwise there is a 50/50 chance the sleep feature won't work.

Did Noteability always have zoom? I've had it for some time, but haven't used it for quite a while. I don't remember that feature. Maybe I should give it another try. I usually use NoteTaker HD myself in zoom-mode. I'm not sure what features DarthWufei is looking for, but there are more in NoteTaker than I've ever used. It seems packed with features. I have a few of the pay apps like Noteability, Penuntlimate and NoteTaker HD.

Try an app called Ghostwriter Notes.

I was asking about mirroring, but I'd be curious to hear about streaming as well.

Also, on a related note, can you play youtube videos in 1080 on the device? And what about airplaying youtube videos?

Not sure why you'd want to airplay youtube to apple tv since it has Youtube. Also not positive about 1080p, but the streaming/airplay looks really good as long as the source is good. Mirroring, however, at least in my experience only used a small portion of my TV's screen and there was noticeable lag in games/apps, framerate issues, and obvious resolution issues with videos. Like I said, ABC blocks airplay, but you can use mirroring, and the quality of the stream is crappy (low-res, doesnt use all of your screen).

You ever actually try to use youtube on apple tv? It is a real bitch to use.

I'm want to be able to type onto the ipad to search for videos. Admittedly I don't know how the interface works with apple TV, but it I'm sure it is preferable to be able to type/search on an ipad vs. what ever interface Apple TV has.

That is actually a great reason to use airplay.

Still not sure why anyone would want to use the shitty mirroring function though.

720 on the old Apple TV, 1080 on the new one. 1080 with the HDMI adapter.

Where's the options for that in the ipad? I can Airplay at high res, but mirroring is just an ugly box that barely uses much of any of my TV's real estate.

My Apple TV is waiting for me at my apartment!

So if I have AVI files, I know I can convert them to MP4 and play them on the TV. But is there a way to stream the AVI files to the iPad then mirror them to the Apple TV?

You can use AirVideo on your Ipad to airplay to the AppleTv and play avi files like that. Quality may dip though.

I thought it was upgraded to 1080 for the new ATV?
Video streaming was upgraded, but not AirPlay Mirroring. The latter requires far more bandwidth and processing power on the device than streaming a single video stream. Check the iPad tech specs page.

Is it recommended to restart the iPad every one in a while? I've been getting a lot of force closes with Facebook, and flixster. My Flipboard also has a lot of hitches when scrolling through my articles.

The Facebook App crashes a lot for me. I think it's just shitty. If I go to FB I usually use Safari. I don't use Flixster, but I haven't really had too many issues with Flipboard. I only do a hard reboot (home and sleep held down for many seconds) when I have an app that closes as soon as I try to open it.
