I've never played this game and am about to start as soon as it's done updating itself...tips, suggestions....also is the in game tutorial any good or should I look elsewhere?

Grow a thick skin. No seriously! I knew a few people who quit just because of all the shit talkin that goes on.

Be patient(a). There's a ton of characters, movelist, items, and match-ups to learn. Read/watch guides and practice.

Be patient(b). There will be several trolls. leavers, etc that will test your patience. It will tend to reduce as you play more.

I have ignored Veigar even though I had him, came in the champion pack. But he kinda rocks if you dont get focused and can land the E and farm with Q. If you land EWQR someone is deeeeeeeeeeeeeeead

The best thing about Veigar, aside from the rainbows with the leprechaun skin, are the sound effects. You see someone take the first couple of hits of the combo, and you're like, that's not much, this Veigar is so lame. And then it's like swip shooop BOOOOM and the other 60% of their health vanishes.

solomid.net/guides is your savior.

And start by playing some Ashe, it'll teach you about positioning.

Awesome, yes just finished the battle tutorial...Seems like a fun game! Will definitely be playing it. I'll be sure to check out that link and also some videos on youtube. Seen it's quite popular on Twitch TV as well.

So I'm trying to learn Shen top (late I know), but I just can't seem to get a good item order down.

I try and take the HP 1st and go straight into a Heart of Gold. Then I buy boots. Then I'm kind of confused on where to go. Warmogs? Sunfire? Rylias? Should I just be stacking as much HP as humanly possible?

Also he seems like he can tank really well, but his damage sort of sucks. Plus his ult is really useful in certain situations, but then again in a team fight when you're already grouped it's a non factor. Normally tank wise my go to is Bowser Rammus, and while like she he's a tank not a dps dealer, but at least I can do something when his ult is up. I kind of feel like I miss that angle with Shen.

Merc Tread
Heart of Gold->Randuin
Wit's End
Atma
Warmog/Frozen Mallet
Situational (FoN, Visage, QSS, GA)

Shen gets banned very often because he's really tanky AND deals good damage. He's not gonna melt enemies like AD carries but he'll suck their HP overtime. Ulti is fantastic for split pushing. Lets you bail out or rejoin a team fight anytime while you're happy pushing a lane. Kinda like Yi's annoying ability to split push... except he's slower but has a global presence.

Are you playing mid as another caster or a bruiser like Path? If you're a caster, you're looking to do as much dmg as possible without taking any dmg. Late game, you will probably worry more about having AD rushing after you than AP so I rather get HP quints over MR.

I'd mainly be taking them for mid game laning with the goal of out sustaining enemy casters and avoiding 1 burst kills from assassins like leblanc etc.

Shen wrecks top. This last game, I was able to out dmg one of my most hated champs - Riven. Starting item depends on the enemy. I've been starting with Doran's shield for the armor and regen, allowing me to constantly harass my enemy and take a few hits from minions. Spam Q as much as possible. The cd is so fast, the dmg will add up soon enough. Especially try to land Ki strike with Q on them. I'll sometimes start with Ruby Crystal if I want to rush HoG and I know I can outsustain them.

From there it depends.
Boots
Heart of Gold
Wit's End for ap heavy teams/Atmas for AD heavy team
Merc Treads/Ninja Tabi
Sunfire Cape
Randuin if support didn't get/FoN/GA

What do you do as Tristana when the other team is insanely tanky? Even with a Bloodthirsty(full), Last Whisper, Phantom Dancer I was still doing extremely low damage to the point where people pretty much ignored me.

Dont get bloodthirster first. Get Infinity edge and PD on Trist. Her massive range synergises really well with the crits.

Go Boots, doran blade/s, Vamp scepter, Infinity edge, Last whisper then bloodthirster. I sometimes like to get wriggles after infinity though just for the free ward

Thanks for the tips. I also noticed every guide maxes her rocket jump first, I always find that in crucial moments I just don't have the attack speed necessary to kill someone due to leveling it first over rapid fire, and it's usually a situation where jumping in will get me killed.

Wouldn't it be alright just to put a point or two in rocket jump than max rapid fire first?

Maxing rocket jump gives her incredible lane pressure. If you want to take points out of something, take them out of E.

Oh, his ult is amazing and saves so many asses and allows You to be anywhere with a team. Problem with Shen on top is that he will probably lose his tower first because he will be helping team with his ult, but top tower isnt that crucial for a win, so its not a big problem.
He's ult is useless in lanning to, but You have so much harass ability because of his Q that it doesnt matter.

I build him a little different then guys up there, for example skip randuin completely and do atma really rarely, i prefer to build hp on him because of Force of Nature passive and Q.
Dorian Shield [armor + 5hp pots against Lee Sin, magic res + hp pots against Rumble], mercury threads, sunfire cape, giant belt -> negatron cloak -> force of nature -> warmog.

There are only 4 champs that can sustain against Shen on top: Yorick, Lee Sin, Rumble and Riven.

Or any guy my Soraka goes with :p

Started to play her as my starting choice to get to know the game after recommendation, laning with her and a carry is so good in an unranked game when our full team is on it's really unfair :-D

The game is really well done, I was always curious about DOTA but it was always too much. This here is perfectly executed for my needs :)
Plus having a competent friend shouting at you for even a single game helps tremendously :p

I wanted to post a screenshot last night but abload.de wasn't working.

To make up for the failed teams in ranked with crazy compositions, my team won with 5 solo top champions in ranked after a 30-minute surrender. It seems impossible that we could have done enough damage past 40 minutes so the surrender was probably fortunate.

We had lee sin jungling, gangplank top, I think yorick mid, and shen + volibear bottom, and were taking down turrets and killing champions without too much fuss.

Weren't you like, 1700-2000 ELO? You might have reached your ELO or whatnot.

Otherwise, take 3 days away from the game, sip a tropical beverage, take a hike, and so forth. When you come back, you will destroy your opposition.

Attack speed is probably the weakest stat you can get on Trist early on. You need to buy damage before you invest on attack speed (a good rule of thumb for most carries). Also, your other two skills have amazing base damage, especially early game. You can essentially form kill- lanes with her.

If you were to ignore your rapid fire during the first five levels, with three point on rocket jump, and two points on Burnout, you would do a total burst of 300 magic damage. It would take around roughly 4 seconds to get the same level of damage with autoattacks (even with a leveled up rapid fire on). The added slow from rocket jump (60%) is also very effective, and allows you to land in more autoattacks while your burnout DoT is applied.

It is also worth noting that your ulti adds in another 300 damage to your burst, effectively doubling it.

Also note the fact that whenever you get a kill/assist, your rocket jump cooldown resets. This makes for excellent diving/multikill- opportunities.

So basically, you gotta play Trist like a caster in the lane. Poke' em down whenever possible, then finish them off when they are low. Only start investing on rapid fire when you have your first major damage item (IE), and want to dish out better dps.

Never thought about playing her like a caster at first. I guess I'll try that.

Thanks. I actually tried again with him last night, and I went up against a Rumble. I did ok, but not great. Missed an early kill where they got away with like 10 hp, and had one bad death cause I wasn't paying attention and lane pushing to hard.

Biggest worry I have is my ult seems great to help and say wreck Bot around lvls 6-8, but I feel like doing so just leaves top lane wide open. I'm just saying here take my tower. It's free tower kill time here while I'm off dicking around Bot lane.

god i miss leona so much.

edit:

even though it may not looks like it. i got FON last.

Been thinking about picking up Leona as a tank character so that I can fulfill every role that my team needs (aside from jungle). How would you say she ranks up against other tanks like Mumu and Shen?

Leona; has no damage, but amazing CC and tankiness early on, can easily net you First Blood or stay on a target until the rest of the team catches up. NOTE: She does NO damage whatever, with items or without, so she cannot kill anyone by herself unless she burns her ult + Eclipse. Do not expect to carry with her, she cannot kill people.

Amumu; good at initiating and doing a lot of indirect damage through his tears but he is solely dependent on his ult and his skillshot CC for initiating, while Leona has an on-hit stun, built-in defense, and two skillshot CC. He has much better damage then Leona but isn't really a carry unless he's everywhere at once, like:

Shen; different because he is inherently tanky but can also deal a ton of damage to unaware teams, and has the power to turn a losing battle into a winning one. He also has a built in escape and taunt, which are useful for tower dives. However, Shen lacks direct CC (if he misses his dash). He also falls hard to AP early on whereas Leona can take both AD and AP at a mediocre level.

They are very different characters and I honestly don't think Leona is worth 6300 but it's up to you.

I'm still partial to Rammy even post nerfs, but that's just me. He can initiate well with his rolly ball, can tank well with his shield up, can taunt to help take the aggro, and he can wreak some havoc when his ult is up since it's an AOE.

His downside is he sucks early game if you aren't in the jungle. He can't do that much damage until he gets his ult and he gets a ton of items to synergize with his passive. He's also much less OP against double AP comps because you have to build for MR/HP verses stacking Armor that helps his passive.

In terms of tanks I'd say...

Rammus > Amumu > Shen > Lenona

That being said Shen has the ability to do the most regular damage and run top lane. Something Rammy and Mumu can't really do.
