The setting is fine. Thor sucks because the character sucks. Branaugh and Hemsworth got as close as anyone ever could to making the character likable.
Thor is actually a great character with many adventures, supporting cast, and great creators have left their mark on him and supporting cast (see journey into mystery current run). He's sword and sorcery, bravery and valor, reckless youth and coming of age. The movie was ...im guessing ultimate thor, so thor at heart but the total package that is thor, the warriors three, asgard, the 9 realms, aesir/vanir/desir etc etc was augmented...why i still dont know. Im told its more believable, but the whole point of comics is telling stories, believable or not, last time i checked movies aren't exactly believable either, let alone comic book movies. Its not more believable that normal people with uber tech can get thrown thru a wormhole and survive....then get hit by a car and be fine the next day. So that little twist on asgard didnt do much for making it "believable" or compatible with a gamma powered monster, or a "super serum" soldier. I dont see a problem with making asgard and thor like a LOTR or Game of thrones type of world , so what if they're demigods guarding the world tree. If one thing defines the Marvel U and many other comic publishers its that everything is possible , from big bang cosmology to steady state, uber technology to powerful magiks, micro verse's, alternate universes, pocket universes, powerful relics, time travel, mutations, accidents and chance, fate, pantheons, embodiments of reality itself, all the way down to struggling kids taking up the mantle of a hero or a villain. Its ok to go that route of super tech is magic...but its not better than them being Aesir and Vanir and being the brave guardians of the world tree until the end. I mean seriously ...why are they using melee weapons and riding horses? Why is there an odin sleep? and full body armored guards with shields?? Its a different take but in no way better or more compatible. Not that time should be wasted explaining what they are over WHO they are, thats what comics are really about.
