Dragon's Dogma Demo Impressions

The demo's definitely too short. It barely gives you enough time to loot anything. The only interaction with inventory you get is equipping the lantern, and they don't show anything about leveling...

or anything about anything, basically :) . comes off like a demo for a linear action/adventure game...

Yeah..I think I'll just play through Dark Souls again. I wasn't that impressed with the demo as far as look and control. I did enjoy throwing my pawns, but their constant chatter is annoying. Kinda takes me out of the game world.

People talking within the game world takes you out of the game world?

I kinda like that. I like it when they tell you to "go for the eyes" or "a treasure is near" Its like having an extra pair of hands/ears.

Is the US PSN updated?

Apparently, I wont be able to play this until tomorrow. I will be downloading this thing all night.

Am I the only who who is not phased by it being letterboxed? Hell, I am so used to seeing letterboxing in movies that I don't even notice it anymore. Even if it is in a game.

I don't mind it at all.

Just noticed you can turn off the event camera (yeah, felt like playing again, whatever), my earlier whinings are put to rest. I'm also relieved you can turn off that box full of pawn updates, as well as most other hud elements. I love not seeing the enemy health bars, but I figure I better be able to keep track of mine and my pawns.

Most games get so barebones with menu options, not this one.

I like the extra chatter was kind of lonely in Skyrim with Lydia saying very few lines throughout the game.

Open world games like this are so hard to demo. I can't fault them for just giving us the prologue and a random battle against a low level Griffin. They just wanted to give you a taste of what it feels like and a chance to create your character and Pawn.

As far as that goes, it more than does it's job. But I still feel that just giving you the run of the world for 30 minutes and perhaps giving you a chance to run into (and get decimated by) some higher level foes would have helped the case for many. Regardless, it is enough to confirm for me that it is what I have been watching, and I can't wait.

The demo was fun, but the WHOLE TIME, all I could think of was "Man, this game would be a lot better with multiplayer". It's seriously all I could think about.

Is this not up on Xbox Live yet? I'm looking for it but can't find it.

It's only available for Gold. Do you have Gold? If so, the demo is available for you right this second.

I used a 48 hour Gold trial, I'm in Canada, but I'm pretty sure it's the same demo selection. I'll look again.

I don't think you get demos with trials. :/

Geez, the screen tearing is SO BAD in the gryphon fight. Really hurts my head. :(

Edit: I changed my mind. This game is awesome. Changing my preorder to the ps3 version, though.

It might help to look on xbox.com, and then add the game to your download queue via your PC, instead of constantly running over to your 360 to check. It'll save you a considerable amount of time.

So will this game run fine on the PS3 or I should take the safe 360 route?

What is your stance on tearing? If you don't mind it, 360, if you do PS3. FPS is better on 360, but I seriously didn't see a big issue with it on PS3. From the demo that is.

Both me and my pawn looks great.

Had trouble making a decent male character, they all look like a chubby and deformed version of Dante from dmc4

Looks like that might be the case, I tried to queue it online and get the message "requires gold subscription" .

Yet, on the 48 hour code card, it clearly says: "Use your free gold trial card for limitless gaming and on-demand entertainment. Online multiplayer. Early access to free game demos."

I am sure that will be the case for many, and I get that. However, it is what it is, and they simply wanted to make a personal single player experience with a unique form of interactivity that makes it stand out from the pack.

Single player games needed an injection of something like this and it certainly makes a case for the relevancy of the single player experience because it is also interactive at the same time. Yet, it does not intrude upon that personal nature of making it feel like your story, your experience. Not every game has to have the traditional co-op, and despite what it looks like, this game was never meant to have it. *shrugs*

Sorry I should have explained it better. I'm just worried that npc chatter for a long RPG could get annoying and take away from the atmosphere of the game if done poorly. Now if the npc's stay helpful and help point out things in the world that you would miss then I'm all for it. I'm just worried that it's going to get repetitive and old quick.

It's not that I want to bend every game to make it a multiplayer game. I would just rather have a real human healer I can talk to instead of an AI controlled healer I can't talk to (except for giving really basic commands that require I remove my thumb from the L stick).

The way combat works, it's actually hamstrung by the fact that it's single player. They may not have have intended to make a multiplayer game, but what they did make would quite obviously be a BETTER game with multiplayer. That much cannot be denied. Any game that requires teamwork to the degree DD does would always be better as a multiplayer game, rather than a single player game.

Relying on 3 AI controlled teammates to do something useful is frankly, pretty frustrating. Either balance the game for one person and ditch the pawns, or make the game multiplayer. This half step just enrages me when I'm actually playing the game.

"Hey idiot, stop laying down heals in dangerous places!"
"Hey moron! Give me fire!"
"Hey, you! Grab on to the other side and slash his other wing!"

I appreciate the basic commands and the ability for pawns to make decisions on how to attack a foe, but multiplayer would have actually made that griffin fight simply one of the best video game fights in years.

Without multiplayer, it's just simply not bad.

You're right that not every game needs co-op, but this one definitely does. It's a huge oversight.

So it's a timed demo?
Not as far as I could tell, but it's basically two boss fights and nothing else

I have pretty mixed feelings about this one, I kinda like the style of it but at the same time technically it could be better, and I kinda like the sounds and atmosphere but then you'll get the 'Pawns' spouting the same lines over and over (which I found repetitive even in such a short space of time)

The demo doesn't really explain stuff, I get that there's some focus on looting and gathering resources which was barely mentioned, and it looks like there's some sort of day/night cycle perhaps? As the sky grew to dusk during the Countryside Quest, but again there's nothing in there that expands upon it.

The issuing orders is fairly basic and it doesn't look like we can switch between characters on the fly? Or at least the demo indicates that isn't possible, which is a shame.

It's also very linear, but surely this kind of game has lots of non-linearity in it's structure? Maybe they should have added some sort of town or exploration section to give a better idea of what to expect.

The combat itself is fine, it's not really like D Souls, or Monster Hunter, or anything like that, it's a lot more straight forward. My main complaint was there was very little feedback to my hits, a common problem, but it seems to stand out moreso in this game. I found the rogue style class (with the bow and daggers) infinitely more fun than the generic swordman class in the Prologue Quest, the Countryside Quest was definitely the better of the two.

I'll probably just wait and see how it reviews before deciding to pick it up or not, so far it's a no

I agree with you. Especially since this game reminds me of the D & D beat em up, and that game would be much less fun without friends. While this game is fun solo, it would be much better multiplayer.

Like I said, I do indeed get the complaints and understand why some want co-op. But for those of us who do not want to have to be taken out of our experience by other players talking in the middle of the game, leaving in the middle of quests, not wanting to go at our preferred pace when we want to explore, this game more than fits the bill.

No AI will ever be as good as real players, but it is more than competent here, and as I noted above, there are also benefits as well. But whatever, you can't please everyone, and that's cool. But I'll say it is what I wanted and I can't wait. Hope you can at least get some fun out of it.

If the demo is any indication* everything would be far too easy in multiplayer.

You'd either have to give enemies a bazillion HP, make them one-shot every character with a stiff breeze, or something else along those lines.

As it stands if the mage gets a nuke off it takes practically an entire health bar away from the Griffon. Get four reasonably competent players together and it would turn into a complete joke.
Lack of MP sucks for certain but Capcom had their reasons.

*It's about 103% likely that the full game will not be this easy.

I'm hanging on to a griffin's head and stabbing it to death lol Definitely interested after playing the demo.

Ack. So much screen tearing in the 360 version.

Only noticed tearing within the first few seconds (before taking control of your character) in the Courtyard Quest.

I thought this game was online multiplayer after watching part of the video. Kinda bummed that it isn't.

Yeah, that's why you balance it accordingly.

I can see forcing myself not to use pawns to make the game challenging as it is.

I notice whenever there's light on the screen. Really apparent in the gryphon quest.

Well they would probably have to balance the game around both SP and MP if they want it to not suck like RE5 =P and that was a linear game without levels and exploration and dynamic quest structure with choices.

Glad to hear that the PS3 version isn't gimped. It was the version I wanted to get and I was just waiting to hear the 360 versions before deciding which version to preorder. I've now got it pre-ordered on Amazon and am super excited for the release day. I just wish there was a PC version... Oh well, maybe some day!

I do have two big complaints.

•I can't grab the Griffon's tail. That's fucking lame. You'd think that would be the one thing I could grab onto.
•Once you're grabbed onto an enemy, it feels like you can barely traverse it. I felt like I was making no progress moving around the Griffon or the Wyrm. I felt like I was better off jumping off and trying to jump/grab onto the place I wanted to be.

I grabbed onto the tail multiple times. Also, traversal didn't seem like that big of a problem. You weren't spamming attacks while trying to move, were you?

On the griffon? I tried like 4 times by jumping off a rock that was above it and still caught nothing. And no, I only started spamming attacks after it felt like I was making no progress moving on top of the thing,.

I played the demo on Xbox Live and I think I beat both sections within ten minutes. I notice some screen tearing but it wasn't too bad.

I'm not sure I'm that excited for this game to be honest -- I was expecting the demo to be more of a Dark Souls/Demon's Souls like difficulty with more focus on action. Instead, it just felt like Capcom's attempt to make a different version of Monster Hunter in Skyrim.

I know I'll get this, but when it's on sale.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Griffon Rape up in this shiz:

- Mage casts fire on my weapons, I nail the bastard with a triad shot of fiery justice as it was trying to swoop in on me. It crumples before our feet.
- Cuts to my main pawn for seemingly her limit break as she screams 'POWER OF FIRE' and slashes a fucking road of fire through the downed birdbeast.
- Both me and the other archer rain down fiery Cloudburst death and the beast shrivels up and dies.

I cannot wait for this game. I need it now.

I for one am glad it doesn't have demon souls like difficulty in this game. That was a big turn off in demon souls, why I never finished it, and why I won't be getting dark souls. Didn't find that fun one bit.
