Microsoft will provide more TV-like advertisements through XBox Live

You're confusing OS features with network features. Vita can do cross chat and stuff.
It doesn't matter if it's an OS feature or a network feature. What matters it that the PS3 cannot do that stuff. If it had all of those features and worked as seamlessly as Live does, then I'd almost certainly be using the PS3 as my main console for online gaming with friends instead of the 360.

PSN is just like Live in the same way that the 10 year old Nokia phone I have sitting in a drawer here is just like an iPhone.

I have not bought a 360 this gen because of the gold subscription fee and OS level advertising.
If every next gen console follows suite, i'm going the PC route.

How did pc gamers get to get all those services for free on games for windows live?

We bitched a lot ;)

GfWL Gold didn't offer anything that was worth paying for (overall online was free, but there were some additional features that were Gold only), and the game that was used to propagate it (Halo 2) was a mediocre port and an exclusive Vista title, so not a good choice either. The backlash was huge and Microsoft had to back off.

Not to mention, unless the game is MMO, online gaming was always free on PC. So stepping in in that kind of market and trying to monetize online, while not giving anything substantial in exchange, was a really stupid move on Microsoft's part.

This is a retaliation because of the time I took advantage of that £1 a month glitch a while back, isn't it?

i'm gonna go play some Trials HD and then watch some Wire on HBO Go. Have fun.

I can watch it on my iPad and iPhone also but it's a lot more fun on my Kuro with full surround. I already pay for live for gaming thus having HBO Go as an added perk is great for me.

As someone who has used both services, if PSN was my only option, I would have dumped consoles long ago and reluctantly gome back to a PC.

PSN and pc online make me appreciate live much more.

Jesus Christ.

@Meisadragon - Is that available on the PS3?
no. You should know better. There won't be any for PS3 because of OS footprint.
But Vita have proved me Sony do care about these features. We're likely see them on their next gen system.

But guuuuys, they are not ads! They are incredible offers only available of members of XBOX LIVE GOLD subscribers.

I don't have a problem with this, more money for them they will just keep improving the service.

My PC has been my main gaming device these past few years. Was thinking about getting in on this coming generation of consoles but stories like this make me want to stick with just a PC.There is a reason I don't watch TV and prefer games. Adds yuck.

If xbox live is free next time round I wouldn't mind adverts whilst waiting for a matchmaking game to be set up, or some such.

People who are saying that ads arn't a problem even when you pay for a monthly service are nuts, just nuts

I'm still pissed off each time I turn on the console the first thing you see is an advert on a giant square when it should be your game THAT YOU JUST BOUGHT on the start up

All my other paid services have ads and today they don't bother me at all. In fact, they are usually useful in helping me find content, because I don't rely on GAF, game sites, or blogs to stay up to date, so...

*shrugs*

I'm still pissed off each time I turn on the console the first thing you see is an advert on a giant square when it should be your game THAT YOU JUST BOUGHT on the start up

But then your game would be 1 click away instead of starting up on your game like it does now. /smh

Subscription + Ads is just beyond wrong.

Love the fact they are wanting to emulate a out of date and struggling ad system too.

How so? Some are bothered and others not. It doesn't mean that those who aren't botherd are "nuts". There is no one way or the other, just like everything else.

I really don't see why you should get rilled up for a game advert, seems strange to get angry about games being advertised. Heck, I saw Fez being promoted; nothing wrong with that. Don't get me wrong though, ads on a paid service is just smh; then again I can see why people would not mind it, but also understand why people are annoyed.

Great idea if online gaming were free on Live. I certainly wouldn't mind sitting through some ads if it meant a free basic Live service, but to charge people a fee for something that should be free to begin with and run ads?! Ouch. But hey, gamers are pushovers and will gladly take it up the rear.

I don't understand. I thought giving a company money was the way that ads go away.

I'm so confused.

Ads don't bother me, you'll see ads on cable and satellite services you pay for. Paying for apps and online gaming is beyond stupid to me. Paying for live probably put off a lot of gamers who might have bought their console, the extortionate price of the WiFi received stopped people feeling compelled to turn their consoles on, and they probably lose more sales than ofset by live subscriptions. MS's be has been a constant stream of nickel and dimeing and I can tired of it. If Ps4's PSN steps its shit up and remains free, MS may have to stop charging.

So glad I read this topic. I was *this* close to re-subscribing to Gold (I wanted to use the auction house in Forza 4) but now I remember why I cancelled my membership.

Regardless, I'm deeply impressed with the way that MS has trained their customers. I doubt they'll face any stick for this, even when it bleeds into games.

They'll probably say exactly what you said when WipEout HD got in-game ads: -

I want to be angry about this but I have consistently said that WipeOut HD and the Fury pack provide the most ridiculous value for money this gen. I'd gladly have paid twice as much. I'd have paid £15 for a cut down WipeOut Zone that just had Zone mode and 8 tracks. Given that, a small ad whilst loading a race is fine with me.
lol...

I'm not sure about ESPN, but I know last.fm had ads since day one. This sounds more like they found more partners outside of the group they have now (t-mobile, Kia, etc.), not necessarily more ads.

Free with ads
Paid with no ads

That would be a fair compromise.

This really would be the best move, but no company will throw away extra revenue =(

I thought I was seeing the ads that the topic was talking about. I wasn't (because I'm in the EU), I was just seeing the usual splash-screens. I might've felt differently if I'd seen the vids that users in the US were seeing. I see you skipped my edit after I saw what the crack was for the US.

Of course, that was patched out after users complained, so that might happen here if I'm wrong about the 'training'.

Also, Wipeout HD is something else. They could send a guy round to slap me with a salmon when I fired it up and I'd still play it.

This will not affect me one bit, unless I have to watch an ad before I can play. Then it will be good bye Xbox hello PS3.

Video ads on the dashboard are garbage. I'm stuck with a 1.5mbps connection for the foreseeable future and leaving my Xbox sitting on the dashboard eats up more than a quarter of my bandwidth looping the same 15 second ad over and over and over again. The answer, of course, is to never leave my Xbox idle on the dashboard, but it's still more than a little ridiculous.

Instead of celebrating more advertising, Microsoft needs to start focusing on less.

Uhm, will these ads appear in Gold subscription feeds/streams?

Gold members are already paying Microsoft, and paid subscriptions should obviously have the option for turning ads on/off.

XBL is just ahead of the advertising game. Practically every other medium has ads whether you pay for it or not. I'm not happy about it, but ads are a part of our consumerist society and they aren't going anywhere.

I'm floored by the responses in here. There is less complaining about the new proposed ads in the article (and judging from the article, the new proposed ads sound horrid!) and way more complaining about the ads on the current 360 dashboard (which don't bother me at all). I really don't get it. I don't see anything wrong with the dashboard. Bing tab, Home tab, Video tab, Music tab, Social tab, Apps tab, Systems tab. I'd guess only the Home, Video, Music, Social, and Apps tab have a square in the bottom right corner that has an advertisement in it, but what would possess people to complain about it? It's an unobtrusive square tucked away in the corner of the UI... my "cursor," for lack of a better term, almost NEVER wanders towards that corner. The rest of the UI is either functional (quickplay, search, play game) or is a series of gaming-related newsfeeds (or "advertisements" if you want to be obnoxious and as a hardcore gamer you have a problem that you're being informed about new gaming and DLC releases).

I mean yeah, each square can be boiled down to an advertisement, but I have no problem with being told that I can get a trial for Fez or that this week's deal of the week is a discount on Lego games.

I was thinking of switching to Xbox next gen but the way thing are going I'm certainly not. Maybe things aren't as bad in PS3land as I originally thought. (now wait for Sony to throw some shit on the fan now)

Really, the ads don't bother me. I can easily ignore them completely on the main screen. The ONLY app I use (rarely) is Last FM and their ads are very quick and non intrusive.

Battered wife syndrome. XBL and its customers would make a good thesis for the social sciences.
Why? Most cross-platform games run better on the 360. Xbox Live is far better than PSN. The 360 isn't plagued with forced installs, massive patches, manually syncing trophies and other annoying shit. It's not like people are choosing the 360 and Live without good reason - but of course it's always best to ignore those reasons when being a patronising cunt.

Well said, as long as I do not have to see the ad before my system boots up I do not give a shit. I will ignore them like all the other ads on the system
