I'll start with the only pure tank, Lancer. Uses heavy armor and a lance/shield combo. Pretty standard tanking affair. They are very durable, and rely on a blocking mechanic that absorbs all damage and costs MP. They tend to be solid walls of defense in group PvP, and in early 1v1 PvP, rock everyone's socks. Other classes catch up by max level (reportedly). For PvE, they make a standard, simple Tank. Out of the two tanks in the game, they are far easier to play (that doesn't at all undermine their usefulness or the skill of those that play them, as a bad Lancer is still a bad Lancer).

The other tank is a hybrid DPS/tank, the Warrior. Uses light armor (though has a "stance" and associated buffs to get similar defense to the heavy armor wearing Lancer) and dual swords. Fast hits, very mobile. Acts an an avoidance tank when in that role. In PvP, they don't shine until late levels, where they get deadly with lots of stuns and ridiculous mobility. In PvE, their DPS is middle to bottom of the pack, but they come with important debuffs that make them valuable to any group. As far as tanking goes, they are VERY hard to play in a tank role. It's not impossible, and a Warrior can tank all of the content in the game. It just takes a lot more work, and a lot more practice.

Berserker and Slayer are the two pure DPS classes, and are something of an analogue to the two classes mentioned above.

A Berserker, like the Lancer, has a block mechanic to mitigate incoming damage. Uses heavy armor and a massive axe. They are not as mobile, and rely on slow hitting moves with high burst. They have charging skills and are a very durable solo class, in that they are one of the easier classes to solo BAMs with because of their solid hits and ability to pseudo-tank lower end content (not sure how well this scales into higher levels).

The Slayer, like the Warrior, has a dodge mechanic to avoid incoming damage. Uses light armor and a large two-handed sword. Slayers are more bursty than the Warrior, though not quite as fast (and not as slow as the Berserker). I would consider them a pretty standard affair as far as DPS goes, but they come with a solid range attack and a bunch of gap closers. They are considered one of the best PvP classes, if not the best, as Slayers are so well rounded that they have a tool for every situation. They make for a VERY solid, dependable DPS class in general.

Other people can add to/correct the above. These are just my impressions/experiences and the culmination of a lot of reading on the various classes.

Because of the hype around the Western TERA release I've decided to pay that damn 1500 yen for a "light plan" (120 hours which you can use for 30 days) and play some JP TERA.
Still had my open beta Sorc on level 22 and I've got him to level 27 in around 8 hours.
Too bad the areas for my current level are pretty barren, despite the server merge that happened a while ago. I'm on Shara, the only pvp server btw.

Coming back to TERA means the resurrection of my TERA minus album. Already started uploading new screenshots there.

Somebody make the EU guilds and post in the Community thread. You just need 3g and be level 8. Make them on one PvE server and one PvP server.

The head start phase begins in 6 hours and 8 minutes from now, if you preordered the game or have a buddy code from someone who has done that you can play during the Head Start.

Well I will probably pick this up on Tuesday. The combat looks pretty cool.

The lancer reminds me of the one in Monster Hunter which was one of my favourite weapons so I'll probably be trying that out first.

They start off pretty dull, but if you can tough it out through the boring early game of them you get the best pvp class in the game as a reward. Oh and the more requested tank.
warriors are never requested to tank LOL

Sounds good, I'll probably try out all the classes though just in case I find something I like better.

I really love playing a lancer but I am intimidated with tanking for a group; having never done it before.

Is there good starter dungeon where I could get some practice on?

If you are on VoT, we won't mind having you practice with us. Also, right outside of Secret Base, the first real dungeon you do, are your first BAMs, who are relatively tame and straightforward. You can practice reading the telegraphs on them and get an idea of how it works as a Lancer. My own experience in the dungeons (when not severely underleveled and undermanned) was that tanking was far more crucial on the bosses, and much less so on the trash in between. Groups of monsters to be peeled off usually number between two and three (with sometimes a ton of little minions thrown in), so things are easily manageable without the Lancer doing anything fancy. If anything, the role of the Lancer in that case would be to gather multiple groups together to be all killed at once (and that definitely takes some practice to do right).

Yes, and maybe. I did preorder (a loooong time ago) and I never got headstart codes. Other people did. If you ask them, they might give them to you. EME has been great at support.

Stupid bank of america, its processing tera has giving me a negative balance, yet my actual balance says I have several thousand just sitting there, which is probably why no email yet. Anybody have a headstart code to spare so I can at least download this client?
