The new art, and the articles I refuse to read but you people keep posting quotes from....

ZE HYPE IS REACHING CRITICAL LEVELS

Apologies...I think? I hope there wasn't anything spoilerish I posted but I'll make sure not to post any unmarked from now on!

All that art, I hope I can get the physical copies!

My vote for the OT title: Funny as hell, I was in a Rockstar game. It's just perfect.

:lol I'm not really complaining, just saying that you people and your quotes are only making me shift around in my seat more anxiously with PURE UNCUT HYPE.

It's like being in a Prometheus, or The Dark Knight Rises thread and avoiding the trailer but reading the praise. It hurt SO GOOD.

Jesus, these previews!! I got to stop and just wait for the game. So fucking HYPED!!!

@people pointing out that MP1&2 had annoying characters too
I actually play the Max Payne games on a regular basis (although admittedly MP1 a lot more than MP2), and while I agree that Mr. Flesh of Fallen Angels was annoying, what I'm fuzzy about is Rockstar's particular style of annoying supporting characters. At least I felt most of Red Dead's serious tones to be completely ruined by those kind of characters (endgame barred, 'course), and I worry about that for MP3.

With the hype level people are reaching, they are really setting themselves up to be disappointed I think. The natural GAF overhyped reaction that just turns to sour bitterness and tears when the smallest thing bothers them.

Seriously?

I felt they were right at home, even real life is full of characters.

I'm accustomed to GAF's hype train, but this is different. I've been waiting for this game for almost a decade and its fucking R*. They have never once disappointed me. The articles are just solidifying the assurance that the game will deliver.

I've seen enough of the combat in the Tech & Design videos that I know what to expect. As long as the enemy placement, and combat design isn't as bad as something like Uncharted 3 (and even if it is, shooting dudes looks to be way more fun in this game), I'll be happy. Rockstar developed titles deliver 95% of the time for me.

I feel the same way.

God, I love it.

While GAF's backlash will eventually come as it is wont to, I know deep in my heart, in my bones, that I will forever love this game.

I really like The Verge articles, and how the focus is on Max and how much the game is about his character and stuff.

Yeah, I'm going to forecast that Gafs main grip is going to be the controls. I played it at PAX, I thought they felt awesome. Kind of floaty when just aiming and trigger firing, but mixed with aiming down sights for precision shooting was really awesome, especially in bullet time.

I figured the main complaint would be about length.

By the way, are you able to blind-fire when in cover?

Yes, the only use I really found for it when playing the demo was for trying to get enemies out from cover. You really don't wanna stay in cover too long. If anything you just want to use it for a quick breather, pop and painkiller and plan your next line of attack.

Any word on how the PS3 version will perform/look?

I didn't get to play it, but from walking by and seeing two TVs playing it in the Rockstar booth at PAX it seemed to look and play just fine. I heard the only gripe was the R2/L2 firing buttons. But that could be changed in the options to R1/L1.

I e-mailed R* this question a few days ago, here's their response:

Thanks. You can expect all three platforms to offer the complete Max Payne 3 experience as we originally envisioned. If you have any other questions, please let us know.

I figure since they also showed it off at PAX, then it must be up to par, or at least far better than the PS3 versions of RDR and GTA

I played the PS3 demo and it ran flawlessly.

The CVG article mentions assets throughout one of the levels that longtime Max Payne fans will get a kick out of...

I will eat my Max Payne 3 manual if this doesn't have fake TV shows.

R* did say that they're keeping some achievements under wraps still from the list they put out.

"Achievement Unlocked: Watch an entire season of Lords & Ladies". Believe.

I feel like I've been gone for hours doing terrible papers, and all this great information is coming through. HYPE HAS BEEN AT MAX! Great to hear this about the PS3 version- some major reassurance ! I just can't wait for Thursday- that graphic novel promises to be incredible!

No need to even ask! :) That Verge article was so epic. AHHHH! "We wanted Max's hazy drunken perspective to also feel vaguely similar to when he is in Bullet Time, as if Bullet Time, which is when he is at his best and almost super human, is also something of an addiction to him - like the moment when he feels most himself," Houser said. "It is playing the game (and the previous games) that has, to some extent put him in this state."

Housers = Golden GODS!

I remember when this game was first revealed, we were worried that they would ruin Max as a character, but it seems that they understand him better than ever the most die hard fans.

Finally got around to reading The Verge preview and rundown on Max. Great reads!

You know if the GTTV footage is the nightclub then I wouldn't mind that one bit.

I took the liberty to make a Google Doc spreadsheet where we can share multiplayer account names. It should be editable to anyone with the link and a Google/Gmail account, please let me know if this is correct.

Just reposting this for good measure. I guess the GAF Crew name is NoirGAF until others vote another name? Is anybody picking this up at midnight too? Rockstar is going to be online to play some multiplayer at night so I'll be on for sure.

finally seeing all of this for the first time now that I'm done with finals. They are not messing around with this... too much swag in the gunplay department

It's not floaty, just delayed on their console setup there. The 360 pad on PC was 100% perfect.

There's a very large delay if you flick the movement stick or analog for aiming imo. Probably will not be an issue if you don't go for headshots and use bullet time constantly to refine your aim, but I didn't like it and it was very noticeable for me. Hopefully they've reduced it.

See my earlier post:
____
I played both 360 and the PC version at PAX. Both run and control awesome.
I disagree here. I'm not sure if it was their setup or early build, but the 360 version which I played twice on two different console and TV setups has pretty terrible input delay on aiming and movement.
PC was flawless and 360 pad on PC was flawless. Controls are good. Performance is good.

As a bonus the PC version has ALL the options you'd expect. No GTA IV bullshit.
This was always the difference between PC and Console Max Payne to me in the past. The ability to dive and headshot everyone before you hit the ground.
Yeah, I was playing another level where I had 10% health, 0 painkillers (medpacks) and I had to fight 5 people on low ground who were advancing and throwing grenades.

I decided to just leap over the railing, taking out one guy, headshotting the next two while still in mid air, turning to finish off the last guy, then turning the other direction to finish off the last person just coming out of cover as I reloaded. To my understanding headshots prolong your bullet time which maybe have been why I was able to do that. Pretty awesome to see the guys turning to face you mid air in slo mo.
My only worry about this video? I'm hoping they're playing on easy mode or something, because it looks like bullet time plus constant moving makes you damn near invincible (or rather the enemies have mega-shit aim) . I mean, guys with a shotgun two feet from him are missing him entirely. Bullet Time should still have strategy to it, not just a "okay now you can charge into the middle of the group of enemies and not worry about it" insta-own button. Hopefully it just looks like that to make for a good trailer...

It's obviously harder nowadays since games are so complex but I'm hoping for a continuation of Max Payne's awesome modding community with 3.
The early part of the game most were being shown is very easy. I was playing a different level where I didn't have 6 painkillers and enemies were more keen on pushing forward.

Agreed. It's not a cover shooter and it doesn't like letting you play it like one.

So I guess it was no bullshit when Hakkinen(sp?) said the game was "fucking brilliant".
It is quite good on PC.
