Is there actually a readable (practically speaking) version of this? I had thought the Infinity Gauntlet story-line was one of Marvel's massive crossover events.

Got to remember, this was before crossovers required you to buy 4 of each Marvel title in order to get the whole story. It's all in (I believe) 6 issues. So, just get whatever trade you can find and presto!

Well it looks like Infinity Gauntlet is a good read so I need to pick it up. What are some other good series I should read? I haven't read anything Marvel (or DC) in years.

I may pick up Civil War just to see what it is about...

On the DC side, just pick up New 52 Flash, Animal Man, and Aquaman.

Those are the three best Superhero comics on the DC side right now.

I have no clue what's good on Marvel right now, but I hear Uncanny X-Factor is dope.

This thread has a lot of great recommendations.

If you want stuff with the Avengers from the movie, look at:

Iron Man Extremis
Captain America vol 5
Thor the Mighty Avenger
Walt Simonson's run on Thor (#260-271, 337-355, 357-382)
Planet Hulk
World War Hulk
I don't know any Black Widow or Hawkeye books, unfortunately.

For DC, I'd recommend the new 52 Batman, Wonder Woman, Swamp Thing, Aquaman, and Animal Man.

Lol at excluding the Ultimates.

Not going to lie, I've purchased more comics (Marvel mostly) than I ever have in my life in the past few weeks and Avengers was definitely the catalyst.
And you kinda sorta don't like it!

Anybody who knows the industry a bit better than me, are there any sites that track sales of comics like movies? Maybe broken down by print/digital?

Lol at excluding the Ultimates.
None of his suggestions really involve the Avengers per se, just the individual members. I don't think it was an intentional exclusion...

Yes, it's a six-issue series; not one of those huge jumbled up crossover event things.
Cool, I will have to check that out. It looks like amazon has it for pretty cheap.

In general I'm interested in reading the best that Cosmic Marvel has to offer since it looks like the films are going to be going in that direction.

I have been interested in checking out Dan Abnett's and Andy Lanning's work on Guardians of the Galaxy. Is anyone a fan?

I finally was able to watch the Avengers on Saturday, and then I went and saw it again on Sunday. Mark Ruffalo definitely stole the show.

If they do end up making a new Hulk film (which I'm praying they do), I hope it will draw heavily upon Ultimate Hulk vs. Wolverine (sans Wolverine of course).

Curses! >_<

But yes. The Ultimates is cool too.
Given ReiGun's avatar, I assumed that he is one of the -many- Cap fans that despised the Ulitmates version of the character. In that context, I found the exclusion funny since The Avengers film is so heavily based off the Mark Millar Ultimates books.

Yet, Cap in the movies was more like regular Cap and not the asshole Ultimates version. The movies have been a nice blend of both universes, taking cues from each to make its own thing.

Ultimate Cap makes a lot of sense considering he actually acts somewhat soldierly and was thrown onto a team that kills when necessary. He's actually old fashioned in values and generally acts leased on those values.

I think if given more time to actually explore the world he was reborn into, he would've mellowed out somewhat.

Got to see this yesterday with my wife and 3 year old son. We all loved it! The Hulk has always been one of my favorite comics due in large part to the fantastic writing of Peter David on it back in the 90's.

I'd been pretty disappointed with the previous movies, but they nailed it so well in this one. Before the movie started, my son would definitely say Iron Man or Captain America were his favorite of the Avengers, even half-way through he was scared of the Hulk. By the end of the movie though I asked him again and instantly said the Hulk is his new favorite.

Great action throughout balanced with some truly funny moments. Day 1 pickup on the blu-ray for me!

Of course he was! He was a fucking monster on the Helicarrier.

(Full disclosure, I didn't take my 5 year old son.)

I don't disagree with this.

For Avengers 2 or probably 3 would be more realistic, they should buy the rights back for Spidey and Wolverine and do a New Avengers movie. That probably sounds like blasphemy to Avengers purists but I started reading comics right when New Avengers came out and that was the first book I actively followed month to month, so it's got a near and dear place to my heart.

I must say, I think 3 years old is a little too young for this flick! Not in that there's anything so outrageously graphic about it, but just that it's not really intended for kids that young. I think 6-12 year olds will go absolutely nuts for it. Mad props to your kid though BigBlue, sounds like he was pretty well-behaved during the show and he has good taste!

Spidey has been an Avenger for a very long time. Well, as a reserve member at least. Think it was the early 90s or late 80s when he joined.

a few 3-4 year olds were in my audience and they rarely cared for it and talked a lot. annoying. I guess if you wanna bug people in your showing, bring them along.

I actually haven't even read The Ultimates entirely yet (on issue 4 on MDCU. I like it well enough so far). Hence, why I forgot it. lol

I liked the scenes I saw of Cap beating up Hank Pym for hitting Wasp, though.

Same... one was kicking my chair and making Hulk noises from about 45 minutes in until the end. :-[

I had no problems with Civil War, I really enjoyed it.

Does Tony act out of character? Yeah, the story plays to his most manipulative side but I never thought "This is not Tony" I just thought "wow Tony is being a dick and I see why"

I loved Civil War, though I can understand why its tone is polarizing. Also, it is very thoroughly a cross-over event, so the specific Civil War miniseries doesn't exactly stand perfectly on its own.

I don't know if it is better or worse that they didn't cop out on Civil War by making Tony a Skrull.

Because it would've been a totall bullshit cop out, but at least it would've made Tony not actually that much of a horrible ass.

Everyone was out of character. Reed and tony specifically. Both men are well known for doing their own thing are all of a sudden government men? And the whole ragnarok thing along with scanning petes abilities and tricking him into putting his family in the middle, as well as using the thunderbolts as a hit squad? tony went nuts when the basics of his armor was used without his permission, and he does the same to someone he considered his friend? He did a lot of fucked up things that he can't answer for.

Civil War sucks major ass, Iron Man characterization or no.

It has a great premise and devolved quickly to a series of fight scenes, and then no real good reason for it to end how/when it did.

No specifics for sake of spoilers.

All this talk of Civil War just reminded me that Penance is a fucked up idea for a superhero.

406px-Penance%28Baldwin%29_Head2.jpg

After the events of Stamford, Baldwin believed his powers to be burned out. However, they still exist, but now only manifest when he feels pain. While his powers are still kinetically based, they no longer appear to manifest as a "bubble field"; rather, his powers seem far more explosive in nature. In order to stimulate his powers, his Penance suit constantly rakes his flesh. Baldwin tolerates this to a masochistic degree, once stating that he would "wear [the suit] all the time if I could." By wearing the suit he has developed a natural tolerance to pain.

That was actually one of the few turns of events I enjoyed, despite the "zomg emo" aspect. Speedball was never a character I gave a shit about.

Because he considered the situation to be worth it, you can consider it him trying to "grow up"

Going out of character can be considered bad writing, but its also something people do all the time. He got a big stick up his ass and we actually got some pretty cool stories and developments out of it. What makes a villain a villain is that they "enjoy" doing fucked up things, Tony didnt seem to enjoy any of it, he just thought it was the only way.

We went to a matinee and there seemed to be a pretty large amount of kids in our crowd. He was pretty quiet throughout except for a few loud outbursts of things like "It's Captain America" when he first showed up in costume.

I didn't feel one way or the other about him. Shit is just fucked up.
Well there was a decent justification for his guilt in the plot. He was the only one to survive the initial catastrophe, protected by his powers. The New Warriors were taking on a group a bit out of their league and Baldwin was really playing it up for the cameras. All his teammates were killed along with the civilians.

...well I guess I'm not reading the rest of Civil War then. I scratched my head at some of the shit Stark did but I didn't know it went to that degree.

Yeah. I got all that. It's just the "constantly cutting himself to use his powers" thing. It bummed me out.

When he did it in Avengers Academy, I was all, "No, Robert... :("

Yeah it is a terrible read if you are hoping for ol' Shellhead to be a hero.

But awesome if you want some AMERICA!

You don't have to enjoy doing messed up things to be villain, its your acts that make you one. He may not have enjoying his acts, but he was behind all of them, and should have taken responsibility for them instead of giving him an out like memory loss.
